Not every rebrand and domain change goes as planned. In the case of Looka formerly Logo Joy they are now looking at laying off 80% of their employees. Patricio Robles wrote a piece on Econsultancy that delves into the rebrand and what might have gone wrong. The article is an especially good read for anyone who is thinking of a domain name change and redesign of their website … [Read more...]

(title says) losing 80% of search traffic

(content says) laying off 80% of their employees

(to confirm) 80% for both loss of traffic and employee layoffs?

Edit/Added:
A once high-flying startup has laid off 80% of its employees and its survival is in doubt following a botched rebrand involving a domain name change that reportedly caused it to lose 80% of its organic Google search traffic.

Might have something to do with using a worse name. Never understood why anyone would want to ditch the keyword based branding. wth is looka?

They went with more of a brandable brand then keyword brand. Works for some and not for others, but I feel as this wasnt just the rebranding itself but more the whole company.

IMO and what it sounds like is that they were going under for quite some time and decided to try a rebrand method... but i guess it still didnt help.

Just my opinion....

Looka sounds like a high end escort service or a dating website that caters only to good looking people. "That girl is a looka". It's an awful name for an AI driven logo service.

The most important lesson here is not the rebrand itself but the quality of name chosen.

This is why quality matters!

Read the story, guess that is an SEO strategy gone wrong not the name just the name itself. Doing such requires hiring SEO expert with experience in such to ensure they do not lose traffic.
I just did something similar for one of my project and under 24hours, my content started ranking on Page 1 for keywords the old domain was struggling to rank for and documented my seo case study here pretpersonnelenligne.org/seo/seo-case-study/

They probably read an article on branding and screwed up, the name they had was fine.
