According to SearchEngineJournal.com Google is continuing to test search results without showing the entire domain. The website name (keywords) is shown, but not the extension. By doing so this could possibly create new trends in the domain investing niche. The article goes on to quote a Reddit user saying:

“I don’t think this is going to change much in terms of SEO, it just removes one factor that separated good content from good ranking. This is going to normalize the perception of users between traditional tld’s and modern tld’s because they cant subconsciously decide whether or not to click on something based on the perceived trustworthiness of the URL.

I think that fundamentally it is a good thing for new domains trying to get into a niche. this is going to devalue the perceived “vanity” of any particular url, which is good in a climate where basically any URL is taken.”

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Google has become too powerful.

Why spoil a perfectly good recipe?

Change for the sake of Change - some development manager at Google thinks his job might be at risk, so he brainstorms with his staff to figure out a "Big New Project" to not only keep his job but maybe get a big bonus.

And voila!

Is there any potential advertising wise for Google in the change? I am not sure there is, just wondering. It seems each year that Google put more ads at the top of the list of search results.

sure.
If companies are not being found on the search-engine by users (and traffic to their websites decreases), these companies will pay more money to Google in order to appear at the top of the search-results-page.

Google will make more money from Ads in the short-run, but it is a short-sighted idea if people are going to use other search-engines.

The sheeple of the planet are slowly starting to realize they are being spoon feed paid results by giggle. Unlike the VAST majority of the planet, we all know what is happening because we are in the industry.

They are simply doing what they can to maximize profits for their search/money machine because they know competitors are coming along that will offer pure search results without paid placement. If they go back to what worked for them in the beginning...limiting paid responses to the top three spots and indicating they are ads, they can hang on a couple more years to the top position.

Not being able to see the domain...

Good call. It will be a boon to scammers.

google is doing whatever google wants and we will have to adapt. it was the same before, it's the same now and frankly it will continue to be the same as long they have a sizeable market-share in search (aka for a long time).

first of all understand what they are doing. SEJ article says they are displaying only the website name. That's not exactly true, they are testing the idea of removing url for mobile users (because it occupies screen real estate) and displaying only the page title (not the website name).

now that we know that we can modify the page titles of our websites to take advantage of that. the current page title is:
Google Removes Domains From Search | Page 2 - NamePros
and it should be modified, IMHO, into:
NamePros.com - Google Removes Domains From Search | Page 2

that way you take full advantage both of the NP brand and the .com extension. If you think about it, this brings more attention to the domain name, not less.

of course, I'm aware that the blackhat community will try to game the new system and trick some people (and probably succeed for a short while), but let google deal with that.

from pure domaining perspective I don't think it changes things all that much.

giggle, for now, is on top. No business, entity or organization in the history of man has remained on top forever...they are simply trying to remain relevant in the face of overwhelming competition on the distant horizon.

What does this mean? Invest in quality .com domains like they are limited...because they are.
Well said.

Us!? & for free, maybe ...but others who don't know that will be doom or companies will pay money to developers to change ... again.. because google christ can do anything without be put on corner by US government or other legal entities.

In 2009 i developed 2-3 website's i put google ads to earn some money legal ...when was to ad almost 50$ to able withdraw ( at 47 $ ) , recived email & say i click my self illegal on my ads...LOL . Of course not doing this ( know the TOS ) . Google think: ' Why should pay another geek? . We will sent a email to this person & say click on ads on his websites' so from that day i dont give a s*** on G.

Scammers will also take advantage by modifying page titles. Again, the changes being tested is a security issue at large. Showing the entire domain is essential to know you have arrived at the correct address.

Google wants to DESTROY DNS, heard it on the news! If they sow an ideal of irrelevance into the TLD, then they are one step closer to creating a centralized internet based on apps hosted on (mostly) alphabet servers.

Scammers will also take advantage by modifying page titles......

I am sure they will but not just scammers and also others. For example, say you have a mini-site named CNN.biz or whatever (saying at bottom of page in small print the name if based on a Club-N-N or whatever) to avoid a TM issue.

Then you could do good seo work and change your meta tag title and description to say CNN OFFICIAL Website and people will visit since they do not see dot-biz

I don't think this is exactly a good idea. Imagine you're looking for an official website links to banking, govt institutions etc and a rather better search optimized web page comes on top while the real url is hidden somewhere in the 5-6th position. It'll promote phishing attacks among other issues that can arise.

It's nature at play here, greedy companies always self destruct. Google is very greedy and I give them max 5 years to lose their search engine market lead.

A good example is their adsense program that literally steals free impressions from content creators. Getting paid for clicks with banner ads is great for advertisers and for google but extremely bad for publishers, we provide free advertising to brands via unpaid impression. I suggest everyone to stop using adsense for banners.

Good way to jiggle some paid advertising around.

This is really bad news for the NewG's.
Google will only be showing the keyword so a targeted extension becomes irrelevant.

Home.Loans = Home
Vacation.Rentals = Vacation

Exactly

So dot com Domain names won't have the dot com

I just think it's a way of Google refreshing it's pages

So my

1st. Football

Will appear as just 1st lol

Mind you I think the keywords of a Gtld will still rank but just not be visible

I remember something about Google saying that the keyword in a Gtld extension not ranking etc

I tend to work out my own Google search engine organic seo strategy and tweak as appropriate based on search engine results etc

Example

I have a vlog in youtube that shouldn't be anywhere near the top with other vlogs having hundreds of thousands of views but my vlog has about 300 views and is 3rd from top I'm youtube search results for a certain term in search results and the vlog is one a few months old but I worded it using my organic seo strategy and and once it's at the top I can tweak it It's listing as I please etc

Google will do what it wants after all it is its search engine we just provide it with data which it uses to generate advertising dollars

We then just adjust the content of our data accordingly around any such changes Google decides to make its a bit like ranking chess

google will make lot more money if they do that, lot of big name websites might no use google ads that often( i guess), but if google don't show the domain, it will force lot of business to place ads with google to keep this top spot.

I just switched to a search engine that cares, DuckDuckGo.

I hope Google go this route. You probably think I'm mad for saying that but if it leads to people moving away from Google to use other sites because of this stupid change then good! There is currently a monopoly on search, maybe this will lead to an oligopoly.
