.uk .UK domain name release

Is anyone registering .UK domains? They opened registration for anyone and there's a bunch of great one-word domains up for grabs. I haven't heard much about this extension on this forum and wanted to know all of your take.

UK residents already owning the .CO.UK extension received first dibs of its equivalent but now it's open registration. These .UK names seems to be much more better and catchy than .co.uk, but we'll see how things go. I suppose it's still too early to say.

There's still many great domains up for grab.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

What do you guys think of talentconnect/uk. The US, com and net and co extensions have all been developed into a website
A single website for all of them, or separate companies? You may be opening yourself to TM issues if all owned by 1 company. You could be seen as domain squatting.

No need to scare the guy too much.

I checked and 'talentconnect' was a registered US TM registered by the owners of the .COM, but it has since expired. They don't own the .NET or the .CO, they are different. Whilst issues are not outside of the realms of possibility, cause they may have established common law rights in it, but then they might not too. Just the existence of another (the .CO) as an established entity is enough to fend off a UDRP as long as you haven't approached them directly and don't infringe their registered or common law rights.

I'm not scaring anybody, I am being realistic and note the use of the word "may" in my OP..

The problem with land rushes of this type in ccTLDs is that domainers with little or no experience of ccTLDs will use dotCOM rules to register what they think are valuable domain names. Some may be valuable over time. The .UK launch is far more complicated than an ordinary ccTLD land rush because the competition isn't from .COM and the gTLDs but rather from within the ccTLD itself.

What will happen with .UK, for the moment, is the same thing that happened with .COM and .CO. Non-domainers in the target market will automatically correct the .UK to .co.uk and the .UK site will, initially, lose traffic to the .co.uk version. (This is what happened with Overstock and o.co.)

There is another effect in strong ccTLDs that causes problems for domaining with generic keyword domains. That is the identification of the people in the ccTLD country with "their" ccTLD. The extension becomes less important than other keywords in a domain that put the domain name in context. Thus while pizza might be a good generic term, pizza+london might be more relevant to ordinary people. Outside the 30K or so truly generic and high value keywords, registration patterns in ccTLDs tend to get very complex. These patterns also exist in .COM in the registrations associated with each country but becaause .COM is a large TLD, it is hard for domainers to see these patterns in about 141 million registrations.

The big winners, initially, will be those in the UK market and who know the Nominet system inside out. Despite the low numbers of sales on some non-UK reporting sites, the .UK ccTLD market is quite active. After the initial burst of registrations, the most important pattern will emerge over November 2019 to February 2020. This is when the normal registration rates for .UK will kick in as the .UK emerges from the traditional land rush period (first six months or so of general availability). The best that .UK can hope for is that it is over 15% of .co.uk new registrations per month. This is because the momentum in the ccTLD will still be with .co.uk registrations for the immediate future. The burst of new registrations from the land rush is exceptional but it plays a small part in establishing the resale value of .UK domain names. It could take as long as five years before the .UK values stabilise. As an indication of what happens when a ccTLD is launched badly, there is an offer on .EU domain names on some registrars for 1 Euro for the first year (approximately and 85% discount) because the .EU ccTLD is losing registrations. Hopefully the .UK won't end up like the .EU.

I felt like that, but it's not looking very promising is it with big corporations failing to even bother to reg them.

Nissan, Spar, Umbro to name a few. Also new brands like Voxi that could probably get away with the switch didn't get their name. Other random ones that I noticed are WD40, Honeywell and probably many more.
We can add unitedutilities.uk to that list.

Looks like it was caught by Cyntra (Nominet tag/registrar). Not necessarily Godaddy. Just make sure that it is a genuine Godaddy e-mail.

i like film dotuk but cant afford the nearly 2k, but tbf that is still cheap.
I note the co.uk version redirects to ITV. Wonder if they would consider selling the co.uk haha

yes and Hastings will DRS it lol
I sincerely hope that's not the case. Their trademark is a figurative one on "insure.co.uk - insurance reinvented". In UDRP they would really struggle, I hope that DRS isn't that loose :dead:
