Will Web 3.0 and blockchain make the current DNS system obsolete?
Currently there is alot of excitement from many developers that Web 3.0 is the future. It is showing great promise with privacy, storage and multiple decentralized applications. Most interesting is that many of the protocols and applications being built bypass the current DNS infrastructure that ICANN, in a very centralized manner, controls.
There are several protocols on Web 3.0 that are designed to have all the technical benefits of DNS plus many more advantages. Many are not just envisioning Web 3.0, but building p2p website and content hosting (IPFS), email dapps, decentralized identities, payment dapps etc., etc. Basically Web 3.0 can do everything DNS offers plus much more. Things are moving fast and theoretically this could make DNS obsolete in the future.
Currently, there are several decentralized (the amount of decentralization can be debated) "Blockchain Domain Services" that are gaining ground, specifically .eth and .crypto. The populararity of these blockchain domain names can be demonstrated by the large amount of Twitter users recently displaying their .eth domain in their profile. Here is an example of the popularity of .eth with the face of Ethereum, a popular blockchain, displaying his .eth blockchain domain. There are countless others doing the same.
