I'm sure this has happened before to some on here and I am no stranger to this either.

IT IS A TOTAL NIGHTMARE!

Nothing sucks more than losing a domain you did not want to lose and because of stupid things like the wrong auth codes from your registrar.

They give you a download of all your domains including matching auth codes. most work. but every now and then auth codes are not correct.

it always happens when the situation is time sensitive and you need to get things done quick.

For whatever reason, a domain you did not plan to let go gets lost and now it's with some other domainer.

You lose the domain because.

1. you did not set auto renew.
2. you left auto-renew off because you always plan to transfer.
3. you tried to transfer but for some reason wrong auth codes. you did not follow up with transfer because you assumed auth codes were good. domain goes into redemption. You can't afford to pay redemption fee. You take the risk and let it delete. or you think you are slick and pay for cheap dropcatch service but the service fails and gets beat by a faster dropcatch service.
4. registrar you order a domain transfer took to long to transfer and domain goes into redemption or simply did not submit the proper whatever to start the process.
5. Domain went to auction and you "planned" on bidding but forgot. You waited because you did want to run up the bid but then you weren't paying attention and missed it.

I'd like to hear your experiences bad or good.

You can even mention when you "almost" lost a domain because of any of the above but luckily got your domain in your account "safely".

Please excluded anything that has to do with paying a redemption fee.

These are just a few I remember. I'll add more later.

So what domains have you lost in the past that really pissed you off?

Please note.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I had a mc texture download website on them (Very bad one as I was young) but it was getting very high traffic. Most of them have been ad pages ever since I couldn't afford their renewal :/

Auto renew is your friend, especially if you get ill.

I keep all my domains on auto renew and a couple of months before they are due I review and shut off the ones I don't want to renew.

Heaven forbid you get really sick or something, auto renew would be a god sent.

AGREED True story. back in Christmas holidays 2017 I was in hospital for Diabetic Ketoacidosis. It's when your suger is so high. mine was 1000 :xf.eek::xf.eek::xf.eek::xf.laugh::ROFL::nailbiting::nailbiting:

nurse said testing machine only went to up to 1000. I maxed it! I never beat a machine at anything! lol

I showed THAT machine! lol

I was in hospital for 2 weeks while I had GD domains close to redemption. I was transferring them all LCN.if GD rep Edgar Lopez did not help me. I would have been screwed.

moral. autorenew is your friend.

but if you need to save money. REP is your savior. but you need to find a GOOD ONE.

Never lost anything...yet. Funny timing though as I just got my first renewal reminder email. A name I purchased here and got as a push it expiring in 60 days...I tend to think that turning on auto renew by default would probably be a good idea and when I review my names if I decide I want to drop one just turn off auto renew for it individually.

It is annoying but not putting autorenew and even doing transfers as I mentioned in another thread really is a good "Wakeup call" to give you a heads up "get up off your ass" and start weeding thru all your "great ideas" and see if they really are "great ideas" or just garbage.

I can't even count how many times I got lazy and set auto renew and renewed garbage just because of pure laziness. True story.

Probably the most sick to the stomach and embarrassing thread I could participate in so I won't but wanted to say I wouldn't be only one to have lost names to not paying attention. Reminders are becoming required as everything requires more clicks etc to get to get to a point where you can see expiring in order now easier than ever to over look expiring domains.

Anyone else?
I usually do not lose names because my organization is working well. But sometimes I regret to let a name drop, my multi-stage system for renewal is symply not good enough. And it cannot forecast.

Well, the name I lost because of a wrong let-go decision was sold today on Sedo for my 2F closeout price. I made the decision to not renew it in December, 2019. At the time the reason why I handregged it a few years ago seemed to be a single incident in the past. Now this name is in the world news for one week. I reflected to check if I wanted to drop it or not several times when watching news. Sitting on my PC I was distracted by other tasks, forgot the name. It is
Corona-Virus .de

Wow! And I guess the hypen works in Germany too? Yikes? How much it sold?

Does it make you sick a bit in your stomach?

I own Coronavirus.eu and .es

And seems to be a run on "coronavirus" domains in all extensions

Non hyphenated verson is better IMO. But a hyphen in .de is ok here.
Mine sold for 79 Euro BIN.

Does it make you sick a bit in your stomach?
Yes just because the main mistake was not to keep this generic name in a cheap TLD.
I hold worse domains for longer.

Congrats to the lucky and diligent buyer.

Funny, or stupid: I researched about sense making combinations in .com during the last days but forgot my original.
My domain therapist would say Portfolio growth and play instinct lead to loss of control at some point.
The smart domainer has a portfolio of 200 excellent names and did just chase coronavirus in com and org after the first news hit. We know that but obviously there are personal restrictions in behaviour.

Well, if this virus disappears soon all related domains are not worthless but there is no market. If this virus becomes pandemic all these names will drop because registrants suffer pneumonia in hospital or worse. ;)

I've never lost one. Have nearly 700 names and NONE on auto-renew. I have a master spreadsheet for my portfolio which I review regularly. Keeping good records (having a spreadsheet which I know is correct) is the key. It takes work, but it's worthwhile. The reason I have none on auto-renew is to force myself to review every name (at least a couple of months before expiry). From that I decide what will be dropped/liquidated and what I will renew (the vast majority being renewed). If I'm transferring to my main registrar I do it ahead of time. 2 weeks in hospital would not affect this strategy at all. 2 months might be a different story.

Maybe you should have taken the advice of your domains and tried crossfit and a men's health diet.

Actually CrossFit was kinda to blame for injury and subsequent infection! It was very serious and I need another 2 surgeries to resolve.

@WhoaDomain.com

There were other domains that expire on the same day but they were available to transfer. For some reason Godaddy took that domain out of my account in 24 days and I could not transfer it. Usually it used to be up to 41 or 42 days you could do the transfer, but now you can still transfer the domains within 30 days of expiry. This specific domain was taken out after 24 days. I called and talked to a few different agents at GD but no one really helped me. After 24 days the domain whois showed buydomains as the owner instead of me.

weird.... cause its supposed to be an official rule followed in all cases to let you renew/transfer out up to day -30... or further if there are no bids.. but a -30 day guarantee.

@Joe Styler

It is weird, because when I called the agents, one of them told me himself that the domain should not have been taken out of my account. He said he is trying to put the domain back in my account, but he was unable to. He then suggested to send an email to [email protected] and I did, but never heard back from them. Few days passed in calling and trying to get this resolved and by then the domain was already resolving to buydomains sales page.

umm when did you lose this domain? wasn't there a recent change over at Godaddy as far as being able to transfer out? I think the magic number now is 18 days.

19th day is redemption. pay $80

19th day. can't transfer out.

30 days is history.
42 days is history too

or so I'm told.

did not know ICANN rules can be changed by registrar. if you call ICANN about it they will say each registrar has their own set of rules.

in that case what's the point in having ICANN make rules when anyone can make their own? I don't get it.
