Another thread that asked people to list their 5-L .com domains got me wondering if they are in fact a total waste of money for most people. Some of the names listed were truly terrible.

Let's do the math. There are 11,881,376 possible combinations of 5L .com domains. Namebio shows that just over 4,000 have sold this year. The top sale was voice.com and that is indeed an awesome name. But what about the average 5L domain that most people buy?

Well, if around 4,000 of these domains sell every year, it will take around 3,000 years to sell the whole lot. In other words, there is a 1 in 3,000 chance of selling a random 5L domain in the next year.

Many of the 5L names I see people buying and trying to sell are worse than average in my opinion (feel free to disagree).

So if you have a 5L domain how do you plan to sell it when you probably only have a 1 in 3,000 chance of selling in the next year?

The odds are hopelessly against you. Most people are just wasting their money registering these domains.

I hope this post will make people stop and think and also save them some money.

I have to agree with OP, and I belivev the key problem of 5L is, the huge supply, even we ignore the obvious random , if u search it, lots of looks good, sounds good name still avai to reg, may be some people want mining the gem from them....but if this the case, why not invest on more secure assets?

well, if u r skillful enough, may be u will really get good ROI.... no doublt...

Here's my approach:

- I register a very small number of 5L's, being extra careful at how it sounds, meaning, etc (yeh I got a short f... something .com once by mistake, think it might sell though to someone in a particular niche)

- I carefully pick a niche, and build a site around it

- Apply for the trademark for the ones with best results (takes time, investment but not as much as one would think). Meanwhile the project sells stuff and racks in cash

- Once the peak is reached, sell the domain with the bundled TM, with the traffic/ sales history for a significant amount of $$. (this takes about 2 years)

Not only this pays for any renewals meantime, but it also brings profit while waiting for the right customer to bite.

The number of valuable .com 5L's will decline over time. Who picks the right ones, has a good strategy AND is willing to wait will definitely see return on investment. The point is, there are millions of combinations but most are crap and the good ones are like 1 in 10000 or so.

Final note, it is always worth building a site on your domains, not just hold on to them and let them do nothing. Worst case scenario, they can pay for their own renewals, forever. You don't need a ton of traffic to have some ads with a simple site and make $10-$20 over the course of one year. More ellaborate methods can bring much more actually.

I just registered a 5 letter domain hahaha. Kill me !! A few months ago I had found it free, never registered, and I liked it. Pronounceable and attractive, at least to me.
I even like it for some future project
I present to fyppo.com

With 5Ls such as this *yppo, you might want to check WHOIS history to see if they've ever been regged before (if so was it developed, and if so, what for),

to ultimately ask yourself or find if any keyword is noticeable, for *yppo.com, the golden ticket (imo) would be hyppo.com (hippo).

Then, it's worth noting what variations are registered,

what's developed [byppo.com, cyppo.com, gyppo.com, hyppo.com, syppo.com],

what's available at reg fee [wyppo.com, ryppo.com, jyppo.com, qyppo.com].

This is not a recommendation to purchase any domains mentioned in this post. If anything, it could suggest you grace delete your domain and go for something else, but also if your budget allows, and if you're really feeling the *yppo, you have the option to double down and get another variant.

But if other variants are what you seek, note additional options such as *yppa.com. However, yppa loses the ippo for hippo play.

what's developed [nyppa.com redirects for/to new york press photographers association .org]

what's available [byppa.com, fyppa.com, gyppa.com, jyppa.com, xyppa.com]

note* Lyppa.com listed on brandbucket highlighting the keyword lip.

I had seen the variations of ..yppo, but I liked fyppo for months. I think it's more brandable, to my liking. Fyppa is also nice. I appreciate your observations
