Hi there guys,

I was fortunate enough to buy couples of new gTLD domain names that directly have the name of unicorn startup which is valued at 1 billion dollars.

To put it in a simple way, it's like having a domain name like uber.app

I have already reached to the CEO of this startup, and we talked about these domain names, he told me that currently, it's not on their plan to make an acquisition but he will back to me when they need one of those domains.

Now the startup has raised another investment round and their goal for the new year is to acquire some of the good assets like other small startups.

so any ideas guys on how to deal with this situation, I know it's a waiting game, but I just need help to value these domain names when the time is right to sell them.

Also is it a good idea to sell them to another domainer? or should I keep em for myself?

Any thoughts?

Firstly, stay away from company (trademarked) names. Did you register the names before the company started?

Well, I registered the names after the company started

Yeah, stay away from company names, it can only lead to legal trouble for you. Its best to spend a few months learning the basics and domain value before buying names. Focus on .com names as well, most companies have never even heard of the new gtlds.

Good luck

I am aware of the legal aspect of it, and the owner seems it cool with it

If the extension is .app consider informing your prospect on the most exclusive attribute of the extension.

"Your security is our priority. The .app top-level domain is included on the HSTS preload list, making HTTPS required on all connections to .app websites — no individual HSTS registration or configuration required. The result is built-in web security for you and your users"

I recently sold a .app and it was this one feature that "sold" them on it.

One owner who is cool with it, does not mean his executive or legal team will be.

I personally don't think the owner will sign anything off without seeking advice from someone in that company, you are playing with fire.....

This is one of the reasons why this industry gets a bad name, why people think they can register company names, trademarks etc and think it is OK is beyond me....

Do you what you want (your going to anyway), but it is unethical and not good business practice.......

The owner was probably cool with it because they know it will take a few thousand in legal fees and its theirs via UDRP versus whatever you are asking for it.

You obviously werent aware of the legal aspect if you registered a company name. Its better to just not do it and its frowned upon in this industry and gives all domainers the "cybersquatter" tag. It certainly wont do you reputation any good. Just take it as a lesson learnt. This guy might be ok and you get away with it but the next company might not be so forgiving.

Good luck

Thank you for the insightful response.

Well, I am new to the domain investment scene and when I registered those domain names I wasn't fully aware of the legal aspect to it, when I reached to the CEO he was nice and we talked a little bit about this and he told me that he will come back to me as soon as they need one of these domains. I am not going to ask high 100k or even 10k .. I will make sure to ask a price that is much lower than the few thousand of legal fees ... It will be the first and last time to do such a practice. Thank you

First of all, thank you so much for letting me know about the UDRP, I was literally clueless about it
Second, I will make sure to ask a price that is much lower than the few thousand of legal fees, I will make it easy, fast and very cheap.

Thank you so much for the great advice, Well, to be honest, I wasn't aware of all of this, I am a newbie and i was thinking i am doing the right thing here. but I discovered that I am "cybersquatter" ... It will be the first and last time to do such a thing...

Now what you suggest to do, I am thinking to ask ridiculously cheap figures to give the owner all of his domain names .. it costs me around 300$ and I am thinking to give up on em with the same exact price
