Would like some ideas
Why would someone repeatedly check on the whois of my domain ?
Something like 12 times in the past 2 months

Thanks

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
It could be a bot or someone willing to buy
Check if the ip is owned by a local ISP or an hosting company/tech giant

@Rob Monster @Gube , I would like to see one feature on those ips shown in Epik performance page , it would be great if all ips are hyperlinking and up on clicking on those links, it should go to page where it shows the location details of that ip.

If possible, if user can select all or some ips at one go and clicking on show ip location should show all selected ip addresses and other details at one go.

Otherwise user need to copy one ip and go to some third party site to check address or location of ip and again come back to Epik and check for another ip address and so on is the time consuming process .

Thanks,
Sumeeth

Agree that it is great feature of Epik to be able to see how many times each name had whois searched, as well as which have multiple searches from same IP.

Re the specific question, I found a fair variation on my names at Epik. In general more searches than I would have expected for names. One of mine with a lightly developed site gets a lot of searches - was your name with a lot of searches developed?

Its just someone monitoring the expiration status or mining information. I'm guessing the name was renewed recently?

Atleast something is better than nothing. For example I have outbound to some client and I can know if I am getting views from the area which I outbounded.

It can be checked
As for the time frame, it's indicated next to the IPs

This feature has been available at GD for years (just letting people know its not just epik that offer this). Some names are whois checked hundreds of times a month but it doesn't mean anyone wants to buy the name and unless you can filter out bots (which is probably what most of them are) it's not of massive use.

Thanks I had not realized that before your post. Where do I look for the information in my GD panel, if it is simple to explain, or a link. Thanks in advance.

Hi Bob,

In the domain manager "My Domains", you're able to export a file (CSV, or XML) which allows you to see all information pertaining to each domain. In order to see the WHOIS searches, you have to select the "All Columns" option. I've found no other way to see this data in the dashboard.

It's a bit hacky, but it works. I would prefer that the data be directly visible in the dashboard, though.

Thank you so much! I actually had never used the CSV/XML export feature (I only have a few dozen names at GD so don't need as much data in out as most) but I see it is really helpful in a bunch of ways. Thank you so much! Epik method is certainly easier, you just click Performance tab to see an overview, but it is great to know it is available in other platforms. Thanks again.

I have learned something very helpful already on NamePros today and still on my first coffee! What a helping community NamePros is.

You're welcome, Bob!

Agreed - Epik's method of displaying the data is much more intuitive. I implore GoDaddy to implement something similar.

Well thank you for your overly kind remarks but as Michael Cyger said in an interview a while ago, one of the greatest things about domaining are all the great people in it. I love learning from others every day on NamePros. I have spent a lot of time here :xf.smile: but it still is true that almost every day I find something new and helpful, like this way to get more data from GD. I had actually never tried the spreadsheet export feature at GD.

I try to read every post for what helpful insight or information it contains. I honestly try to see both sides of issues, not that I always succeed. In 1979 I made an assumption in my job about someone's actions and motives. 99% of people would have made the same assumption. I discovered I was wrong, and took steps to make up to the person. Now 41 years later I still remember that, and try not to repeat my error. Sometimes seeing the positive will let your good intentions be abused, I am sure. But the vast majority of the time I firmly believe that people are good and do the right thing.

NamePros is a truly remarkable online community - maybe such communities exist in other areas, but I think it is relatively rare. Let's all make the most of it. Thank you to everyone who contributes each day.

I realize my post here is largely off-topic :xf.sick:. But on the issue of usefulness of Whois searches, I admit until I started using Epik I had never really even considered the question. Nor have I actually ever searched IP addresses provided to guess who might be looking at my domain name, and why. However, I do admit that one domain name that I was debating whether to renew or not, I did renew partly on the basis that it seems to regularly get lots of people searching the Whois. Is that a valid way to use the data? Not sure, maybe. For me I was slightly leaning to renew, despite no offers, and it helped push me to try one more year.

Thank you for your kind comment. Have a nice day.

Bob
