Pardon if this was previously discussed, but Verisign had to get the US govt to sign off potentially raising .com prices (w icann approval) by 7% per year: https://domainnamewire.com/2018/11/01/breaking-u-s-gov-grants-verisign-com-price-hikes/. So I guess there was at least some oversight here. Not sure this applies to other extensions?
Then, icann lifted .org price caps allowing the registry to charge what they want: https://domainnamewire.com/2019/06/30/domain-overseer-lifts-all-price-caps-on-org-domain-names/
How about the new tlds? I understand that various registry operators have the incentive to keep prices reasonable for more adoption and growth. But hypothetically, do they have full rights to raise prices as they wish? Imagine investing a bunch of money in a domain only to find out renewal prices could be hiked up astronomically? It's like buying a house and deciding it's not worth it after insane property tax hikes.
What are your thoughts on this problem?
