Could be
For example autonomous technology as a domain - atech.com or astech.com or autech.com?

AuTonoMous (ATM)
or
Take out all the vowels and just leave the consonants.

AuToNoMous (ATNM)

Or

AuToNoMouS (ATNMS.com taken from the looks of it since 2007!)

Autonomy is also a good one.

FYI "China" beat you to it with ATNMY.com

No consonants.

Is anyone registering domains specifically for the keyword " autonomous " ?

I've got a few but they are single industry specific...not much interest in them (yet).

The abbreviation thing is something I've wrestled with but there is nothing that seems to jump out at me...that's why I regged the full word in a two word combo.

I think it could be auto

This! No need to reinvent a bike.

Auto- "word-forming element meaning "self, one's own, by oneself, of oneself"" which effectively means autonomous

Do you think ai will be used as a blanket term for autonomous?

seems like auto makes the most sense as a shortener, or the full word like @Mister Funsky uses

Sometimes you have to fully say, or spell, what you mean. The shorteners are already taken with respect to other things (auto for example) so to my mind the full spelling is what is needed to convey the meaning. (given the chance, when it makes sense, I would reg the auto version as well)

If and when a breakout abbreviation happens, the registering floodgates will be open.
