discuss What would happen to our domaining business, if the awaited global economy crisis hits tomorrow?

I guess at least some domainers are asking themselves this question. Crisis coming? (about everybody says yes, many says 2020, but anyway...) And if it does, what would happen? How can we go through this best?

Perhaps the ones that are in the business for long know more (been through 2007 years), but newer ones don't. I know how it went for my business back then (tough) but don't know about domaining field.

So what would happen?

- Would the .COMs retain the same value? Or decrease - by how much?

- Will the percentage of sales decrease? How much?

- Will we have to trim down our portfolio and keep only important ones, for reasons of being able to financially sustain renewal costs?

- And a side question (crypto): Will the decline of bitcoin pricing, will it impact crypto domain sales a lot?

( I'm thinking there is a possibility that all the crypto trend might reverse soon. It's a side question but a niche that will definitely be impacted by a global crisis, question is how/how much. I believe people will have to sell out some stock to cover living costs and therefore this can throw bitcoin price to the ground in such a case. Just speculating for now. )

Thanks!

Great question!!! I think just be good to yourself and others is the right answer!!!

It's coming, just don't know when or how severe. The typical cycle of economic up and down has been successfully circumvented and tempered for a while. When it does, everything will lose value (maybe with the exception of some precious metals),

Nobody knows when or how severe. I'm thinking though it will be rather sudden, steep, and with huge social impact. Basically turning gas over existing social fires everywhere.

1. 2020 will be kidda ok on the outside everything will be insider job [ QE4 Negative interest rate so free money for zombie companies ] So domaining should be ok as more cheap money will be flowing in the economy.

2. 2021 will be hell
3. First gold will be a bubble
4. Then gold will go below 1000-400 [ at least 1000 ]
5. Gold & USD will rise together
6. Compared to super USD all other currency will be severely punished.
7. By 2026 chaos will be every where
8. Possibility of WAR
9. USD will no longer be world reserve currency.
10. All these to introduce new global currency [ Might be a centralized crypto currency ]

I can go on and on...

Note: Its all subjective to IMF comes with something similar to 2008 as solution [ Not FED ], thats the last wild card that can be played. The financial system had almost collapsed 2 times before and they saved it by new policy. As per my personal opinion they can't save the system this time.

I believe it is worth making the general profile / segmentation of your typical clients, based on domains you have.

If you have high-value domains typically bought by corporations, there's nothing to worry about.

If you have mostly crypto domains, that's a wildcard. I'd be wary of those, but not everybody will have this reaction of course.

If your domains are largely targeting small businesses, startups, mid-income and/or individual buyers, I think it is the time to maybe switch to a different profile. As always, this is where it will hit mostly.

Well, you have given me some things to think about! I've never considered crypto 'saving' the day but it may be the solution 'offered' to us.

Gold at 400 again...memories (I sold all when it hit 1200 the first time!)

I wish You guys are 100% right. Cause we are living the best of best time in human history. Nobody wants to go to bartering world.

Same here. And we definitely don't want to spread negative rumors.

But that's not the scope of this thread.

After 20 years of business, I learned three things that kept me always afloat.

One, the same ol' classic that you need to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Two, that businesses need time to steer away from danger, and domaining is a business even if a personal one.

And three, that in general you need say 3 months to make small changes and at least 1 year to make significant changes, if not more. Because each business is like a large ship with a lot of inertia, can't pivot immediately, you need time to make it change direction.

Since many expect 2020 is going to be fine mostly but 2021 in turmoil, if you read the above, it's about time to ask yourself these questions and not await for the market shift to happen already.

Then you should also consider that during these bad times will you trust your money at the bank who is printing +-50BN every day which will eventually collapse the system? I am sure a bankrupt bank can't provide you paper money when they have shutdown. I guess not. Thats why you have a thought on Gold or other intrinsic valued assets to keep in you portfolio [ at least 25% of it ] You can at least keep it to your self. In terms of crypto you can't. Its just the ultimate tool of NWO to control everything without a % of chance for freedom. Just as side note Most of the crypto is owned by 1000 people to play monopoly with the new system. Things like its anonymous, zillions of times encrypted and .... will be their promotional hoax. But yes unfortunately people will fall for it as they did for the same system [ paper currency ] we are ditching at the moment.

A good gentlemen wakes early and starts the day with gusto.

Expect great things and do great things and you may be retired come Sunday versus still plugging along with your business 20 years later.

When you stop getting bogged down with the nuances and vagaries of daily life, you start to live.

Is it gonna rain tomorrow? Will I get hit by the truck cruising down the highway. Will Chipotle not give me enough saute veggies again? WHO KNOWS? WHO CARES?

Each day, set your path on an upward trajectory and follow it. Tomorrow the same. And the day after day.

Different people have different mindsets. I like yours, very positive. Though I'm a dual person, have two completely opposite sides, one that is sort of a prepper, and the other who focuses on living and follows this kind of advice. So I suppose it's like almost the two wolves inside, isn't it? :xf.smile:

Otherwise, while I definitely agree, just a bit of preparedness and not going blindfolded into something won't hurt anyone. With limits, of course.

Generally, would the value of domains drop, in a recession (world wide economic meltdown)

If tomorrow 2020 turns into a slow recession (world wide economic meltdown)

Will the value of domains for end users reduce or increase ?
(eg if they would pay $20,000 now, if we are in a recession, would they only want to pay $12,000 for the same domain?)

Will the value of domains for investors (resellers) reduce or increase?

No crisis, because Russia, China, Trump are working together to prevent it.

But I consider domainig as a risky business in the long run. I would't consider a 3 letter .com as a safe retirement investment, but it would be a great speculative investment.

Chinese people prefer .com at the moment, this doesn't mean they would remain to do so. What if they switch to .top. com'mers would then get screwed.

.biz registry makes good drops "reserved domains", which means they plan to promote .biz, otherwise they can't profit on reserving them. A great .biz domain drops, I handreg it for 5 USD max, and there is no buyer for one year, but I can't renew it for 15 , so I decide to drop and maybe to re-buy for 2 or 5 USD, but I realize the .biz registry grabbed it for themselves. So, whatever you do you can't profit on .biz, except for owning some great domains and keeping them for 20+ years.

Unfortunately we need someone been through the 1929 Great Depression :(

Just over Christmas, we were talking about all those who have passed and no longer making back to the family home (we call it 'the big house'). Oddly enough, we shared a lot of stories were about those family members that lived through the depression here in America and what they had to do to survive...for YEARS.

Unfortunately, the collective memory here (USA) has faded concerning the hard times and the vast majority of people will have difficulty surviving in a non-animalistic manner if/when another major down cycle happens. Other parts of the world have learned to live with much less excess and waste of treasure and will fare better as a result. (now I want to go out and buy the newest eye phone...not!)

Unfortunately we are at the end phrase

If there was no Trump, and bankers were in charge of the West as before, we would see a financial collapse or a world war. And in case of war, only Russia would survive.
