After the accident, my verbal skills were totally a mess. What seemed a minor head injury was in fact a life changing event.

I no longer was a really good programmer, instead I was struggling to just be okay.

It took me way too much time to explain any complex logic because the words just wouldn't come. I knew what I wanted to say but I had way too much difficulty saying it.

So I was forced to find something else to do.

People may lose verbal skills temporarily and may be forced to do something else (not necessarily for losing some verbal skills) not only for physical accidents but also for psychological depression after social and financial accidents. You may lose some verbal skills even if the accident does not harm your body physically and similarly it can take years to recover. Accidents are not always physical and can happen to anyone anytime. Thanks for sharing your personal story. It is very educational.

Part time for me. It means I've been in profit for the last 7 years but my life can't depend on domaining.
I've had 1 year over XXX.XXX$ in profit, a couple in XX.XXX and the other in X.XXX. This means that I need other source of income to be sure to eat every day.

I debated between one of the part-time choices or hobbyist - I do this not primarily to make money but rather because I find it interesting, challenging, and fun, like most good hobbies. I try to never put significant funds into it, but I put everything I make back into other domains and renewals, so at least until or if I change that, I don't in a sense make a profit. I view my approach as bootstrap - start with tiny startup funds (literally a few tens of dollars), sell some at low but profitable prices, use that to buy more and hopefully a bit better quality, and so on.

I am not surprised that there is such even divergence of responses. People have very different goals and we should all be careful of trying to influence others to go into what is the right fit, or domaining approach, for us.

Also yes to reminding members to stay true (stay strong) to what's right for them.

I am building a media company, plus consulting work so domaining is more of a hobby /side income thing for me.

I started off as a hobbyist in 2015, registering a lot of new gTLD’s like student.pizza, student.coffee, midas.jewelry, tame.dog, oxford.delivery etc. Actually I saw Amazon was registering a lot of city.delivery domains so I picked up oxford.delivery & cambridge.delivery & was surprised they weren’t taken as they are iconic UK cities & amazon already owned other major UK cities. I was just registering domains I thought would be catchy and have potential use by a large brand. The only .COMs I had was my first + last name & business name..

Discovered namepros in July 2019 & decided based on the information here to get into .coms. I currently have bought about 100 .coms in the last month & plan to have a portfolio of about 10,000 in the next 6 months/year. I’ll then start a domain marketplace & sell all off lol. I’m focused on eCommerce related domains for now as I’m into eCommerce. I’ll also prebuild sites, get some revenue on them & the keyword should add some CLOUT to how much I’ll sell it for. YEET..

Hobbyist would be most accurate to describe my 23 years of activities with domain names.

I am non-dependent on domain name sales to remain active with my personal domain interests.

Acquired many early domains to use for personal hobby / interests websites as either a primary URL or as a re-direct or point.

Also acquired other names to " keep 'em " away from competitors similar websites and also for re-direct purposes.

Domains that may be available for sale are an offshoot of my early domain interests and are often related to other people's hobbies.

Also have names acquired for their potential salability.

I can not really choose any from the options offered.

Domains are for me just another form of financial investment (together with real estate, crypto, stocks and stamps) - I try to get as many good domain names with low renewals as possible into my porftolio and build some form of "personal pension domain fund" for myself. Whenever I sell some domain name, I re-invest, usually by extending other names which I am decided to keep, for many years ahead. I have approx. 1000 names, and buying new names now only from time to time, I rather prefer to extend my existing names into future.

I just turned 40 this year, and in 25 years, when I will be 65, I assume I will probably have less energy for activities I do now. So I might put my full focus on domain names when I am in that age - I also expect that in that time, new gTLDs will be mainstream :)

Have been for a few months. Needs to gather lots of knowledge and learn from experts. Only time can define my part to invest full or some time.

Thanks

What is your participation level currently in the domain industry?

Hi

just wondering where do I fit in?

cuz for me, the answer options don't really apply to the question of "one's participation level"

as one could be an active participant across other forums, boards, or write blogs, etc and it still may not be their sole source of income.

i've never been a "full time" domainer, per that description
but i have given more than 8hrs a day, thruout a day, almost 7 days a week for many years... participating in the endeavours of domaining
i put in some time, I was active, and I was busy.

and during all that time, domaining wasn't my sole means of income.

:)

imo….

In this thread/poll FullTime means that it is your PRIMARY income source or even the only one.
It doesn't matter at all: how many hours you work daily...

Really just related to money Don not participation in discussions.

I guess...

but, if there were no discussions, no opinions and no feedback, no ideas to bounce off others, no negotiations or counter offers, no sharing of knowledge, etc., then how much money would have been made, or lost?

how far would domaining go, without it?

or is it just the money that fuels the flame?

imo...

No I was not talking existentially I meant just for this poll. When you see how many people take something super serious compared to how many it's a hobby the money no big deal or non existent, as a community I think it helps you have a sense of understanding the people you associate with.

Meaning if 90% of this place was a hobbyist, then the super serious full time domainer, can't really get upset that people have low DOMAINS Wanted Thread budgets, that people are not offering quality domains for sale. You know "hey this place is mostly hobbyists" and it would work the same if it's 90% full time this is how people make their money and you are here as a hobbyist to make jokes and wonder why so many are so serious? These are just examples obviously I don't think anything will be close to 90%.

Hi Ray

that's an interesting perspective to consider and I certainly get your point in that example

though lately, some who have posted dn wanted requests.... said they have "clients" with budgets, some of which are less than $300.

to me, that's comparable to a hobbyists' budget.

maybe some of them are trying to be a broker, as a hobby.
and they are buying names for their clients.

:)

imo...
