question Selling a name on afternic while under transfer lock?

What happens if you sell a domain through afternic while still early in the 60-day transfer lock?

Does the domain sit in account/funds sit idle until the domain can be transferred? Would you have to wait all that time before payout or do they have another procedure?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
When I contact to Afternic customer support team with the similar question their reply is "There is nothing preventing a domain from begin listed for sale during a 60-day lock. Should a domain sell during that period the buyer would either need to take possession at the current registrar or elected to wait for the lock to be released. If they choose the latter payment will be held until the domain is delivered."

Can anyone outline experience when they sold a name in transfer-lock?

I can't find it again, but I am pretty sure I remember seeing a post from someone in some thread about the situation, and in that case the buyer did not wish it at the registrar where it was, so the sale did eventually happen but not until after the 60 day lock expired.

Hopefully someone with direct, recent experience can definitively respond, however.

If the domain name is .com or .net and is under 60 days lock after a recent registrar transfer - then politely asking the registrar to unlock it may help. Registrar would be able to unlock it and allow transfer, even though in this particular case it would have no obligation to.

If the domain was recently registered - then it must remain with the current registrar for 60 days. As it is set on registry level.

yes I had a similar experience at sedo. I asked if they wanted to push to same registrar but buyer said they would wait, so as soon as the 60 day lock was over the domain was transferred and I got my money. (which was just a week longer) Don't know at afternic but it seems to be that they would do the same thing. Seems like a basic practice thing. cheers. :)

That's good to hear(y)
Just a quick question if you were specifically noting it was under lock period. Not sure if this is an established practice already? Cheers!

I just know I had a week to wait, where as if it had been 2 months to wait might've been different. maybe. :)

What if the domain name is locked but registered at godaddy? Does the sale get through immediately? It's weird that domains bought at godaddy auctions (that were already registered at godaddy) have the 60-day lock which prevents them from being listed as "fast-transfer" on afternic...
