Thanks for the link
Was just asking because WIPO has over 60,000 trademarks for i9 and many relate to computer companies, I own several generic domains that include Apple trademarks and GoDaddy wont list them
If you set up a site selling i9 laptops doesnt that infringe copyright?

I'm not a lawyer

I woudn't be worried
but I have no intention to create a website
I sell domains

ask a lawyer

Might sound strange but most of the .in domains registered in 2005 (the year of .in launch), were registered by German people. Some of them still hold them, the best single word keywords.

for Germany you want .de
.com is only a good choice
if the customer acts internationally
What if the name is registered (and developed) in .de, .at, ch? Does that make .com more attractive to Germans?

What’s the next best alternative then?

Say, keywordKeyword.de developed, keyword-keyword.de too.

What would German look at? Checking .com availability or adding prefixes/suffixes to .de?

Frank, I meant another company. I understand a German company that sits on .de doesn’t care about .com unless they have global customers.

Now, assuming a German company is looking for a domain and the keyword combo they want is registered in .de (including dashed version), what you think should be on the mind of this company?

Going for .com (if available on the aftermarket) or settle on an alternative name in .de (by adding prefix or suffix)?

We know a US-based company would first look for .com and if unavailable — .net/.org would be on the radar (not .us), and I wonder how German businesses think.

I bought a few German names in .com, so this is not only curiosity :xf.wink:

I guess thats greatly depending on the company and the kind of name they like to use

I have discovered this thread only now, so allow me to respond per post :)

so in your opinion. domains like: stockexchan.ge AND onlinecolle.ge are not worth registering.
While I believe in domain hacks in general, I'm not sure 2-word hacks are worth to register. I have sold College last week, btw :)

even the English ones like percenta(.)ge don't you think its more valuable and easier sale ?
It has some value, but all depends if you receive offers for it. If not, no reason to keep them. I have dropped lot of them in past years.

i have kaffee.ge and ready to sell at much lower price than that
No value in non-hack, full-word German words in .GE
Sorry :)

in Germany will associate .ge with Germany

and the reason is:
Germany in Germany is called Deutschland ( .de )
I think the point here is not about Germans using .GE - even though one German company tried to gamble on this 20 years ago.

The point is there are some German words ending with ge that could possibly be used as "creative" short domain names AKA hacks.

I have some single-word German hacks for my own, like frage or pflege, but for sure they are not trying to mislead someone to use .ge instead of .de - the purpose is completely different.

why would website like youtube(.)com care to get youtu(.)be ?
Would be interesting to see what fraction of their traffic comes from it, but YouTube do own and use (for redirection) YouTu.be. Also Taco Bell use Ta.co in a similar way. I guess for big businesses even if a small part of their business traffic comes that way, it is best to own and control it. Taco Bell do use the "hack" in advertising, not sure about YouTube and the .be. BTW a great thread I just stumbled upon which is helpful to learn a bit about the German market, as well as some of the points are transferable to other cc extensions in a general way. Thanks to all who have contributed.

Ta.co is a great example of a branded hack.

My understanding is that hacks are mostly used for clickable URLs and have almost no type-in traffic. Maybe for Ta.co or some other more-generic-keyword hacks there is some type-in traffic, coming from curious users.

As for YouTube, they are using youtu.be when you request a sharable link to the video. In general, Google is great with hacks - beginning with using Goo gl as a public URL shortener and now - having .GLE separate TLD, mainly to form GOO.GLE domain name :)

I lived in Germany for quite some time and would suggest that .de is literally the de facto go to extension for most websites there. Naturally, others are used such as .com .org .tv .net etc but .ge would NEVER be used.

I own deutschland.tv which is a great name - but deutschland.de would be the absolute best

Happy to hear that! If everyone would be on that opinion, .GE could be saved from 20 year long protectional lock for internationals, as one German company started to promote .GE as a .DE alternative :)

On the other hand, popular German websites on .de have typo traffic in .ge and it should be considered :)

.GE should never be considered as an alternative for German domains! The beautiful country of Georgia (not a U.S. state) owns .GE as their CCtld. I am somewhat familiar with this country. Trust me, it has nothing to do with Germany. No common borders. Very different language (uniquie, like this: გამარჯობა). Their name in English, being the same as U.S. state, alone causes a number of issues with everyday international communications etc... But, so far, nobody tried to associate them with Germany!

We are not talking about Georgia and Germany. Sorry :) Not about should it be associated or not.

TV is Tuvalu, ME is Montenegro, DJ is Djibouti, MD is Moldova - but somehow they have double meaning today. So, the question (not mine) was about GE possibly going to mean GErman. I am happy that there is close to zero chance for that, as we need GE for the country, but as I've mentioned earlier, 20 years ago some German companies had that in mind and were advertising it heavily.

Another point of discussion was about domain hacks ending with GE, like Challenge, that have nothing to do with the country of origin and are interesting only as a hacked keyword. In this case no relation with Georgia or Germany - just the question about German-language hacks like Pflege or Frage - do they have any potential or not.
