The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The CA Domain Squad comprised:
The Sergeant: not just a "by the book" type, he wrote the book.
The Rookie: What lacks in experience he makes up for in knee-high socks.
The Loose Cannon: Rumor, bought a poorly made juicer, from a .com website. never the same since.
The Vet: He retires in two days. Hopefully we can wrap this up by then.
Now, i am even more 100% .com. :-P
Seriusly, tho Good luck, Great White North

Signed,
your friendly neighbor from the south

We believe the choice is clear, even giant countries like China and India are seeing a vast migration of .com away from country codes.

Comments form @Bob Hawkes or @MapleDots ?

I personally see no migration to .com from .ca. For small and medium sized businesses in Canada the extension of choice is .ca (some use .com but many more .ca and surveys repeatedly show Canadians have a higher trust level in .ca).

It is true that multinational companies, whether Canadian founded or from outside, almost always have the .com, but that is no change from a decade ago. Some big companies even though their headquarters use a .com have their Canadian customers use a Canadian page at the .ca.

There is also a small amount in other TLDs,, but .ca and .com dominate with no change in trend as I see it (or from reading stats via CIRA or CENTR of which Canada is an associate member). I do occasionally see an .app, .co, .me, .church, and some others. Of course nonprofits are often on .org. And a bit of .net use.

I am trying to think of all the places I do business with. I can only think of one that has done a change in domain name over the past year or two, and that was from a .ca to a .coop but they still use the .ca as well for redirection (and possibly email).

I have little doubt that in a decade .ca will be as strong as it is today. I think there is some chance it is even stronger.

@MapleDots has a longer time frame domain wise, and also more direct business involvement, so interested to hear what he has to say on the question.

Thanks for your wise input Bob, yours is always the voice of reason. :) Do you have any thoughts on the main topic of the thread, the .ca vs .com campaign?

@outofoz32 the notion that businesses are migrating away from .ca is definitely not true. Most businesses in Canada will register both if available or the .ca if the .com is gone. If they are an international company and the .com is gone then they will go domaincanada.com etc.

.ca is very strong in Canada and the campaign you are referencing was a comedy campaign run by cira, it was meant to be funny.

In Canada almost every retail corporation there is uses the .ca for their Canadian division.

Walmart.ca
Amazon.ca
Bestbuy.ca
Staples.ca
Amazon.ca
Google.ca
etc etc

There really is little choice unless you the the less obvious like...

Apple.com/ca which is what apple does but guess what?
They still forward Apple.ca to Apple.com/ca so technically they are also using it.

I run 4 businesses myself and have the .ca for everyone and the .com for 3 of them, I could not get it on the fourth.

That said, all but one of my businesses forwards the .com to the .ca

So in Canada there is a really strong mix but on the retail landscape it is dominated by the .ca

The campaign referenced was just good Canadian humour.

.com is always since they are a pioneer for domain extension. All TLd (CCtld and New Gtld) will fight again it. But its so hard to convincing people that domain name not only .com
