There has recently been some extensive discussion about a Domain Microfinance program. Related to this, there has been an invitation to submit brand names for a charitable entity that I have referred to as the "Goodwill of Domains" where domains, as well as potentially other digital assets, are collected, distributed, and liquidated in order to increase Digital Empowerment around the world.

The original domain search was described here. The thesis is that the democratization of digital technology for propagation of knowledge and cross-cultural engagement can finally unleash the potential to lift up many whose lives have yet to benefit meaningfully from the digital age. The brand we are describing here is about more than domain names. It is about using viable technology to empower content, community and commerce.

Examples of what I mean by Digital Empowerment:

- A self-funding framework for identity and payment that makes it easier and safer to transact with strangers.

- A stand-alone WiFi router and server for under $200 that serves as ISP in a box for an entire community.

- A solar array that costs between $50 and $100 and capable of powering a stand-alone WiFi router and server.

Also, by way of organization update, @Abdullah Abdullah, formerly a NamePros moderator based in Yemen, and recently added to the Epik team will play a leadership role in identifying and screening Digital Empowerment strategies that could benefit from cross-border interoperability and scale economies. This organization may be formed as a non-profit which is why most of the names under consideration are .ORG

In the meantime, specific to the brand name, we have some finalists and would appreciate some input on domain selection. A non-profit entity is expected to be established once the entity has a name. The working name, coined by @Blitzpotz, is DevAid. That one is not bad, but the domain was taken, and I think we can do better anyway.

This thread is also fair game for sharing your best ideas for Digital Empowerment technologies that are mature, or approaching maturity that cost little but have high impact once deployed. The 3 examples cited above are real and are illustrative of the direction I see this going. And of course empowered people will want great domains to power their own ventures!

Thanks in advance for your input on the name selection, and thanks for your input to make the pie bigger!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
If I had to choose one, I'd maybe go with eRise.org, in part because it could allow for tying in with 'empowerment'. Eg:

eRise : Raising up digital empowerment.

eRise : Raising the bar on digital empowerment.

For the first time in participating in these polls, I don't like any of these suggestions. Just being honest as only honest criticism will help you choose a good name.

I submitted these:

DonateDigital.org
KindWeb.org
Peculium.com

My feedback on the ones in the poll:

  1. UpRaiser.org - not too bad but it doesn't sound good when said.
  2. Enricher.org - sounds more like a nutrient or data enrichment name.
  3. Overpower.org - sounds negative.
  4. Benefiter.org - sounds inheritance / death related
  5. Reliable.org - no connection at all to the offering.
  6. Plentiful.org - ditto above
  7. Endowing .org - too obscure but not too bad.
  8. Valueful.org -
  9. Websites.org - would be great name if you were creating websites
  10. DestinedToRise.org - too long and 3 words
  11. DestinedToBe.org- too long and 3 words
  12. DigitalAssist.org - not bad but not catchy
  13. DigitalProsperity.org - sounds like a charity but too long - 7 syllables!
  14. eRise.org - probably the best one if I really had to choose
  15. Digitaler.org - bad
  16. Digitalchampion.org - This is second best
  17. GoodWork.org - too obscure

Didn't love any of the names. Personally I think DigitalAssist.org is the best for the project brief. While names like Reliable and Plentiful are pretty cool one-worders I just don't see how they fit the purpose for this project at all. Just my 2c.

Read the list briefly (on purpose), went away and made a coffee, came back and could only remember GoodWork.org and Websites.org. If you want something global it has to be memorable, easy to spell for non-English speakers, short, and brandable.

Rob, has a lot of experience building out on gtld's, but he has not chosen that path for any of his projects, that does tell us maybe it takes a lot more work to get them off the ground.

I know .com is great, but I feel he is on the right path with going with a .org for this project.
That is why I suggested it to Rob, as he already has an experience with them :) Btw, both those cute domain names I suggested are for $5.14 / year where I keep them, so they are even cheaper to keep then .org or .com.

But if .org is needed, then I would go with great 1 keyworder like give / org.

If that is not feasible, then from proposed options here I would opt for eRise.org, that is actually quite good imo.

Since I wasn't real keen on any of the names in the poll I decided to go through my own list to see if I had anything which might suit. Does anyone here like either of these?:

SharedEconomies.com
iSustainable.com

For both the .org is available for hand reg.
I particularly like the first one, though of course that's just me. I realise some will think it's too long. Anyway, thought I'd put them out there...

All the best with the project Rob, and congrats on moving forward with it so quickly.

P.S. If anyone fancies the .org's for these, it would be nice if you'd leave them available until the name has been chosen, just on the off-chance Rob wants one... Thank you

I think the submissions are very weak ... they do not convey meaning of the project
I think mine does :xf.smile: Search "Digital Champion"..

IMO

My vote is for Reliable.org and Enriched.org

One word, straight forward, connected to the mission properly.

Reliable.org

You can rely on it.

This is an impressive & commendable undertaking. The ability to effectively leverage a unique skill & position that empowers those less fortunate is praiseworthy.

While I'm late with my submission, I believe I have the perfect domain for this endeavour:

Empowers.org

There are no minced meanings, and the intention is clear.

Let me know what you all think.

Example slogans:
Epik Empowers The Individual
Epik Empowers Local Communities
Epik Empowers You To Do More

Empower would be the best name, but I have to admit that is a great keyword to own in the .org extension. Either way you should do well with it.

Quick update here:

@Abdullah Abdullah is going to be the Director of the non-profit entity. For those who don't know him, he is a Somali based in Yemen. He is an exceptionally good researcher and has done past work with UN agencies. I think this role is perfect for him.

We had a good call this morning, and will be exploring establishment of a non-profit entity, likely domiciled in Switzerland and operating as a think-tank and advocacy group, focused on digital empowerment initiatives that are capital efficient, and which improve access to content, community and commerce.

I am really excited about this project and think we are really close to making a decision about a brand name pending some additional research and negotiation with the registrant. I do appreciate the great input that we have gotten from this thread and look forward to sharing details in the coming days.

The poll ends in 4 days.

Some great names on the list - reliable and websites in .org, wow!

We actually acquired Websites.org for $10K last month. I think we'll use that name for a different project. I am currently talking to the owner of Archive.org. Imagine if any website you want could be locally cached without adware, malware, tracking code, and with lightweight images so that the content can be easily consumed in parts of the world with low bandwidth. By leveraging decentralized content delivery, sites that load slowly in some parts of the world, would load very quickly, consuming far less power or bandwidth.

Honestly .. this is a completely different project than when it was first an idea being tossed around. It's turned into something potentially significantly large rand more serious.

That being said, I think what the final entity will actually be will likely still be quite different from the current vary vague and broad outline depending on what you'll discover to be legal or not, technically and financially feasible or not, politically possible or not .. etc ..

I actually think your best bet is to find a quick and easy temporary name, knowing that you're likely need a different name when the final mission objectives and raison d'etre are settled after figuring out what I mentioned above.

Really looking forward to seeing how this develops .. certainly has a lot of potential given your ability to cross-purpose things in an efficient way like you're talking about possibly doing with Archive.org (that being said .. Archive.org is one of the slowest sites on the internet for me .. lol).

PS .. I agree there's likely a much more suitable home for Websites.org than this project.

Thanks @Ategy.com .

Sorry about the expansion in scope. After we hired @Abdullah Abdullah, I realized what we got with him and started to think about the larger potential for Digital Empowerment, and the need for an entity that could go work with think tanks and foundations to put ideas into action. Hence the pivot from being domain-centric.

As for Websites.org, the idea I want to commercialize there is a special mega-crawler that ingests entire websites, and then strips them down to the bone so that they can load very fast, and be locally cached on decentralized CDN nodes so that people with slow or expensive internet can access them with privacy.

I am looking for the right tech partner there. I am in contact with the founder of Archive.org, he does not move at Epik speed.

Yep, archive isn't what it used to be...maybe there is too much data being thrown on the net now unlike there was 10/15 years ago...too many holes in results to make it useful. I opted for screenshots for the data I wanted before they were bought out/ merged. There is definitely room for another site like that...make it free with ads to support overhead/costs.

According to Brewster Kahle, the founder of Archive.org, they host 50 Petabytes of data. Trouble is, a lot of it is Swiss cheese -- and really the UX is ancient. He could fix it easily, but lacks an economic model. Nevertheless, he has been doing a great service for humanity, and I applaud him for that!

Yes, I gave up trying to imagine how much storage it would take!

Perhaps you and he can work something out...it was truly invaluable back in the day and I still check it every now and then...maybe a reasonable yearly fee for 'in depth' results and/or ad placement. I imagine the vast amount of volume users are domain industry types...old fashioned top and bottom banner ads might help...

@Rob Monster

Seems as good as anything on the list. Going off your list of examples, how I'd maybe use it:

Empowers.Org : Digitally empowering individuals
Empowers.Org : Digitally empowering communities
Empowers.Org : Digitally empowering You

A brandable word or phrase meaning 'empower' could be good. Hard to find one. 'Green light' is sort of/kind of one - as in when you green light something, you're empowering someone to make something happen.

Is a fanciful name - eg. like Toki - possible, feasible(?) One that could be linked easily enough with 'digital empowerment'. Also is easiest to TM and defend TM, if wanted.
