I registered a domain name through NameCheap yesterday, but the who is record is totally different. Not because of whois protection, but it say it is from another registrar entirely please why this thanks

Try a different WHOIS platform.

  • It seems strange but as suggested above try Whois elsewhere (e.g. try Namecheap Whois to confirm it is right there). Or use one of your free daily lookups at DomainTools Whois that seem pretty current always to me.
  • It seems to me that a few registries take longer for a change information, so maybe just wait a bit.
  • If you are using Chrome, make sure that it is not just that the old one is being cached and you are not getting a fresh copy.
  • There is no chance you bought a different domain name than you think? (spelling error) :xf.wink:

I always thought that ICANN whois lookup is the most accurate and up to date. Is that not the case?

EDIT: Just did some research - seems like entering 'nslookup' command in a Windows command window gives you direct access to central registry whois. But it is not working on all system setups...(admin roles etc)

Nice tip. You can also do it from Unix command line for those into that - details here.

But I think the information is only as prompt as the update managed by the registry in the table - usually but not always instantaneous. Is this a legacy, new or country code extension domain - @Paulot ?

Bob

ps this description of how Whois works is well done.

Caching is heavily used in the internet from dns to page elements and databases. Always bear in mind this fact when you see old or false info on websites. Allow sometime for the cache gets expired or try another alternative that shows the same info.
