Bought a near expired domain (9 days left) from someone here on NP. Seller quickly pushed the domain to my Godaddy account, which required me to to update the WHOIS info, which prompted a change of owner process which actually required approval by both of us, one it was approved I got an email confirming the ownerhsip change, at the bottom it stated, "Important: The previous owner opted out of the 60-day inter-registrar transfer lock so you can move the domain(s) any time."

Great, no waiting period to transfer it out, which I was keen to do because it needed to be renewed anyway, But I get an email from Godaddy saying it was rejected because "you opted-in to a transfer lock for 60 days". Which completely contradicts their earlier email. Tried to contact support the lady was adamant that there was no lock and I need to contact the registrar I am trying to transfer too because it must be their problem. Even after I forwarded her these GD emails. Obviously under the circumstances there is nothing the new registrar can do.

I did try resubmitting the transfer after she said this, same result. Seems this is enough if an issue to get a note on my new registrar's support page on failed transfers, which seems to indicate GD always enables the 60 day lock even off you choose to opt out. It suggested a couple of GD emails you can try to try to get the lock lifted. I wrote them quoting the first email where it said the previous owner opted out...fingers crossed.

Meanwhile looks like GD is going to force me to renew with them, because I barely have enough time now to finish a full transfer period before expiration as-is. By the time this gets fixed, if it gets fixed, GD will basically extort a renewal fee from me.

So lesson learned, I'm not accepting any more GD pushes.

If you change any info on the incoming transfer they lock it for some amount of days. Just ask for the code next time.

You missed the point.

GD's email confirming the change of owner said the transfer was opted out of and it could be transferred out at any time. GD support then said there is no lock of any kind preventing the transfer, even though the transfer had been denied.

FWIW I emailed GD at the email listed on my new registrar's support article, initially I got a canned response saying it cant be changed. So I responded with a copy of the email where is says the lock was opted out of and the domain could be moved at any time. They quickly responded saying they removed the lock. And I just confirmed the transfer has now completed...it should not have taken all of this.
