Looks like social.media is pending sale. Looks like Donuts themselves are the registrant and they're using DAN landers for their domains.

What do you all think the price is?

If any new gtld can reach 6 figures it is surely this one?

Easily 6 figures ... the question remains .. will it be the highest public ngTLD sale ever (around 500k)?

It has the potential to be. While "Social Media" is still a monster term and industry, I think the value likely peaked about 3 years ago. That being said .. it's still strong enough so that it has a chance to be the biggest ngTLD sale ever .. so it's still huge! lol .. But the price really depends on who the buyer was.

Very interesting, I wish we'd get to know the sale price.

I agree, this has the potential to be the highest recorder nGTLD yet.

Pretty sure if it was higher than $500k (effectively the highest ever or at least among them), then we will find out eventually. Pretty sure anyone who buys such a domain won't turn away free press! lol

Yes, while Donots do not announce in general their platinum (which this would be) and premium domain sales, they will, I would think unless the end user is really resistant, do a company release on this one. They may delay to time it with the launch of the site though so it may be many months away, possibly.

It is interesting that in a recent DNW podcast a Donuts rep was saying that while platinum sales rate was way up, the super elite $500k level not so much recently.

I am a little torn re probable value on this. It is a fantastic name, but in some ways I can see more business value to some of the other $500k sales, so would not be surprised at a low/mid 6 figure and therefore not set a new high. Although I could readily see a social media marketing or influencer as the buyers.

Thanks for alerting us to this, @Dave !

Bob

It appears that SocialMedia is for sale in 77 extensions, with .net at $99,999 the highest price I saw in a quick glance. It appears no recorded sale for SocialMedia.com? and not for sale now. Also the .org would be very valuable in my opinion.

But Social.Media is a fantastic name, better than SocialMedia in any extension in my view.. GoValue thinks it is worth $3.2k but I think they are kind of off :xf.grin:. They think social.horse has the same value!

What do you think it will be used for?

Wow. Very nice and interesting domain name. Curious to see how owner will use it.

I predicted there will be 1 mil + sale of new gTLD name in year 2019 - now we are almost at the end of the 2019, so I hope this is the candidate.

Hopefully the price will be reported ... the potential is definitely there :glasses:

DX .media sold for $20k a few months ago, and OP for slightly more than that a couple of years earlier, both domainer sales. Those are the highest .media. But clearly social.media is in a different league.

It is so far still being held by Donuts, so if it has sold, nothing yet in terms of transfer or completion.

What do you think it will be used for?
My guess would be one of the social media marketing companies. Here is a list of some of the major players in that niche.

Bob

PS I guess no one has noticed it on the rolling transfer of names DAN show in their blockchain bit. That would tell us the sale is truly happening. Might be worthwhile to monitor it. The DAN sales ledger is here: https://explorer.dan.com/#/dashboard

Thanks for the list Bob. Well, some of those companies could use domain name like social / media very well, considering also how their current names look like :)

Another possibility for end user would be the organization at SocialMedia.org.

The domain name social.media was (is?) also listed on Afternic as a Make Offer with a minimum offer of $50k.

I know that was a typo but I laughed way harder than I probably should at this. Sounds like the sort of name that @Rick Schwartz would call them. :)
I am funnier when I don't notice it!
Yes I would not deliberately call them Do Nots!

Social.media is a great name but I'm not sure it's going to set any records. You can't buy a "social.media". It would be like having "ride.share". All the companies in the space are brands.. Then again, what do I know :). PidgeonDoc.xyz (something like that) sold for 4k, so anything is possible.

So I see this morning it is listed for sale on DAN, so presume no sale happened, for now at least.
