Hi NamePros,

We’re announcing the launch of the .crypto domain extension on 12/11. 50,000 domains have already been registered. Go to https://unstoppabledomains.com/?ref=namepros to find available domains.

You’ve probably all heard about cryptocurrency, but may not be aware that new domain extensions are being launched on blockchains. These domains are not part of the ICANN system. They are stored by the owner, with their private key, not by a registrar like Godaddy. No one can transfer a domain or update it other than the owner. If you store website content on decentralized storage instead of Amazon Web Services, then no one can take down your website other than you.

A blockchain domain + Decentralized storage = An uncensorable website

This is the beginning of an entirely new internet built to protect free speech around the world.

Blockchain domain features
  • No Renewals - Pay once and it’s yours ... forever

  • No Custodian - Domains are stored by the owner. No third party can move or update them

  • Payments - The domain can be used as a payment address for cryptocurrencies. Send Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, or any other currency all to the same domain

  • Uncensorable Websites - Attach domains to content on decentralized storage and create an uncensorable website

  • Transfers - Escrow agents aren’t needed. Transfer to anyone in the world in under 1 minute with no risk of being defrauded

We’ll be moderating this thread and we’d love to hear your thoughts!

I wouldn't be afraid of a decentralized future. People powered systems are far safer and better regulated than top down ones like exist today.
If that was the case we wouldn’t need laws because whatever people want to do is fine. It would also mean no wipo/udrp process because how people choose to use certain domains is their right.

Holy shit Batman, what are you saying?!

Here is a graphic, .zil and .crypto have the same attributes other than .zil is on the the Zilliqa blockchain and .crypto is on the Ethereum blockchain.

Going decentralized does not mean going lawless.

Need alternative DNS to work as a website - check.

Brad
DNS is very centralized. ICANN is the definition of centralization.

The decentralized web is actually how Tim Berners Lee, founder of the www, envisioned an internet to be. He is currently an advocate for the decentralized web.

It does because according to what @Unstoppable Domains just said, there is no recourse once a .crypto is registered.

Once the domain is on chain nobody can take it from you. That does not mean the police or a TM attorney can't come knocking, if illegal activity is demonstrated. There are still laws applied, nothing changes in that regard.

Ah now we got the truth. So, these are no different than .com except they have less functionality.

Who can take your .com once it’s in your account? That only happens in cases of bad faith. Sometimes domains get stolen but more times crypto currency gets stolen.

Zero reason for .crypto.

I understand that's your opinion. All good. There is still lots to learn about the decentralized web. Some things are worked out and some are not. It's that new. These are the early days. Although, with what is already available and with what is planned, the decentralized web has a bright future. Excitement is building and skeptics are onboarding, don't be the last.

Can you explain the advantages? We’ve just learned that security is less than that of traditional domains. We’ve also learned that there is less functionality.

Maybe I’m missing something?

You mention functionality. Its important to know the decentralized web is in its infancy. Some tools are available, such as a blockchain domain with full custody (.crypto), and some tools are in development. It's very early.

Beyond having complete custody of a domain, the decentralized web is more resistant to malware and DDOS attacks. In addition, files are distributed among many computers so back up is autonomous and safer. The decentralized web also uses much less bandwidth, estimated to be about half.

On the social aspect, decentralization helps many people throughout the world where censorship from authoritarian governments is a human rights issue.

I won't disagree that there are kinks to workout with this new decentralized web technology, but I have confidence it will continue to improve and gain trust in users.

Anyone get their free .crypto with last weeks AMA?

Landed MadRabbit, what the hey, hey? :) Succesfully imported an eth to MetaMask, and claimed.

Good stuff. Keep up the good work, UD.

Keep in mind, ye skeptics, .crypto may not reslove domains *yet, but .everything else can't send payments, now can they? If looking for comparisons, or tit-for-tat. All is positive with .crypto, it's in its infancy and keep an eye on the horizon.

I noticed it in the last moments and I got one. I'll PM it to you.

As with any new extension, there will be greater keyword availability than .Com. However, I would not anticipate a booming aftermarket for a wallet address shortener. Yes decentralized websites will be able to launched on them too, but how much will a developer pay for an aftermarket domain for a website which requires special extensions to view it?

In terms of selling these domains. Is there a 60 day lock .

And will markets allow them to be posted

No lock. You control it, not the registrar.

No, the current domain markets such as afternic, Sedo, GoDaddy, etc, won't recognize them as domains. (IMO)

Thanks. Dan doesn't recognise them either.

There was a time 15-20 years ago whe n I wrote checks for credit card and utility bills, used cash at the grocery store and did not utilize online banking. Oh I did not own any domain names either. I now receive email notification for utility payments which I make online and I write very few checks these days. I regularly view activity in my bank and credit card account s via an app or my tablet.

Regardless of what happens with Crypto prices long-term, I believe one should learn something about the technology. Open an account and buy $25 of BTC. Try transferring it to a different wallet. That knowledge could come in handy some. day.

I'll post this, but mods, feel free to remove it if its not allowed.

Looks like UnstoppableDomains is holding another AMA tomorrow and giving away a .crypto domain to all attendees. Just FYI. The last one that they had was a a specific domain, such as 2 words at random (description & animal), but you got to go through the random domain generator until you found one you like. I suspect it'll be the same here. During this event (well, anytime), you can ask them any question you have regarding domains & blockchain.

An update:
They are beginning to push out simple website builders. I just logged into my account, clicked on a domain and saw the new option.

See the screenshots below:

Note that I was able to transfer small amounts of DAI and XLM acquired through Coinbase's Crypto EARN program to a Crypto.com wallet using copy and paste functions in the apps without the need of any blockchain domain. My thought was to add the amounts to my Crypto.com card without incurring the sales commissions I would otherwise incur at Coinbase - wiping out a large percentage of the balance. However, Crypto.com seems to have $25 minimums for conversions...

It is confirmed in chat that Brave and others are working on the .crypto extension. Soon the non-technical internet users will not know the difference between a DNS domain and a Blockchain Domain. The protocols will work in the background.
