I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I have had a bunch of inquiries so far this month, but that is typical for January. I just sent out 30 emails on Friday following up on inquiries in various stages of negotiations.

I find that Decembers are better than average, probably as companies are using up remaining budget or to write off a purchase against a good year of profits, or to start planning for the new year.

I find that Januarys are possibly the best month of the year for inquiries. Again, I think it is because businesses are starting off the new year with new plans.

I always thought December would be the busiest for the reasons you mentioned but January is definitely proving to be more “eventful” this year.

About halfway done - I bought too many TBR leftovers on those 99-cent sales.

I know what you mean if you're talking about WHC and their set up. Plus u forward a lot of your domains, which is a bit more work if I’m not mistaken.

Just off the top of my head, I'd have said December was always good, up until when offices started closing for the holidays. January always felt above average, and July & August always felt the worst. That got me thinking, was my gut feeling correct? So I just checked my inquiries database and ran the numbers for the past 7 years. These are the percentage of total inquiries, broken down by month.

Jan 10.0%
Feb 8.5%
Mar 9.3%
Apr 8.6%
May 9.0%
Jun 7.0%
Jul 6.3%
Aug 6.4%
Sep 8.2%
Oct 9.8%
Nov 9.8%
Dec 7.1%

So January was tops, but not by as much as I'd have guessed. But Jun/Jul/Aug was definitely noticeably worse.

That and both NamesPro and BareMetal make this literally a FT job.

Another data point, for what it's worth

I went a few months towards the end of 2019 with no inquiries then soled 2 domains last week for small profits.

A 6 month old .CA hand-reg for about 10x and a .ORG I caught last summer for about 3x

My best week in a loooong time. Both came after I repriced my names in early January, so hopefully there will be more

Just curious what you guys might do with this negotiation.

"Hello, I'd like to discuss the terms of obtaining this particular domain name xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.ca Please contact me directly at xxx-xxxx."

I don't feel like coming when I'm called. I sent an email response instead. I listed comparable sales on the lander so they know what I'm looking for and the name is also listed at Sedo with a bin.

Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

I think what you're doing is pretty safe but I would probably call the guy eventually, especially if you think it can sell for a good price and haven't received many/any offers for the domain in the past. I understand how you might want to avoid phone calls, but it might be your best chance to build trust with the buyer and close the sale. It could also be an opportunity to learn more about the buyer and/or make a pitch about why your name is great and worth at least xxxx dollars.

I tried out-bounding a little last year and always included my phone number. People often responded to my emails but i feel like my chances would have been much better had i got them on the phone.

That's my two cents.

I appreciate your response. Phone calls are difficult for me because my day job takes me into areas that don't have cell phone service or reception. Nothing worse than losing a sale because of a dropped call.

More than anything I'm a little offput by this guys demand/request to call HIM. It feels "here boy" to me. Maybe I'm too sensitive.

I'd call them too if that's what they are asking (assuming your research shows they are legit). Just think of when you're a customer...if you asked for a call/meeting and they simply sent an email, would you be ok with that?

Then turn it around - call him up, be confident and lay down the lumber.

I think I'll do that, but I'll make him wait a day.

As with anything else, research everything first. Research the buyer as best you can. What's his attitude and what is an appropriate response? Remember, you're trying to make a sale, not teach him a lesson in manners. Consider the domain, who would want it right now? Have there been any recent trademarks filed, etc... Only after you know everything you can, then decide how to respond. Each situation and response may be different. Just be professional and firm in your response and include your price (and I always state +GST/HST if applicable.)

Once you have your research done, then maybe its best to call him back right away (or as soon as possible) and try to hammer out a deal. Sometimes people get excited by an idea but if you ice them a day or longer, they may have already moved on to another idea by the time you get back to them. Or maybe they've thought more rationally about spending more money than they should on a domain name. I figure calling back quickly and sealing an impulse deal is probably a good strategy on domains in the $xxxx or under range.

On the other hand, 5 and 6 figure deals don't typically happen on impulse, those negotiations can take months or even years. So for those type of domains where I want that kind of money, I will try and reply back relatively quick on the first inquiry, but after that, just hunker down and realize its going to be a slow process.

And when it comes to phone calls, just be honest. Tell them you're typically out of cell area traveling during the day and it's difficult to make a scheduled call during the day. So ask if you can catch them early morning, later in the evening, or just by email. Sometimes being in different time zones makes that easier. I've actually made some of my biggest deals while traveling, in the past couple years I've closed really big sales while in Marrakesh, Cancun and Kona.

For some reason though, I generally try to avoid phone calls too. Maybe because I don't want to make any impulsive decisions - which is much easier to do on the phone. In fact, maybe the buyer is hoping for that. But also because email allows me to have a timestamped record of everything said. That being said, I have made good deals over the phone too. And I can imagine that most people have a skeptical perspective of domainers in the first place. Talking on the phone allows you to connect and I imagine it builds trust, which may be exactly what the buyer is trying to achieve, making sure you're not some dude in Nigeria or whatever.

I have called back several times when requested. I agree with many of Rob’s points and I have found that most times it does come down to wanting to actually talk to someone. And by the time you have talked to them they will know you are a professional. I don’t know how many times they have asked for web advice etc. outside of the scope of just buying a domain after talking for 10-15 minutes.
Nobody is going to take advantage of you...you’ve been doing this for too long. Take that confidence into the call and see if there is a deal to be done ...or not.

***do let them know via email reply that you are sometimes out of cell range but I wouldn’t worry that they are trying to get the upper hand by asking you to call....they can’t

I have lost a few sales because of not calling the person directly and working a deal out ASAP, people loose interest or change there focus to other projects. I have made 2, 3k sales in the last few months, but could have had at least one more if i would have acted a little more quickly, but I'm becoming more flexable on my prices during negotiations since i pay between $10-$20 for most of my names so taking 1k, 2k, 3k is a great return.

The worst is answering a phone call to find out its a domain inquiry and this is their first contact. They say "I'm interested in a domain you own" and I just have to say, "I'm in a meeting so I can't really talk right now, can you fill out the contact form on the website so that I can get back to you? Please be sure to mention the domain name."

There's nothing worse than being put on the spot to talk about a domain name I don't always even remember that I own!

I closed off a deal last year via a phone call. Sometimes it just takes the potential buyer actually hearing a real voice as opposed to just emails. If they want to call then definitely arrange a call. I am not sure if it was mentioned but have a reasonably base price in mind already. You can still do a call on your time. You can still be in control.

Looking for honest opinions from .ca domains experts... What do you guys think of this domain? Do you see any value in it? Not really familiar with ccTLD domains yet!

Not less than 90,500 exact monthly searches for the word moba!

Statistics from 2014-2015
League of Legends and Dota 2 are two of the most played games in the world with respectively 27 millions (total of 67) and 2.4 millions (total of 43) daily users.

Imagine in 2020...

As an update I have now used the Dynadot code for getting a .ca domain to exactly match the same name in some other extension in your Dynadot account. I was not sure when I posted before, but have confirmed two things:
  • You can use it for multiple .ca domains (not sure if any limit but I successfully used it for 4)
  • You can this month register a new domain in some other TLD, and then in a later session same day register the matching .ca. That is what I did, found other extensions I liked that also had a .ca available, registered the other first, then logged in again added the .ca with identical names, then enter the coupon code CAMATCH99 at the shopping cart and price on each changed to $0.99. Note it is only until end of January.
So my domain fast (I went 49 days without a single new acquisition) is now over (mixed emotions :xf.smile::xf.wink::xf.frown:).

Anyway I thought I would share in case it is useful to someone else looking for a pair of a .ca and the same word in some other TLD.

By the way my top priority word I took was numerical(.)ca that I saw on this thread some months ago on the drop list via @DomainRecap, so thank you(y) (although sorry not taking directly from link)! I kept watching that no one took it while I had my domain fast. I also took numerical(.)network that I liked as the matching in some other TLD so I could get the .ca at the deal. And I like alliteration.

Numerical seemed like a good word for me :xf.cool:.

Not sure but I hope we continue to see canna-related domain sales this year. I have a pile of them.... I'm thinking the recent changes in Ontario's cannabis market might help.

Do you happen to own grams.ca? I see the .com is listed on afternic with a 500K minimum.

That's a great domain! The plural works well when it comes to cannabis industry, plus the singular seems to have been in use for a long time already (in an unrelated industry). Why not list it on Sedo and Afternic?
