Be very careful about using the delete button on names you have registered at Dynadot. They want to charge me $79.99 a piece for 2 names that have months left before expiration. So if you make a mistake or change your mind about a delete and forget to cancel it they don’t care and charge a very high fee even with plenty of time left on the registration. NameSilo has restored a few names to me for free in the past.

1) When in doubt, don’t delete or don’t deal with Dynadot. I have spent a ton of money there in the last three years and this is just one of their questionable practices.

2) They hold your money hostage for payout on sold domains if its under their threshold.

3) They don’t give automatic refunds to the method of payment you used when you pay for an auction and the owner does a last minute renewal.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Why would you delete a domain with 6 months left?

Thats really not the point. The point is I paid for a year and it can be restored.

Sometimes After the fact I am on the fence about potential conflicts. Or a name very close to my name becomes developed. I monitor similar names to mine and trademarks too.I don’t just buy the name and sit on it. I am periodically evaluating if its still a wise registration or not.

Ok. You still decided to delete it though. I don't know how hard it is for a registrar once it's deleted to restore and what the costs are but basically it would be the same effort it takes in restoring an expired name. I think charging a fee is fair.

We do understand your frustration, unfortunately restoring deleted domains is a manual process that central registries will usually charge a much higher fee for, we do try to keep all of our prices as low as possible but it is usually not possible for domain restores unfortunately.

I just checked Namesilo and they charge $75. Epik $100. GoDaddy $80. Namecheap $88.88. Just to name a few.

Dynadots fee doesn't seem unreasonable.

If anybody knows, I would be interested to know what the wholesale cost of restoring a .com is.

To be exact, the price we charge for a restore due to the deletion of a domain, not renewed (Domain in RedemptionPeriod) is 90$
I will see what we can do here for NP members

Thanks. Your registrant agreement states $100 though. Not that anybody is reading those :)

Could you also check what a registrars cost towards the registry is? Just out of curiosity.

Deleted is pretty much like Redemption. So yeah, big fees with almost any registrar.

Isn't it because of registry fee for restoration from Redemption Period? If so, this can explain how some registrars may sometimes restore domains for free - no Redemption Period started yet, maybe just "registrar hold" or some sort of internal "customer deleted the domain" status. Afaik it is what Uniregistry does - I deleted something once at Uni, the domain disappeared from my account, showed "Pending restoration or deletion" in whois, and was really deleted only after the expiration

NameSilo charged me nothing because they store the name for the year period you paid for before it goes to their dropping auction. This may have changed as it was a while ago.

I am not saying I shouldn’t have to pay something. This was a cautionary tale post about the HIGH FEES for other domainers to know. A delete still has time on it, dropping names do not. They are however treated the same.

Thanks for that info. That's insane though. If I would request my registrar to delete a name (unlikely event) I would want them to delete it. Not keep it on hold or anything.

This may actually be a bigger issue. Are you still officially the registrant when they 'store' it?

The registrar is technically the registrant for the rest of the course of the period its paid for. They basically store it until its in the drop stage. So this is different than a grace deletion or a redemption period restore.

@karmaco You're right, the fees to restore a domain are much higher than if you were to simply register or renew a name. The reason for this is when you manually mark a domain for deletion, and our system processes the request 30 days later, it goes into the redemption period stage. At this point, we have to restore the domain with the central registry and get it back into your account (the same way we would if it was expired and in redemption).
