There is a "Libra Group" that owns the "libra.com". Will it conflict with Facebook trademark ?

Facebook officially confirms that its cryptocurrency will be called "Libra" :
https://techcrunch.com/2019/06/18/facebook-libra/
They also trademarked this word.

However, I found out that the domain name "libra.com" belongs to the "Libra Group" that deals with a diversity of business like shipping, hotels, aviation, etc.

Will it create some conflict with Facebook trademark for β€œLibra” ?

The answer is NO or Nope :xf.smile:
Because is not in conflict with what do Libra .com & crypto Libra from FaceBook & second i think Libra .com is reg. as trademark before this type of crypto ......It's like say Calibra group that manage Libra crypto create conflict with 'Calibra' car model from automaker Opel

What about those domainers that registered domain names with the "Libra" word as part of their domain names ?

I'm wondering about this too. Is it ok to register domains with the term Libra in it?
I know Libra is a birth sign and already an established term...so is it more about the use...rather than the term?

And does the term "Global coin" have value still?

The facebook trademark would apply within the CRYPTO vertical, they own the .ORG of it already, just like all other foundation names are mostly on the ORG gtld.

Also all excellent LIBRA names are already gone. This is what I managed to grab (all king):
LibraCx
Libra777
LibraKrypto
LibraKasino

Same thing ..if it's proved in a panel that have another activity (other then crypto) or they not produce financial/image damage or prove that not make cybersquatting or in bad faith - no problem at all
IMO

So you can register Libra related names, but not with the word crypto accompanying it?

so names like libramarket etc would be fine.

Basic yes but not in bad faith
If you sell products like auto parts or in food industry or a advertising company yes is possible
...it's a little trick :xf.smile:

2 year's ago reg. LadyGaga.info - no chance to sell it....received instantly mail from attorney house that represent Lady Gaga to transfer domain to them
"P.S. not intend to ask money from Ms. Stefani Germanotta for LadyGaga.info not even $ 16 i pay at backorder because i respect the artist in generally.
But if you ask me nice i will give you the domain to Ms. Stefani Germanotta if Miss Lady Gaga will write to me a nice & official email
." Quote from email

Need 3 ( the lawyer ) to answer me - because of my request LOL

"We appreciate your willingness to transfer the <ladygaga .info> domain to our client. We hope you understand that our client is unable to write to you personally, but we trust that you understand that our client appreciates your respect for her. "

But also have Legoo.top - received also mail from attorney house that represent Lego - my answer was to "go to walk the bear"

Libra is a common zodiac sign. Facebook doesn't own the Zodiac calendar. The answer is yes, you can have Libra domains, as long as they aren't trying to be Facebook's.

Libra is controlled by the Libra Association. Facebook is only a fraction of the Libra Association.

Facebook owns a crypto wallet that will exchange Libra, it will be called Calibra. Others are allowed to create Libra Wallets as well, as it's open source.

But if it is allowed to use a trademarked word as part of a domain name in a business that is quite unrelated to Facebook, how do you explain that, in 2010, Facebook sued and successfully shut down a startup TRAVEL WEBSITE called Placebook -and- in 2011, Facebook also sued a TEACHER-AND-STUDENT SITE called Teachbook ?

( Facebook has a registered trademark For The Word β€œBOOK” ).

Another question is: Can a domain seller be responsible for how a buyer will use the domain name in the future ?

Moral ..yes can be responsible the seller but is a debate story

I don't know the case of Placebook but i think they don't have a good lawyer (first rule in battle of companies) . In this type of case they are a lot of factors (country , language , general word etc..) , basic is a 50% - 50% chance that complainant win or respondent win.

Libra is a generic term as others have pointed out. It is very popular because of that when it comes to branding.

Libra as far as the crypto goes is a secondary meaning. It would be only protected as a TM in that narrow case.
