Lot's of controversy around .org

https://onlinedomain.com/2019/11/14...o-a-private-equity-firm-called-ethos-capital/

So my question is....

1. How many .org's do you have?

2. How many will you drop if a large price hike comes?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Personally I have 2 .org's

I will continue to renew both even if they double in price.

At two domains it will not affect me in any dramatic way.

I have only 3 and I will renew them, especially iso-9001(.org)

12 orgs. Over 92% .com holdings. I think I would keep them unless the price increases are crazy.

The answer is ZERO as from now, will never be interested in anything besides ".com" in the future..I have others like ".pro,.Life,.coffee...But I dont see any interest in .org...just my opinion.

Regards
😊

Genuine users of .org (And most other tlds) domains would be willing to spend upwards of $150 per year on their domains. This could weed out quite a few domainers. Personal, and novelty websites/domains could be going away and social media platforms could take them over. Already seeing facebook doing a big push and google got rid of their Google+ but you don't think they are going to sit on the sidelines. Amazon has more storage and server capacity than any entity. THe industry will not look the same in 5 years.

I had only ~10 .orgs at the moment they were allowed to increase prices. Resultingly, I already decided not to renew almost all. Once exception is 1 premium short domain, another - a "technical" domain where I have some emails historically. Will drop the second one after changing affected email addresses in all relevant places.

First they were allowed to increase price. Now, we have a private equity firm. It is enough. Hope that at least many non-U.S. .org registrants will switch to their country code TLDs. Some countries do offer .org subdomains under their country codes (.org.au, .org.uk just to name a few). Not sure about US-based .org registrants, since their country code .us is not too popular and switching to .com may not be possible, or practical...

Few ORG's and 95% are .COM. Big bro will cover their renewal easily.

I have about 80 .org domains. Many of them relate to sports, art, health and benefit where I believe that .org does well.

If I look at number and names of financial and legal advisors of the new registry and imagine their salaries I am not sure if the benefit character of .org will remain.

Renewal fees: let´s wait and see if, when and how much they will rise. There is already a big price range following the registrars´ competition and you can save a lot of cash if you chose the right registrar. Using the one or the other .org transfer promo can be even more effective in the future.

Are they now explicitly allowed to set variable prices (= premium renewals) on domain-by-domain basis, like most new GTLDs? Anybody checked all the legal stuff?

If you know why you would buy them, then you would too. :-P

Yes, basically like gtld framework.

I can’t believe the insiders in charge of protecting the essence of the domain space, somehow worked out a golden parachute, then got them to waive the price increase, acquired the extension.

Somebody needs to look into, there is just way to many conflicts of interest, and back channel questions that need to be addressed.

I had up to low xxx for all my domain life.
And no any good results for me in this TLD.

around 30 .org for me - will be keeping a fair few of these over the next couple of years regardless of any price hike....

I am sure people will have a chance to do a 10 year renewal before a price increase which will generate a lot of upfront cash for the registry now. Not really a good option for domainers, moreso end users, domainers probably 2-3 years is best for outgoing renewal.

I have dropped thousands once they hiked the price the last time around. Now down to 20-30. Will drop all but 1-2, if there is another hike.

You can build a non-profit on a .com or cctld just fine. For example, if I were to create a US non-profit, I can opt for .us for $7.99 renewal. And there are some great one worders, acronyms etc. that can be bought really cheap.

I already have a good collection of under 100 .us names, including 1000, approvals, accessory, arms, asu, auditors, bulls, cwc, duke, dispute, earnings, faculty, editions, gizmo, idea, inks, inquire, instruction, instrument, islands, journalist, ranking, returns, wage etc. So I can reinvest my .org renewal/purchase funds into .us, as I would expect lots of non-profits will be looking into buying .us instead of .org if there is 2x+ price difference.

Sold 5 or 6 out of the 30 or so I held for an average $600 over all the years I held them. Dropped the rest. I do appreciate they occasionally sell for good money. But, over the years I found buyers to be fairly upfront about the Cause or Organisation they were representing. and equally upfront about paying more would likely to be frowned upon by their own membership or Charitable boards they represent.

My sales mostly ended up with educational organisations with charitable status. I personally found it a difficult market to operate in - Purely from a just for profit basis

I have 10 at present. But I have sold 12, that I know of, in the past.

I had a example.com domain and a small startup was running on ExampleApp.com

They contacted me and offered $750 for the .com and I came back at 12k.
They called me a few choice words and a month or so later they were running on example.org.

They hounded me for almost a year with offers that never exceeded 1k.

The other day I noticed they gave up and pulled down the website. Not sure how much my .com had to do with that but it looks like they certainly did not do well with the .org.

Personally I never felt comfortable with .org but in certain situations (like the link in my signature) the .org actually makes a lot of sense.

I have 0 .org and I really do not care much, just answering the thread question :)

I have 4 .ORGs, and will probably drop all but 1 if prices are jacked unreasonably high.

I must admit I don't fully understand the variables at play, but what's the likelihood they will raise prices unreasonably high? Isn't it possible that they could even reduce prices in order to get more domains registered? McDonalds sells their food for dirt cheap and that's half the reason why they do so well. #McOrg
