What would happen to the domain name industry if the the US economy began to start crashing?

I think domain sales would go up as people would take their money out of the US markets, and have to buy online assets that are safer than what they are holding, and thats cryptos, domains, other currency, etc...

Is that an accuracy thought process, and do you think .com domains will go from gold standard to diamond standard, because all the businesses that failed (Doesnt USA have the most .com's registered?) now have useless websites, so as a buyer you can get that .com much easier than now, so you have no reason to get a random extension that you know is weak against .com's.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
It'll go through a trough, only to be followed by corporate profits increase, government royalties and tax receipts improve the government budget, the improved budget triggering tax cuts, and higher commodity prices spark increased capital expenditure. These episodes also often coincide with a rising Australian dollar and wage growth. China and global markets will be observed before any action

Nothing special other than people looking to preserve wealth

Domain retail prices in aggregate roughly track the NASDAQ. Both nose dived when the internet bubble burst (2000) and again due to the 2007-08 global financial crisis. Neither event upset TLD hierarchy. Yes good buying opportunities arise out of the ashes.

During the last collapse in 2008 I picked up thousands of very good names for next to nothing. Domainers start dropping lower value names to trim their portfolios. Higher value names will always be held onto but names that are worth around $2,500 to end users drop like flies.

I think with this stronger than usual bull market, we will see a slight decline, just so it stabilizes, but I don't see a crash. With that said, I think domaining and investing in domaining is an independent entity to the stock market. Its more like agriculture and the futures market imo.

Sales that matter are to end users. These would go down if economy declined. At same time, Purchasing opportunities for domainers would increase.

Your question seems rhetorical.

You mean if the dollar hyperinflation to the point of worthless and the world scrambles to find currency to replace it? People would buy anything they could, a lot of idle dollars sitting around and not much 'things of value' to buy, so domains would be one option, probably at least get the attention of more people of something that can be used as a 'store of value'.

A shift, from once currency to another is like stomping on a swarm of roaches, they'll go everywhere at first, but they'll congregate again someplace else in a while.

End user sales are a tiny fraction of domain sales. Most domains are sold between domainers. So, wealthier domainers would buy up the vast majority of domains as their wealth would allow them to weather the financial storm longer than the average domainer who would be forced to sell many of their best names.
