World Futuristic Revolution in 2020
A interesting look back at the first post in this thread.
Intel, who never rally wanted to make the 'Merged' HMD (just sell the chips and lease the patents) bailed out on us as Qualcomm was to much a cost match for them as we now see in the stand-alone VR/MR market and AR glasses market as well, all using their chips.
Hololens 1 was equipped with a Intel Atom hybrid cpu
and I think Hololens 2 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon SOC.

It's going to be hard to get any real competition in this area, even though it will improve with time, you can look at the general capabilities of Qualcomm's SOC to know what the 'limitations' are for the general consumer market for the next 8+ years.

Black Friday
According to this early peek at black fri sales pricing, the Oculus Quest is not among them.
https://mashable.com/shopping/best-black-friday-vr-headset-deals/
Perhaps they feel the demand will be strong enough without it.
They can always change their mind closer to xmas.

For me, I am likely to update to Vive Pro or Cosmos after this season is over.
Still have a eye for PiMax 5k

Facebook to buy Beat Games
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/facebook-buy-beat-games-ups-133701664.html

Everyone wants a strong names base competition, and you not going to get it for as long as this remains a big-boys only game. When one of these behemoths decides to dominate a category, many would be start-ups never start-up. Sometimes they can't even get financed except from even fewer private investors.
It is not good for names in general for a top-down expansion.
That is much of the reason we have waited so long.

Not to infer that things are not moving in a healthy pace right now because it is.
So, I am stuck with thinking at least one of these big-boys will have a attractive 'package' to lure consumers, which is still a good thing. But I think their own actions have been destructive to their market thus far.

Normally you end up with 'near monopolies' when a market is saturated and the profits are falling as the smart phone market is about to go through in the coming years, Not as it starts.
I am not a fan of merger and acquisition. It is a job destroyer, not creator.
Just something for you to consider in your overall scope of the market.
If it is good for jobs, it is 'likely' good for names as well.

Qualcomm and NEW AR Glasses with XR2 & 5G
https://techcrunch.com/2019/12/05/q...-platform-for-5g-connected-ar-and-vr-devices/

And one example of Snapdragon 865 power and the cost effective limitations in next years VR & AR stand alone devices.

After looking at this news of Samsung Casting to TV
https://bgr.com/2019/12/06/samsung-tv-tap-view-patent-details-new-feature/
One could easily see that you should also be able to cast to a wireless HMD as well.
Samsung looks to be headed in that direction.
I have always thought that the smartphone would be the device for portable VR applications, just not the slide in device that is now dead in the water. We shall see. More advancements in stand alones powered by the same Qualcomm chip may make it moot. So there is lot's of room for me to be wrong about that for at least VR anyway. But I see them being the network gateway at a minimum for portable VR/AR applications.

Sold a bit more than 10k
Going to guess that went to someone in the antenna feed-line industry. Like for Cellular or TV/Radio.
Any info?

The Valve Index VR Headset Sells Out Before Christmas Thanks To ‘Half-Life: Alyx’
https://www.forbes.com/sites/joepar...ut-before-christmas-thanks-to-half-life-alyx/

No doubt the 'Half Life' package made the early sales.
Betting after xmas the price will come down and the packaging of HL is lost.
Since there are no real numbers on sales, we have to use the users at Steam for reference and nearly 5% is not bad at all for a new device in a field that finally has competition of sorts. And likely to triple by this time next year. 120hz refresh and 130d fov are surely a solid clean video for VR

As this sale turns out...
We would like to think it was related to our industry, but, it is a co who makes eye testing equipment.

Oculus Devices Sold Out in a Positive Sign for Virtual Reality
https://www.fool.com/investing/2019/12/27/oculus-devices-sold-out-in-positive-sign-for-virtu.aspx

"The Oculus Quest from Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) was billed as the most important headset for the virtual reality (VR) industry in 2019, and in many ways it has lived up to expectations. The headset has made VR more mobile and accessible (both in price and ease of use), and it's apparently selling better than Facebook had planned.

If you try to order an Oculus Quest headset today, you can expect a nearly two-month wait. Has VR finally reached the mass market?
...."

I will say it is beyond my expectations ! And I was heavily weighted on it.

I actually think this will be a thing sooner rather than later...
VR Fitness Awards 2019
https://www.vrfitnessinsider.com/vr-fitness-awards-2019/

Pay attention to the branding. It's not necessarily using the terms of fitness or health names.
They are mostly VR Generics by sports field. But, still in infancy.
I hold quite a few in this area.
But my 3/4 favorites are FitnessHolodeck and HolodeckGym & VRFitnessRoom(s)

But I think the larger picture is that all those possibilities we seen 3-4-5 years ago and more are starting to happen. Just because iMax dropped the ball over shareholder demands for profits today, it did not kill the ideas. But someone has yet to show a successful biz model. Others will follow.
And this one is probably not it either but it seems a niche marketplace.

More positive signs VR has good set of roots now...
Superhot VR grosses over $2 million in a single week
https://www.pcgamer.com/superhot-vr-grosses-over-dollar2-million-in-a-single-week/

Callum Underwood boasted on Twitter: "SUPERHOT VR has grossed over 2 million dollars on all platforms in the past 7 days alone. Thank you players!!"
---
We are likely to hear more stories like this in the coming months as all those recent xmas HMD sales are hungry for content. But it's a very good sign to dev's to get a move on, There is money to be made.
