Im curious if any of you have sold a brandable domain to a drug company for a new drugs name?

Since so many drugs are made up and branadable i was curious about domains matching the drug or visa versa

Has a drug company named their drug after the domain?

if so can you reveal the name?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I think there are going to be some great success stories in that category.

I recently sold the domain Allira.com for $5,000 -- it was a hand-reg in 2011. It was supposedly a guy buying it for his girlfriend. I am a sucker for a good story. The buyer paid for the privilege to be an Epik client.

That being said, I surely thought Allira would be a fine pharmaceutical brand, or cosmetic procedure, i.e. it sounds a whole lot better than Botox or Juvederm.

It does make one wonder if there are capable branding experts working at big pharma since they seem pretty consistent at choosing terrible brand names..... :)

selling direct to the big pharma would be very tough im sure

if any brokers out there with some tips who do that would be cool

btw Allira is a great drug name !

There are considerable regulatory requirements to naming new drugs. I looked into this possibility some time ago, because yes, there were such weird names being chosen, and I felt sure that many of us could offer far better brand choices. My sisters - one an RN, one an MD - set me straight.

At least for US products, names of drugs have to pass many hurdles, and they're extensive. Many of the requirements are to try to keep names from being confused with other similar names.

I found out even small things like how the name looks when written in cursive matters.

I believe it.

It is entirely possible that the name of the game is an emotional sale -- using images with a call to action to ask your doctor or pharmacist. A website would tend to have information, including disclosure side effects. And if people actually read that stuff, they would probably avoid most of it. :)

So, I think big pharma is probably being rational. Where this could change is if more drugs went not just over the counter, but direct to consumer. If someone is a diabetic and needs to be on metformin or insulin, that is a recurring annuity just like Dollar Shave Club.

The day just might be coming where big pharma can then also stop the fake pill problem, and just fill prescriptions directly to the consumer. If they can legalize weed, they can legalize metformin. This will also be a way for them to rival the fast-growing supplement business, which pharma actually hates.

Anyway, don't give up on the direct sale strategy. The day is not all that far. Pharma has high value to weight, and low perishability. It is such an obvious candidate for direct to consumer. Tamper-proof packaging could even make it possible to deliver narcotics to people who should not be driving.

Well where I travel, no wasting $100 and waiting for overbooked late an hour appt to see a Dr. for 10 minutes to write a prescription. The Pharmacist handles the sales and diagnosis as long as it's simple.

ICYMI, Telemedicine is about to go mainstream. It is a game-changer. My wife is a doctor -- they just started doing telemedicine this month at her practice. You have laboratories around the world that do blood draws and process samples for diagnostic tests. The consultation can be done remotely if people prefer it for those who don't really want to commute, wait in a waiting room, etc.

Telemedicine is going to be huge.........like you say a game changer and huge benefits for those around the world.

Also telesurgery (remote surgery) is going to be big......

Waiting rooms are the worst being around sneezing, sniffling contagious people where you can acquire something unrelated too, lol.

That telemedicine for sure will be great for some complex things like remote surgery imaging or real time observation and super expert niche specialists reviewing complicated multiple test results as second opinions across the country.

But really say you go in for a routine affliction like strep throat, there is no need to waste $100 to be given a prescription. Then the Dr. wants to make another $100. and sets a future appt to force you to come back in 90 days or 6 months “just because” is a racket, imo. Where I travel the pharmacies used to treat much drugs if pain killers that are classed as prescription are as OTC, until recently changes the insanity of the US imposing their rules on them.

Drug companies are very careful at choosing names for their products because if they choose a name that closely sounds or looks like another drug they could be hit for a large lawsuit. Imagine being prescribed a drug for acne but the pharmacy fucks up and gives you a cancer drug instead. This is why drug names are so terrible sometimes because they want to be crystal clear with their naming. Pharmaceutical companies have deep pockets and use naming companies that specialize in only naming drugs. There is very stringent criteria for naming drugs. Link below is a good article about it.
