I thought I should let everyone know that a domain name was taken from my GoDaddy account today, by GoDaddy. The domain was fully in my account and I still have the transfer confirmation from GoDaddy.

What tipped me off is that earlier today, they simply sent me an email saying that "I" cancelled the domain registration. I knew I had not, so I called. After a long hold while they "researched", they explained that the domain was a stolen domain and that they repossessed it.

GoDaddy provided little additional information. The rep did say that the domain would be returned to it's rightful owner or if not, be sold at some point (can you believe that).

I am shocked that this happened. The domain is gxog (dot) com. I bought it here on NP a few days ago. I paid for it on Dan.com (Undeveloped), and the seller was @proton1 .

I have reached out to the seller but haven't heard back yet. The seller is currently selling another 4L domain here. @Eric Lyon , you might want to take a look.

Anyway, hopefully I will recover the funds from Dan.com or Paypal.

@Joe Styler if there is anything you can do to help or take a look, it would be great.

I don't know how GoDaddy was the registrar, then all of a sudden decided to repossess the domain I just bought. Then refer me back to Dan.com. All with no real explanation.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Yes, there are scammers even here in the forum. Have to be super careful.

Yes, there are scammers even here in the forum. Have to be super careful.
We dedicate significant amounts of time and resources to rid the forum of all scammers, and that's why even though this is a free community, we have very few scam reports given our size. Scams are very rare on NamePros and only happen a handful of times a year, which is remarkable given our size. Safety is a top priority at NamePros, but there is no substitute for due diligence and protecting yourself in all ways possible.

Requiring payment through cryptocurrency (e.g., Bitcoin) and deals that are "too good to be true" are major red flags. It's worth reporting those to us before proceeding so that we can do a quick check to see if we notice anything concerning.

Sorry about that @Silentptnr . Sometimes we cant be too careful. I see a lot of auctions going on created by members with accounts less than 30 days of membership . . .

I put a bid on a domain some days ago and didnt even check the owner until today. The domain is registered at directnic and it is less than 60 days, apparently there is no way I can gain ownership supposedly I had paid. It would have been a case of money going down the drain. Needless to say the auction was created by an account less than a month membership on namepros. I contacted the owner and told him to explain to him how I will gain ownership, but no reply as expected
At NamePros, buyers and sellers get to decide whether they want to do business with new members. The risk is higher with new members, and everyone has the option of not doing deals with them. If you do decide to do a deal with a new member, then please understand that you need to be extra careful and do additional due diligence.

We hope that helps.

Was godaddy involved with the original theft?

What right would they have to remove one of your domains?
Now that would be especially so if the previous theft was at a different registrar.

Assuming you have as many domains as I do with godaddy that does become a bit worrying because if someone claims theft godaddy comes in and removes it without engaging the person who has the domain in their account.

Proper thing to have happened would have been to lock the domain and then engage all parties thereoff.
@Silentptnr Removal without getting your side of the coin is a bit premature in my opinion.

Anyways, as mentioned numerous times here, it is always a lesson and we should always take the tradescore into consideration. The thing is that in this case the trade score is actually not bad, with a fairly long history.

No, actually GoDaddy was really secretive about it. They didn't even call me directly. Even though they call me regularly with upsells. It was a really bad experience.

I used to have hundreds of domains with gd but what @Silentptnr says is one of the reasons I no longer keep domains there. No communication on a critical situation with him but phone buddies on the upsells.
I haven’t personally had them pull this stunt with me but I have seen it happen too many times to long time reputable members here. Just taking the name away. Ugh!

@Silentptnr who is responsible for the amount paid? Dan? Can they recover from the sellers ac?

There must be a resolution right? They can just take away the domain with no response I feel.

Somehow the seller had it listed on Dan but I had a feeling, so I asked for push first, then i would pay through Dan. He pushed it at GD, so I paid at Dan. Dan called me and asked me to confirm in writing that I had already received the domain, so they could release funds to seller. I did it.

Thought it was a successful transaction. Then Gd came from nowhere, took the domain. And then simply told me the domain was repossessed. All the while, they had been the registrar.

My thoughts are, the person that sold me the domain hadn't paid for it properly/legally. I think somehow, the push was the mechanism that triggered the repo. I really dont know for sure.

What bugged me was that GD actually said that if they could not return the domain to the rightful owner, they would sell it.

They really treated me like I did something wrong. It was horrible.

@Joe Styler has never even chimed in. Disgraceful really.

I didn't/dont have time to chase $100 so till now it's a loss.

Sorry that happened to you. This has given me the push I need...gonna spend a hour or so this weekend and find what they did to me many years ago re: taking a name without offering a reason.

I look at it like a big bag of delicious popcorn. One bad kernel isn't going to ruin my enjoyment.

Just wish GD had been more open, professional and understanding.

Slowly moving my names away from GD.

This is the same email they send when you bid on an expired auction, win the name and then it gets renewed by the original owner. They send the "you've cancelled your order/domain" email. Its shocking that such a big player would have such below par methods of correspondence.

I am sorry to hear this happened to you. The legal department is the one who repossesses the domains in most cases. They do not call people. They want everything in writing. There are a few reasons they would repossess the domain name. The most probable is that the domain was not paid for originally. I dont want to detail the scam here and let others in on the way to do it. I'll pm you more of an explanation. The other things that could trigger this is a court or other body with legal jurisdiction that orders the domain be moved.

Even if details could not be given to the person who had the domain taken away, it seems to me @Joe Styler that a clear notification that at the very least gives the category of the situation is owed to the person who held it, @Silentptnr in this case. It is good that now you are privately telling him, but it should be done automatically.

That is, saying something like the following (based on your possibilities) should be given to the domain holder who has now lost it at the time it was taken and automatically:
  • "The domain name had to be removed from your account since we were given a court order requiring us to move the domain name." or
  • "This domain name was not paid for on a previous transaction at GoDaddy and therefore we believe it is our right to recover the domain name."
  • etc.
As part of due process the owner has a right to know the situation so they can decide if there is a reason to appeal it or consider legal or consumer action. By simply saying it was removed from your account, there is zero transparency.

Just my opinion. I really hope you get compensated in some way, @Silentptnr.

Bob

Some things are bigger than all of us.
Anything involving legal usually means silence, unless pressed they will say as little as possible.

GD is "reposessing" names because previous owner owes them money, nothing else. Nothing to do with stolen domain or any "legal" issue. They are in charge of this. Judge, jury and executioner.
It has already been discussed on NP - they are taking domains from new owner's account because of THEIR problems with other client past payment. Been there, nightmare.

Yes, now that you mention it, I do remember another thread that discussed how GoDaddy is not properly collecting payments or something of that nature.

Yes, chargebacks and other fraud from previous owner, but this is not the way to deal with it. Highly unethical at the very least.
