Maybe your whois data is not up to date
What does it shows on the registrar's whois?

Try another whois site.

It's possible for a domain to fall betwen the chairs at the local registrar level when a glitch in porcessing of payment, registration or renewal occurs. In this case a domain will be earmarked for ordered operations but get stuck, with atask never being accomplished. When this happens, a record may even show for a domain a busy status appearing unavailable for registration, for example, but at the same time, without having proper whois records in place.

I should also add that the 'updated date' may refer to the domain being 'on-hold' for various reasons (eg. what namelancer said or due to legal reasons etc.)

That actually happens more than people realize. The domain expires but does not drop for some time. It all depends on the TLD and may also depend on the registrar. Once you look into nTLDs and ccTLDs, it gets really complex and there may not be a standard period that folks have come to experience with .com registrations.

It could be legal proceedings against a name so it's put on hold.

I've seen domains flat out delete from the registry way before their expiry date was due. Happened with a potential 5 fig domain I hand registered in January.

Someone helped have a look and it appear that the whois sites I used were not giving accurate results.

The domain name had been renewed till next year. still strange lol
