The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I was tricked once by a buyer who got a discount by claiming that he was purchasing the dot com domain to donate to his church, then later I saw a fully for profit site on the URL, although it was technically associated with the Church it turned out not to be nonprofit. I wrote to the Church itself complaining, and the research I did showed that this particular buyer had already been investigated in my city for channelling supposed non profit funds into his own pocket. When I found out all this I was going to sue the guy to get the domain back, mostly on principle because I didn't like the fact that a person would use religion falsely to get a discount, but in the end, he got away with it because too little money was at stake and I never did anything about it other than smear his name in the mud a little with his church.

Yes, for sure.

One of our clients has many .com domains that map to popular church names, e.g. cornerstone, grace, hope, faith are all anchor words for churches.

More niche you get into words like pentecostal, apostolic, etc.

I have seen 5 figure offers for church names where there multiple logical buyers. One "love offering" pays for it, and as more and more churches serve international online audiences, they need to go digital.

LakewoodChurch.com is used by Joel Osteen. He can afford Lakewood.com, for example. The current owner of that domain looks like not much.

Key thing with churches:

- They are lower tech
- They move slowly

So, my advice if you are going to get church names, is make sure that you get names where there are many logical owners, don't pay too much, wait patiently, and be prepared to do a lease with a purchase option.

Why would they now they have access to cheap domain names ending in ".church" ?

I have seen Church sites on, even in our medium city, all of .ca, .org, .com and .church. I think .life has also seen use in the Church market, and probably others.

So I would answer yes. But perhaps the question is one of economics, is the likely price to make it worthwhile as a domain investment? However, @Rob Monster informative answer indicates, my thinking is limited, and indeed, at least occasionally, 5-figure offers happen.

Do many Churches in US use the .us?

I have seen more churches use .COM than .Church or even .BIBLE for which Epik is #1.

You would think .Church could have done better but the absence of cloud software and the absence of any kind of standards or network effects has made the .CHURCH not better but longer and more expensive.

We did pitch Donuts a while back on building .CHURCH into a proper platform but that has yet to happen. I look forward to the day that .Church is a Forever TLD with a platform connected by Single Sign on.

No. A church will not pay big money for a dot com when they use a dot whatever. They have better use for the money than buy a dot com. I know since I even was giving them away and there were no takers.

I did discuss via OP. Turns out his domains is on Epik. I think it is worth a one year hold as there are many logical churches. It is related to Episcopal denomination.

Speaking of Church domains, I just noticed that Internet.Church is on the Daily Diamonds list today.

https://marketplace.epik.com/daily-diamonds

Both are interesting cases.

Churches may be "non-profit" but that does not mean they don't have resource. For sure they need a digital strategy to remain relevant in the digital age.

Digital-first churches do exist, e.g.:

https://www.life.church/

This is the question from OP:

He DID NOT ASK which name is listed on Epik.
Make a New Year Resolution and follow the rules. Why it's so difficult for you to follow the rules?

Rob was kind enough to dm and ask so he could guide me there. I am grateful for that. I just happened to have the domain at epik. What rule is he not following?

For someone like me who is still to make a sale, his advice is so welcome.

Insert a link to promote your business is spamming.

We are talking about Church domains. When was the last time you saw that at NP? Pretty much never.

I really hope, they'll spend the donated money
for a different purpose than buying a domain name

I've been in church work for 40 years. Helping to brand church/christian terms to make them more memorable is how I got started in this domain world. As I counted, 92% of the largest and fastest growing churches in the US own their .church domains according to the info at Outreach.com. Just go through the list to see. Church plants love help in naming.

As someone who's been involved with the critical "Announcement time" on Sunday mornings, if you can say "For more information just go to pop.church," more people, I believe will remember, than if you say, "Remember to find us at PrinceofPaletineLuthrenchurch.org."

Ease of connection mean being found which leads to being reached with the message you're sharing.

Just my opinion though. (Names at Efty, Epik and Afternic).

I've been in contact with some churches regarding a name I currently hold, and can say that they are already operating on a .com and are very interested in upgrading.

But they're rather creative in terms of finalizing a deal.

Back when I used to own TheSpirit (.) com (sold to another investor), I had a large church network/broadcasting group email me about its availability. So yes, I believe they can be interested in a .com. Especially the big christian keywords i.e Holy Spirit, Spirit,Resurrection, Reborn etc.

I have seen churches change their names to drop the denomination to attract people who may not have that denominational background. Then they may change the name entirely. Another large church uses Go+ the name as the church's name is used by another smaller church in another state. But some may view spending resources on a domain name as wasteful.

Many churches use .com.

I once registered a .church domain for a local church to use. They didn't use it though, and I ended up selling it to a different church that inquired and was willing to pay 4 figures for the domain. I had the buyer send the money straight to the church for which I had acquired the domain.
