Hello.

This is not a thread asking how accurate / reliable the tool is.

I received an email from GoDaddy last night titled "save 20% on ...com", relating to a domain name I had entered into their Appraisal tool 1-2 days earlier.

Email contained the following:

"Don't miss out on ...com.
Hey, stuff happens - we we held on to your domain for you".

I've checked the availability with my usual registrar and it says it's "available for purchase".

I checked a whole lot of domain names in GoDaddy's appraisal tool two days ago, including two keyword coms I am sure were available two days ago, but strangely enough when I checked again last night, they were not available. I might have got the TLD wrong when I wrote it in my spreadsheet, but it makes me suspicious.

I'm not sure whether a registrar can legally poach domain names entered into their search fields?

Any thoughts or similar experiences on this?

I haven’t experienced that specifically, but I did experience something today that is really bothering me, and I don’t know how it is going to end. I found a really good one word .cc that expired today, and it was available as a cheap BIN at Godaddy. I bought it. I have the receipt, but they haven’t transferred the domain. To make matters worse, it’s listed at Afternic for high $xxx. I’m not sure what’s going on, but I am very suspicious. And I did run it through their appraisal before buying it.

Are you inside the US and are you covered by consumer trade law?

I am. And I have a chat transcript where they acknowledged that I purchased the domain, but they say it takes 20 days to transfer. Does that sound right? I feel like I got cheated.

Or maybe the person that listed it at Afternic doesn’t realize it expired?

I'm not sure. Surely if you have a receipt and chat transcript, you should be okay. GoDaddy is a big organisation and I am assume would not want negative publicity.

Have you asked GoDaddy directly why the domain is still on Afternic?

I'll tell you of my experience years ago. I am outside the US, but when I made a dot com reg over ten years ago (those days had to do it over the phone), the registrar commented on "that is a good domain name". When I let it expire, it got snapped up by "buy domains" (whoever they are), assumingly at auction at a cheap price.

Point is, the registrar was obviously ear-marking the domain when i registered it incase i let it expire. I don't think it's a particularly good domain, but the conversation stood out in my head and I have been very skeptical ever since.

Give the GoDaddy purchase the twenty days they said it would be and then follow up if there is no action after the twenty days.

Don’t sweat it. I’m sure it will get transferred into your account. Previous owner must’ve had it listed on afternic.

Once it’s in your account you may want to contact afternic and have it delisted from their site.

Thank you Saucy. I’ve spoken with Godaddy, and the deleted the Afternic listing. I should have it soon. I do feel a little bad for the Afternic domainer. I don’t think they meant to let it expire. I guess that’s part of the game though.

Don't feel bad...if you stay in this game long enough and acquire alot of names it will happen to you more than likely...they may have just decided to let it go...I've let about 20 go over the last couple of days.
