There is a domain buyer posting on namepros...

When I sent him list of domains...he replied back with interest but subject to buying appraisal from his given link website before he buys the domain

This seems doubtful and fake. ..dont pay anything for appraisals since this seems doubtful.

BEWARE ..a advice from a fellow domainer.

I knew it was him. I can't believe the community haven't done anything to stop this guy, he has been around forever. I didn't even bother to send him any names, because my gut feeling has always been off with this guy.

How about deleting the entire account, and monitor certain parts of the forum better? Some bells should ring, when a random guy asks for new gTLDs with what seems to be an unlimited budget.

happened last month - he requested names and sent a message back pointing me in the direction of Brands International.....

There was a thread on it, but I can't find it......

Yes, indeed. If I remember correctly, I did in fact send him some names over a month ago. He replied he was not interested, but suggested me to head over to Brands / International for any given reason.

I suspect he only targets new and uneducated members with his appraisals then. Because any seasoned domainer would put him to rest.

I never heard of him before, but I saw the post earlier and thought something was fishy about it.
New gtlds, don't care about renewal feels, can pay up to 3k, and somehow have zero ratings and no way message but to go off the platform and do it privately.

All these things doesn't guarantee it's a scam, but when doing due diligence, these things carry a certain smell. And was he asking for appraisals and promoting brands.international?

So someone should spend $100 to $500 on a appraisal for a new GTLD?
With no guarantee of you buying?

You should have an idea on what names are valuable before you make requests, because a domainer will not spend up to $500 for an appraisal to submit their name for you to consider buying it.

And build your reputation: You said one name purchased? So ask that buyer to write you a positive review here on namepros?

The Mod team sadly won't do anything if there are no "rules" violation

so from what I see in the request thread is that Johnnie is asking for names, you send an email and get a reply from Marek at Brand International requesting you go to his appraisal page and pay before purchase?

I would like to know if these are the same person, working together or has lolwarrior been hacked?

rofl, some community members and moderators are busy defending this guy, would they care? I'm doubtful. They are moralists, deleting every foul words here and there is enough to them and pretend everything is at peace and in harmony and Utopia is near.

Oldest trick in the book.

Remember, if you are SELLING an item and you get response telling you to BUY something in order for a sale to go through, RUN. Far away.

These people are not looking to help you, they are trying to SELL you something.

You are right, It is old trick. I have blocked many such people even many directly approached through email. Beware everyone they also ask to provide brokerage service.

Could those of you who are claiming @johnnie018 is running an appraisal scam please post and quote his EXACT messages (copy/paste only .. do not paraphrase, as the exact words he used are important).

*IF* indeed he is specifically requiring a paid appraisal before considering a purchase, then this is what is known as an "Appraisal Scam" .. it has been going on in the domain industry for years by unethical people.

Basically a fake domain broker approaches you saying they have a buyer for your domain. But that the buyer requires an appraisal certificate for their bank or company. They then give you the choice of 2-3 appraisal services usually owned by them (sometimes they put in one that isn't owned by them to make it look legit, but theirs are always less expensive so you'll be most likely to go to them).

I'm not usually one to rush to judgement without seeing the exact words of the infraction, but given that @johnnie018 pretty much admitted it, I'd say action needs to be taken, or if there is a loophole in the rules which allows a buyer to request the seller pay for an appraisal, then that loophole needs to be closed (although it seems vaguely covered in the rules I listed below.

I need appraisal before buy, CEO policy. This is appraisal site who chose to use because so detail valuation.

As I mainly rely on common-sense and I haven't read all the NP rules top to bottom, with a quick search I'd think the following 2 rules could easily be applied.

3.1. Advertising of any kind is only permitted in a Marketplace or General Advertising sections or by official advertisers where applicable. Unsolicited offers and advertising are never permitted in replies or direct messages.

6.1.7. Sellers are responsible for paying all transaction fees except those the buyer could have avoided or the buyer chooses to pay. Sellers should take fees into consideration when choosing sale prices or starting bids. Multiple sale prices and multiple starting bids may be set based on specific criteria. Learn why. No hidden fees may be assessed on a deal or sales listing by either party.

More importantly: I'd think this sort of bait and switch, with a "recommended/suggested" paid service (appraisal / brokerage) might be better off to be in the rules considering it's prevalence in the industry and the significant damage it can do to newcomers. Maybe take the sentence I highlighted for 6.1.7 and make it a separate point with a bit more detail that includes a rule against the requirement for a seller to pay for appraisals and brokerage services in order for a possible deal to proceed.
