So News Corp is looking to start a news aggregation service that will be both a website and a mobile app. They say they are doing this to address concerns publishers have with regards to Google and Facebook. The Wall Street Journal published an article News Corp is developing a news-aggregation service meant to address concerns that Alphabet Inc.’s Google News and other digital platforms … [Read more...]

I think it's a really, really UGLY domain name. Which is why they paid only 2 grand for it. The only thing I would suggest News Corp do with this domain, would be to use this as a trial run until they have perfected their product, and then to announce their product on a premium domain name. I cannot imagine this domain would ever sell, in a thousand years.

What a shit name. I wouldn't ever think of regging that. Huge Domains just gobbles up anything they think will sell. I'm sure a bot picked it up with no human involvement.

Huge Domains business plan

1. Reg everything in sight
2. Hope it sells
3. Rinse and Repeat

Instead of knewz, I would recommend them to get nice new gTLD name express.news, which is clear, short, meaningful, and I sell it pretty cheaply btw - they can afford it :)

The problem they face is so simple

Google and Facebook have taken the media's advertising dollars from under their noses and are redistributing those advertising dollars to content creators via Facebook and Google owned websites and the media don't like it because it makes them look stupid so they now try and tell the public that they are first all the time which the public could care less whose first or not

The media had to try to get on Google homepage but they will never be first on Google homepage because appear second at best below Google search engine search bar and the papers have to pay Google to compete amongst themselves to be first listing below Google search engine

But if a person does see their listing etc they simply type the area or the place or the celebrity name in to Facebook Google and twitter search engine and ignore the top button because generally is the media companies and click on latest button instead and usually one of facebooks 2.5 billion users with a smartphone the a pic and tell rest of the world comment on it some bod on a smartphone is first and the rest of the world comment on it

That's how socialmedia works and Facebook and Google pick up the advertising dollars for content their users create

And the media can't stand that because the media see these advertising dollars as theirs but those days are long long gone and can never cone back

Because the Internet is based on trust

And no one trusts the media or journos

The advertising dollars concept works but only if the public trust the organisation behind the website which is why the future of the media looks bleak

The strategy here is simple...

News Corp has been negotiating on some domains but everyone is holding out for big money in the hundreds of thousands for anything decent.

Newscorp spends a couple of grand to buy a shit domain and now everyone else thinks they lost a payday. Now anyone that was negotiating with newscorp calls them up and drops their price saying you can do better I will sweeten the pot.

Guaranteed News Corp will save more than the 2k they spent buying the crap domain.

Its all a ruse I tell you.... watch out for the real deal to come.

PS. Now if they really go into it with Knewz.com then they deserve what they get, newspaper sites have been making mistakes for the last ten years so why stop now.

In this case they are clearly targeting readers who cannot spell.

I don't like gLTD, they are much less instinctive than typing .com and they are too many (therefore impossible to remember all). So I'd still take a .com
Got it, much easier to remember knewz.com then express.news ... express.news is new gTLD and just impossible to remember for you :)

Express.news is a great name. Yet, it is almost a prerequisite for a startup of a large company to have its .com

Because it is not there job to create awareness. And if someone sees "express.news" they might not even realize it is a domain name.

So, if I am going to invest $1MM into a news project, I am not going to start it at .news. I might buy it as a hack, if I decided to go with word+news.com, but not standalone.

Put it this way: how many popular websites do you know with .news URL?

It might be fine for a mid $xx,xxx project, though.

Thanks for the compliment about express.news @Recons.Com - your Lnews.com is also nice!

All the rest of the discussion would be just usual discussion between 2 domain investors holding different assets - you .com, me new gTLDs, happened here 1000x times before - I think we should not paternalize companies what is better for them, they have their own brains, ideas, eyes, and can freely choose for themselves. They can choose nice .com or new gTLDs, it is all here...but the domain should be nice, imo. Trying to belittle name like express.news as "fine for $xx,xxx project" will not help you to sell your Lnews.com - it can sell regardless, it is a good name :)

Express is a trademark of a rival news group in the UK

Sure, but the domain name is express.news, not expressnews / co.uk or expressnews / uk.
That is the beauty of new gTLDs, they are not limited to certain geo location or country, as ccTLDs, they are trully international.

Express News is a common semantic string in English language. It is the same as if someone trademarked common string "unhappy love" in USA, someone else in UK, someone else in Germany and someone else in Denmark...it does not mean 5th company can not operate domain name Unhappy.Love. "Express News" is the same as "Unhappy Love" in this aspect, those are both common and frequently used expressions in English language :)

I'd never belittle express.news, seriously. I like that name. As I said, it is probably top 50 .news name.

I'd start a project on that, just I would on LNews. But, if I had budget of $1MM, I'd allocate around 10% of that to go for something else, that is all I am saying. And, also, that they already might have prerequisite to look for .com. Do you know of any project by a major telecom company that is not in .com, .org or cctld?

new gtlds don't compete with my names, period. If anything, they help sell them at higher price, when a startup realizes how much educating of its customers, partners etc. is involved.
