I'd like to launch a small marketplace with a specific name, but the .com is owned by hugedomains. Are there any issues or downsides I should consider that will come with just buying the .co instead? Appreciate any input!

I'm not a big fan of .co. the only .co's I own are defensive redirects to the .com. Is HD asking too much for the .com? I bought one from them few months back for a site I'm developing, was able to spread it out into 12 equal monthly payments which is nice.

The .CO after-market is decent. If the .COM at Huge Domains or North Sound Domains (Frank S), it is basically "off the market". So, for one year at like $2.99 for a GA .CO on promo, I think good risk-reward ratio there. However, if not sold or leased after 1 year, you might end up dropping it.

if you have opportunity to secure .com on installment i would suggest go with them..
else choose other name in .com but start your project with .com
good luck!!

How about a new niche if not currently actively selling that subject or now totally saturated I can see strengths in some single words perhaps 2 words but I would really evaluate per niche if many are taken but not developed eg employment. Every combo you dream about jobs work is taken but you might get good co etc or move on to another niche.
