Hi everyone,

I wanted to know a little bit more about Alexa ranking and valuation. I've seen domains within Top 100,000 Alexa sites, offered for sale at fair prices, and when I go to different traffic analysis websites, for many of these sites the stats are awesome. Great ad revenue, backlinks, traffic, thousands of daily visitors, etc. And I mean updated traffic stats. However, when I do more research, many don't even have DA and Estibot value is appraised at less than $100. Other traffic analysis sites display no info, and Alexa site says 0% organic search. I don't usually care too much about the appraised value, but shouldn't Estibot be taking this revenue generation potential into account?
So, when I find domains that fit within this description, I assume it's mainly paid traffic, or low quality links? These sites figures are probably going to fall super quickly, or what?

Thanks.-

Alexa counts all traffic, paid and organic. I haven't visited Alexa recently but they were showing ranked search keywords and other traffic sources (backlinks that send the most traffic)

Alexa doesn't show quality of backlinks. Also if a backlink generates traffic you can't call it low quality link as long as it's not a paid link, even if it has zero SEO authority. Low quality link doesn't generate traffic and has zero SEO power.

I don't use Estibot.

These sites figures are probably going to fall super quickly, or what?

Thanks.-

Likely if ownership changes hand and if the new owner knows nothing about secret traffic methods of the old owner. If you are about to buy one of those sites, seek opinion from an experienced webmaster. Ask for referral traffic stats from the seller. If the seller doesn't give or gives very little data, don't buy that website. After you get the referrals data carefully evaluate the data and ask questions to the seller if something looks suspicious.

Other traffic analysis sites display no info, and Alexa site says 0% organic search.

If it's an aged site, it likely receives no search traffic. It may be receiving high traffic from social media sites though. Referral stats provided by the seller must be studied. Also stats or ranks of different traffic analysis sites may not match. It's not unusual. Generally speaking they are not reliable unless they count each visitor by a script installed on the site. However for me, Alexa top 100,000 is reliable enough.

Alexa <100k is reliable enough. You can unlikely rank under 100k with full of bot traffic.

Good Alexa ranking does not always show good earnings. Alexa 50k site might earn less than Alexa 500k site even if the content is very similar. Because Alexa counts the traffic better from Far East countries including India. That traffic doesn't convert well. Sometimes that high traffic does not even pay hosting cost.

I made it before with bot traffic.

Alexa rank is my favorite indication however must be combined with the quality of the backlinks to the domain. Good backlinks mean a valid alexa rank; spam backlinks mean that alexa rank is also fake (typically when you see a lot of links to a website that are comments posted to blogs automatically)

I have seen tons of domains with viral/bot traffic even in Alexa 10K.

I too have seen weird domains in top 10k that are used by ad, statistics and several online service companies for redirection or just hosting something with no real website with content. I think Alexa must be counting DNS traffic to some extent. So even if DNS/bot traffic gets counted, non-human traffic must be huge. It is impossible to have that much non-human traffic artificially. Otherwise all sites would get top ranks with no problem. My sites with more backlinks have better Alexa ranks. I explain it as More backlinks = More bot and DNS traffic. But on the other hand, More backlins bring more human traffic as well. Another example: One of my sites gets constant attacks from a country and Alexa is showing my site is receiving 99% of traffic from that country and rank my site in that country high. In fact my site receives almost zero human traffic from that country.
