Hi NamePros,

We’re announcing the launch of the .crypto domain extension on 12/11. 50,000 domains have already been registered. Go to https://unstoppabledomains.com/?ref=namepros to find available domains.

You’ve probably all heard about cryptocurrency, but may not be aware that new domain extensions are being launched on blockchains. These domains are not part of the ICANN system. They are stored by the owner, with their private key, not by a registrar like Godaddy. No one can transfer a domain or update it other than the owner. If you store website content on decentralized storage instead of Amazon Web Services, then no one can take down your website other than you.

A blockchain domain + Decentralized storage = An uncensorable website

This is the beginning of an entirely new internet built to protect free speech around the world.

Blockchain domain features
  • No Renewals - Pay once and it’s yours ... forever

  • No Custodian - Domains are stored by the owner. No third party can move or update them

  • Payments - The domain can be used as a payment address for cryptocurrencies. Send Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, or any other currency all to the same domain

  • Uncensorable Websites - Attach domains to content on decentralized storage and create an uncensorable website

  • Transfers - Escrow agents aren’t needed. Transfer to anyone in the world in under 1 minute with no risk of being defrauded

We’ll be moderating this thread and we’d love to hear your thoughts!

And a .crypto isn’t even a real domain, as some have already pointed out.
Blockchain domains aren't meant to work the same as what you are defining as a "real domain."

Here's some lingo you may want to become familiar with if you want to understand what a blockchain domain is:

Decentralized web
Web3.0
Decentralized Storage
Interplanetary File System (IPFS)

Its early in the decentralized web's infrastructure. The chassis is just being built. No doubt the vision to see what's coming is not for everyone. Although, that doesn't make blockchain domains NOT "real."

Good luck when ICANN approves .crypto as a gtld. The shenanigans by unstoppable domains have disaster written all over. And I know they’ll say they’re first to the party so they have claim to the domain space. Wrong!

I dont see ICANN or the DNS being an issue. The .crypto extension will be first and foremost on the decentralized web. All of the major browsers that are working on Web3.0 will pick up .crypto as default for the decentralized web....in my opinion.

Any example of a .crypto domain which we can visit?

Reminds me new.net domains.

.crypto cannot be claimed until tomorrow (unless delayed again), though you can preorder them. There are some .zil domains available as websites. .zil came out months ago, evidently. You can view some websites here (at your own discretion)... https://viewblock.io/unstoppable?hasIPFS=true
Simply click on the north arrow to view the site. alon seems safe, a simple Hello Wordl.

Any .zil domain we can visit?

If you have your own domain system, then you also need your own browser.

Go to that site and click on the north arrow for any of those .zil domains. Those are websites published into IPFS and viewed through Pinata.cloud. I have clicked on some, but not all. I did not come across anything that I shouldn't see. Currently, they are primarily simple Hello World websites. Personally, I will be playing around with website building...just to see what its like and learn the possibilities. I won't be putting anything up that cannot be put on any other extension.
Next year should be an interesting year with UD where they will be developing tools for users.

Oh, forgot to mention... yes, you are correct. Browser support will need to come in the future. Currently, extensions can be added to browsers to view websites. But the browser will need to work with UD to get integrated. I think this would be the most logical step...and be huge.

@Keith, they don’t care about trademark. I asked what happens when a site host child porn or sell human organ, and all I get is “we can’t do anything” and first-amendment bullshit. If whitewashing the dark Web is your thing, then they will be happy to take your $$$

You’re pushing the fact that these are untouchable once they’re in someone’s “custody”. What happens in the case of TM infringement?
We're running a sunrise period just like what a traditional TLD would do. We built an (expansive) list of trademarks as well as common use brand terms and blocked them so they can't be purchased until December 31st, 2020. There's more than 1M domains blocked. Brand owners can come and claim them during that period. If the brand shows TM ownership or common use, we give the domain to the brand for free. More than 1,000 brands claim including several Fortune 500 companies. There's also a process to report a domain that's being used in a way that violates a trademark. That list of 'bad domains' is on the blockchain so apps can show warnings like 'potential phishing site' or just not show the site at all.

so .crypto is real ? i thought it was a joke

Can you elaborate on that more? Who is involved in that process?
This is something we've been running for the past several months. You submit a request with proof of ownership - either the TM proof or control of key properties if it's a common use term (.com website, social media accounts). We're taking an expansive view of what can count for claiming to onboard as many companies as possible.

I think this has disaster written all over it. However, I hope I'm proved wrong.

Regarding the trademark process... I would agree that companies with brandable names like Google, Microsoft, Sony, etc should be able to claim their trademarks. However, I do not agree that companies which use generic words like apple, jaguar, amazon should automatically be granted those names.

Those are common words and are not considered TMs

The nature of self custody is that no one can move a domain. This is the same way that cryptocurrency works. No one can reverse a transaction or move an asset other than you. That's the nature of the security model. However, it's very important to prevent bad actors. This can be done on the 2nd layer where apps refuse to resolve websites associated with bad actors. In fact, apps can share a single filtered list across them. This is better than the way filtering currently works where Youtube, Facebook, etc. all do their own filtering in secret and can't mutually add to the same filtered list.

Curious as to why certain generic keywords are designated as PROTECTED....

In general, the blockchain is pseudo-anonymous, but is subject to analysis. It's not the best t

Once you distribute a domain on the blockchain, it's too late. Our lists were overly inclusive and common words are being removed.

The nature of your denial and refusal to take responsibility is that no major player would support the crypto address. Whoever makes the filter will subject themselves to lawsuit for illicit behavior by bad actors. That’s just bad business for anyone but you.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. The way a blockchain based system works is that an asset, once transferred, is completely controlled by the owner. This is how blockchain works. This is also the security of the system. Because no one can move a domain around other than the owner, things like hacking of registrars and take downs from authoritarian governments become impossible. We believe this is a good thing.

99.99% of users and applications won't want websites to be completely unfiltered. Anyone can create a list of bad domains and post that to the blockchain for browsers to read.

This would not force Chrome or Firefox to show things they deem inappropriate. They will just filter out that content. This is exactly how it works currently for search engines and social media platforms.

What's new here is that if people want to view a website, even if it's unpopular, they will find a way.
