I have been thinking and reviewing things and I realised that a lot of times, domaining looks like a portfolio game to me - of course, a decent one.

Even a hand registered portfolio of say, a 250 domain name portfolio with 3% sale at $6 a name would have an investment of $1500 and 8 domain sale of say $700 each amounting to $5,600
Accordingly, the numbers may adjust as we scale up. But when I look at appraisals section with individual domains, a single domain may not make sense a lot of times.

Like say, a single decent .CO domain may not have value individually but if you own 200 of them, price it in $1000 range and expect a 2% sale, that may make more sense.

A portfolio game looks like a decent game in domaining.
What is your thought on this?

Just as an fyi, i've just been to Houston once, but I just read this about your area codes that was real interesting from a Geo domain perspective; https://www.chron.com/news/houston-...-s-secret-area-code-class-warfare-9966440.php

What I found most interesting is how classes of Houstonians/Texans can be identified by their area codes. Could you make a few bucks armed with this knowledge? Maybe:xf.wink:

Haha ) I like 713, myself. Made sure to get a great number too. 713-3xx-xxx3, with all Xs being the same number )

As for a name, I own the best possible name for Houstonians. It is ... houstonians/com )))

I think I recall seeing that, and I've visited Elix.com, RightBrand.com and Recons.com....all great works btw. I just wish I had your technical talent, but I'll keep looking.

Thanks for sharing(y)

I have MA in Int Relations/Int Law, and MBA in Finance/Marketing, so not much of a tech background ) Had to learn few things just to be able to write detailed specs to developers, fix minor things myself, not rely on the developers on what is better etc., but do my own research.

I'd say find a great partner that knows his way around web development, but I know that is hard in itself. You'll have to do lots of studying yourself even to know what you are looking for. It involves lots of trial and error.

What I have settled for is a) my own dedicated servers; b) my own server admin that I pay per server basis per month fixed; c) learning basics of wordpress, seo; d) finding a good wordpress developer that can take care of more complex aspects as needed paid per task/hour.

Another think...i've carved out a "niche" with area codes since my region recently rebranded form "Hampton Roads" to "757". Just as an fiy....i know you have a lot on your plate, but I see "ReBranding" as a big deal for anyone interested. I've been involved in a couple of successful rebranding initiatives where there's another opportunity to profit:xf.smile:

"I'd say find a great partner that knows his way around web development, but I know that is hard in itself."....that's easier said than done. I sort of have one in mind, and he's shown interest, but unfortunately he's very very busy. I've also made another excellent NP connection in Texas, but he's more of a name guy like me. I hope we're not getting too far off topic, but I think some of this applies to the question, "Is Domaining a Portfolio Game?" Thanks again!

"Offense" is my middle name Joe....thanks for recognizing MyOffense.com as one of the many motivators I use to juice me up(y) Have you ever been to a trade show with thousands of lawyers who help people not unlike yourself start businesses? If you have and you didn't have anything to sell them, shame on you:xf.rolleyes:
I haven't! Full time work and two young kids keep me a little too busy to take my domain show on the road, so I do my selling from the comfort of home. That's why I was curious to hear how your tradeshow experience went, back when you were planning on attending some. Any renewed plans to try that again?

Seriously Joe...i was planning on doing a joint trade show with Donuts for my .golf domains, but Donuts backed out:xf.frown: Then I was looking/hoping to do some sort of a joint trade show with DominionDomains.com aka Dominion.Domains for .homes for the real estate and building industry, but it turns out they're total FOOLS!...and that's not just by my account:xf.rolleyes: Stay tuned Joe....Rome wasn't built in a day:xf.wink:

It might be fun. and possibly insightful, to shorten the topic of this thread by one word to
Is Domaining a Game? :xf.wink:
(although possibly also off topic :xf.eek:)

as someone who knows that people know the size of my domain inventory judging by their snarky comments directed towards me sometimes on here.

I think I am uniquely qualified to answer the question of this thread by OP

Answer? NO(n):whistle::nailbiting::banghead:(y):xf.grin:

I agree that the numbers game can be a worthwhile strategy.

One of my portfolios is just that... Random mid level domains.. with one or two decent ones and a sprinkling of low end ones as well.

It's around 150 domains and has consistent sales. Last year, just off the top of my head I can recall the following sales amounts from this portfolio:

$2,100
$1,400
$1,100
And a whole lot of $100 sales to resellers.

What's funny is that I'd sell the entire portfolio for $5,500 as I'm starting a tee-shirt business and need the capital.

Not sure where the best place is to sell a full portfolio though?

Anyhow.. I'm getting side tracked...

What I wanted to say it's that yes... Having 100+ decent names is a good strategy.

I got all those sales without even listing most of the domains on marketplaces or even putting up landing pages on them... So imagine how many more would have sold if I'd given it proper attention.

:)

What is funny actually is that you potentially found a scalable business, where you have invested $2-3k into 150 names that generate you around $4K after renewals, and yet instead of scaling up, rinsing and repeating, you are thinking of liquidating and starting a business in a highly competitive niche.

Good thing about a portfolio is it gives your buyer perspective on pricing so they feel a bit more comfortable and willing to consider spending more

Domaining is not like a number game. It all depends on your focus. If you do your own research to pick only quality domains in high demand probability, then it won't matter if your portfolio is small or large. But the verdict is that most successful domainers have large portfolio.
