I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

Looks like it’s back now

I was on there a couple of hours ago and it was working fine but getting an error now...

Thanks, and at least I know it hasn't been DOA for that long.

Kinda inconvenient for me, as I'd allocated Sunday afternoon to clear up some domain renewal/contact/bookkeeping work.

Yep, it was back, but when I hit "login" it crashed again.

I think I'll leave it for a few hours, as I don't want to lose any of my work or have it crash during a transfer, etc.

Definitely leave it alone, as I was able to login, but when I clicked on my domains, it crashed again.

They definitely have some work to do before I'd rate it safe to work on.

Yeah...Can login and access areas all but “my domains”... They will have it back soon I would expect..they’re pretty good about staying on top of things

Damn, sold a domain but NamesPro.ca seems to be DOA. I also wanted to renew a domain, but it looks like I'm hooped on both ends. :xf.frown:

Any idea how long this outage has been going on for, as I don't think I've accessed the site in a week or more.

I don't like to use them, too much manual processing. I like a registrar where everything is automated 24/7.

That can also be viewed as a positive, because if someone "hacks" you, they're going to get nowhere with NamesPro.

And these days, it doesn't take much to social engineer a CSR into giving access to your email or even a registrar account. No one "hacks" citizens anymore, it's just a pile of kids sitting in a call center in Africa, cold-calling ISPs, using customer names and addresses from a list.

I use 2 factor at godaddy... plus I have a random code via an authentication app.... good luck anyone hacking that.

I did business with a few members here and it took forever to get a transfer code from namespro. With godaddy I get that in seconds. The one deal I made it literally took all weekend and had that been a real sale instead of a member to member sale it could have wrecked the deal.

Sorry but I am not a fan of namespro

If memory serves me correctly I think the one member was @nafti and I thought it was a one off. Then second deal it was the same thing, took a number of days over the weekend to get a simple transfer code.

2-factor is nothing, and it's simple to "bad actor" their way into a new SIM card and suddenly your phone number no longer works. Same with the app, since they now have access to your phone.

All these safeguards are only as good as the CSR on the other end of the phone line, and the vast majority are untrained, unmotivated, and may even be located in 3rd-world countries themselves.

There is no solution but eternal vigilance.

Believe me, I know exactly what you mean, as not only can they take a long while, they also ask questions and assume you're transferring out to save money.

Communications should be more professional, with a Transfer Code, a Thank You, and that's it.

I was just stating that sometimes in the current environment of hackers stealing everything in a matter of minutes, the slow, old school way does have its charms.

I've had no problems with NamesPro today. I've been changing nameservers and messing around on and off all day. Weird.

It was definitely offline from 5-6 PM EST or so. I got a support reply about it.

It gave a server error with a link to a page outlining a missing XYZ from a program update. So their host updated something, which caused an incompatibility, to which NamesPro then cleared up.

There is no way into my authenticator app, it generates a new code every minute.

Big namespro fan for many years and never had any issues getting Auth codes or prompt service and they have NEVER asked me why I am transferring a name away.

Add me to the list of satisfied Namespro customers. Never an issue and the response times to tickets has always been 5 minutes or less...even on weekends

Unless it's a physical dongle or device, there is always a way in. GoDaddy uses Google Authenticator App and Authy for mobile phones, and once the scammers gain SIM access to your phone (and you're totally locked out), it's simple to gain access to email, Apple/Google accounts, and all your existing apps.

You could use 10-factor authentication, but if 9 of the steps involve your phone, then it's still essentially 2-factor. To be absolutely safe, use a physical dongle or setup a second phone +SIM just for authentication (and never give out the number). A dedicated device is the key.

As cell companies will tell you, phones were never intended to be used as security devices, and their customer service processes leave people wide open to social engineering hacks.

I may sound paranoid, but it happened to me once and it's scary as sheet how easy it was to social engineer these morons. My ISP and Cell companies were giving it away like candy.

Even if my phone is lost you cannot get into my authenticator without my password, it is impossible to hack.

$1000 unsolicited offer in US funds for a name I have owned for 6 weeks, from a Quebec marketing firm.
In my response I ask if he is purchasing for himself or a 3rd party. His response "KEEP IT".

I politely and purposely used the English spelling of his name and said my goodbyes.

The French.

Are you absolutely sure he was not responding that his plan was to keep it for his own use, thereby answering your question?

It wasn’t me on this occasion @MapleDots.

I haven’t had an issue with Namespro yet and I have been with them over 10 years. I agree that other places are better like Godaddy and Rebel for getting an authorization code but Namespro sends me the code within 2-3 hours normally.

What I normally do is if I know I am close to a sale, i will email Namespro and ask for the auth code. If the sale falls through then no harm no foul. But I do agree that GoDaddy’s system is better for sure.

Even if my phone is lost you cannot get into my authenticator without my password, it is impossible to hack.

It depends on when you notice the intrusion, as the hacker just needs access to the email used to create the account in order to disable 2-factor authentication entirely or recover the key - there are instructions online. It's not easy, but never say never, because it has been done.

They can also run all kinds of tricks to keep you out of the system while they run through their intrusion list - that's the worst part, you're trying to get back in, while they're actively trying to keep you out. Like on that link I posted, the guy finally got his new SIM activated, and a few minutes later the hacker has called back his cell provider and had stolen it again. :shifty:

Hackers may not end up getting anything (as in my case, I caught them early) but due to moron CSRs who will robotically and repeatedly give away your accounts, they can make your life a living hell.

All these safeguards are like a top home alarm system, they're designed to keep away 99% of burglars, but even pro systems won't keep away the top 1% if they're properly motivated. Add in morons at the call desk giving away your accounts and SIM cards like candy and you've got a system ripe for 3rd-world abuse.

Yes, and in his subsequent reply to "Shove it up your ass!" he was referring to a new enema that one of his clients had just developed. :xf.grin:

Not sure about anything really. The guy disappeared. On the day he made his offer there were multiple visits from multiple IP addresses. Now nothing.

I wasn't going to sell it for that price anyway.

It’s been a really quiet summer for me as for inquiries. Maybe everyone is away on vacation! :)

I think I’ve only had 3 inquires since the beginning of June. I always find the summer months slower. Anyone else?

Barely 8,000 .CA domains this week on the TBR, but there are a few interesting LLLs to keep things buzzing.
