Before registering a domain do you check to see if the exact-match social media accounts are available? Interested to know if this availability affects your valuation of a domain name?

Tools such as Namecheckr let you see which accounts are registered vs available, which is generally a good idea when aiming to sell a domain name as a brand. I'm aware that terms and conditions in many social media companies don't allow you to sell accounts, but I would assume if you were selling shoes.com and included twitter.com/shoes, youtube.com/shoes, etc, it would increase the price) Some key checks include:
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • YouTube
  • Instagram

i didn't vote because i don't handreg much these days. i do check before i buy but not for the reason you think.
if are available means there is not much interest and that's a bad sign, just like no other tld taken.

Interesting points. I agree with you if a keyword domain has few social media handles registered then that could be a signal of low popularity. On the other hand if you're creating a unique catchy brand for say Brandbucket and all the social media handles and TLD's are available to register then for me that adds value in terms of end sale.

I voted no as I almost never check. Now and then I do look at Twitter especially if the name is likely to need a related Twitter account. You make a good point re YouTube, and I might start looking more at that. Thanks for the thread. Quite some time ago there was a DNWire podcast on the topic of social media with domains.

Yes, that was it. Thanks for finding the link.

Finished the podcast. Superb. Had no idea people were paying $10,000 for Twitter handles!

Namecheckr is a great tool. Pairing an exact match domain and an exact match handle brings instant credibility and trust to potential ender users. In addition, it also has SEO benefits as Google will often highlight social media accounts in search results.

It's big business!

Many users now type a brand's name (same as SLD) straight into the address bar without searching:

I voted no as I usually don't check. But thankyou for making a great point ! I think I might start checking social media sites now, before I buy a domain

I voted yes I have started looking at twitter, FB, IG and have come across a couple of domains that are linked in bio on profile. Looked like they were starting a brand and just stopped.

I don't know if UDRP exists for social media accounts but the Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts for many brand name companies are not registered. I think you need 100 followers on YouTube to create a custom handle, and many large companies either do not use YouTube or don't have much content which in my opinion is a missed opportunity
