I've got an Indian accent and I do not sound like Appu from "The Simpsons" When I pitched in my end-user she taught I was a scammer and I had a weird experience hehe

What was your experience do share in the comment section?

Hello and welcome! Cold calling is often referred to as "outbound" in the domain community. You will find, by search, that there is a ton of information written on the subject of outbound phone calls as well as outbound email..

Best of luck to you!

I managed an out bound (telesales) call center back in the mid 90s. It was much easier back then, however, the foundation remains the same.

While this may be unfortunate, 2 core variables are that culture and language dialect must be on par with the target consumers.

It's simply human nature for one to trust local more than distant. The more local you sound to them, the more you achieve instant trust or authority. The more distant you sound, the more defensive people get, making it harder to establish a line of communication.

You may need to find a partner for some target audiences you have a hard time adapting to. This is where domain brokers from a local area/region become a great choice, to bypass or break the ice of cultural communication issues.

That's my opinion anyways.

If you are calling businesses then cold calling is not that bad...... you need to be able to communicate effectively over the phone. If you can't do this then this might not be the right approach for you

If you want to give it a crack though.......

Use Lusha and it will scrape direct work contact details off LinkedIn for the Directors, VP's or business owners you are trying to contact.

When you call them make sure you introduce yourself , why you are calling, mention the unique selling points of the name making sure this is related to their company and how the name will benefit them - do this promptly and with some energy in your voice and try not to sound like you are reading off a script

Don't ask them how they are (you don't know each other and it sounds insincere) and do not ramble.

Keep it short and on point

I personally always use their first name - Hi, is that "John"? Hi it's Nick here calling from xyz the reason I am calling is...........go straight in.

Don't care if you have a PHD are a CEO or have stick up your arse, always use their first name, do not put them on pedestal, they are just people.....

Tell them you have an email proposal laid out and you will send it over to them and will call back in a couple of days to discuss further and see if they have any questions. Ask them to check their junk box as you have not sent them an email before so it might end up in there and ask them if they have any questions at this stage - if they ask how much your looking for (great sign!) be direct and quote a figure, no ums and arghs and stay quiet after quoting the price

Thank them for their time and get the details over to them ASAP

It is then up to you to send an email and call them back in a couple of days and that is a different kettle of fish....

Cold calling is a numbers game, the more people you speak to the more chance you have of selling. You will be told I'm not interested (move on to someone who wants to talk to you then), hung up on (who cares) and people can be rude as you are calling them out of the blue. Just move on to the next call as it brings you one step closer to closing a deal :xf.smile: Have fun with it and make sure to be yourself, people buy off people (y)

MY EXPERIENCE:
If I leave my phone on the hook, I will get approx. 5-8 phone calls per day from "Indian" web companies...so of course i leave phone off hook. They average about one per hour.

They ruined it for you.

Get "local" partner to call. If you have shitty names like me, forget about it.

A while ago I received an e-mail asking if I wanted a .com domain. I checked the mail’s domain’s Web site and it was a parked domain. I never replied.

Then it was on auction, and I happily paid a low low $3K for it.

Whoever that person was did reach the right buyer, and could have sold it for much higher price. BUT the mail had NO credential.

So the lesson here: build a credible business first.

Just say, someone is selling this domain. So even if she thought you are a scammer, the seller is not.
Girls call guys jerks just before they start dating them. The same situation here.

Not to mention, duct-cleaning, my computer has a virus, Canadian Revenue Service, these scammers are all from INDIA- so it does not help your cause. I get them all the time.

There can be 100 positive outcomes, but it takes just 1 negative outcome to ruin it. And this is what's happened with the outbound phone markets originating from India. Personally, it's gotten so bad that when I receive a call from someone with an Indian accent, I tell them they may only proceed if they give me their credit card info. Then they promptly hang up on me.

Not your fault @Sanjeev Tiwari , but it's out of control:

Your best bet is personalized emails, imo, or solid landers.

As per your original question, I think a genuine cold-call to well-researched business that could benefit from your domain could have more positive results over a mass-targeted approach. People are wise now, not to mention many are ditching land lines and going mobile only.

@Not a robot what do you mean by build a credible business and how do you do that

When I first got the offer, I was like the majority of the people -- we don't know anything about domaining. I did know about WHOIS, though (most people don't). I was tracking that particular domain, and I knew it had expired. So here's why I didn't bother replying the direct offer (assuming it was legit):
  • The e-mail had a random domain, and that domain's site was a parked page
  • The domain has expired, so how can there be an owner?
  • If the domain was on sale, why I couldn't find it on GoDaddy or Network Solutions?
  • The domain I was interested in did NOT have for-sale offer
So, let's say I still do NOT know domaining, and you are offering me a domain. And let's say I'm also the decision maker (I don't have to report it to someone else). Here's a list of things that will convince me to start a conversation:
  • The e-mail must come from an established Website (i.e. no Gmail).
  • The business Website must have a wealth of content indicating it's from a domain investor.
  • The business Website must look legit and have verifiable contact information (address, phone number, and e-mail address). I probably won't call you, but I sure will do a Google Map Street View on your office.
  • The e-mail must have your real name and brief introduction about yourself.
  • The domain you are offering must have a for-sale landing page.
  • If the domain is on a market, the for-sale landing page must direct me to the market.
  • If the domain is not for public sale, the for-sale landing page must direct me back to your business Website.
  • The landing page and the business Web site must explain how domain transaction works. I will not give you $30K without assurance I won't get burned.
Remember, these are what I'd need to start a conversation. We aren't even half way to a sale.

I have been listening to the DomainSherpa podcast. And there is one thing I absolutely agree with the Sherpas - most domainers shouldn't do outbound themselves.

Thanks for your reply @Not a robot, quite an eye opener.
Like you concluded, most domainers should not do out bounding themselves, I for one just list at the market place contact the end users with a link to the sales page maybe that has been the reason for low sales also my market place has been Dan.com, which I believe is also a factor that contributes to the low sales been recorded. All the same I will try to implement some of your suggestions and see what it gives. Thanks
