Thanks to this forum and posting in the Sales section for advice, I have really gained some understanding today. We often hear the words 'you should think of the function of your domain and the buyer to which you will sell it to.' - and I knew this, but only until recently when I've been looking for possible outbound sales, dis it really click.
When you start to really think about a possible customer for your domain, the way you approach a domain purchase really changes, or at least I've realised that today. Looking through Google at potential niche customers, I can visualise the kind of domain they might need to improve their business.

Some domains might sound and seem fairly decent, but when you actually come to try and find people who will benefit from having that domain, and try to get them to part with their cash, it doesn't seem as great anymore. So as a total beginner, I really think I've had an awakening of sorts today :)

Good post @Junglist101

Can you post link of the posting in the sales thread that you read about this?
Also, can you give an example of how did you use this info in your domain search approach at google?

Thanks

Sure, here is the link I read (4 parts and this is the 4th, the other 3 are linked at the bottom of it)

For now what I do is simply take a word or words within my domain, type them into Google and browse the results. I am looking for domains that are obviously too long in length, that use .org, .net or inferior extensions, and then also a poor choice of domain in general for the keyword.

so it should be smart to check google trends before buying a domain, you can see what is trending and then go for it and bulk up domains that potentially would be used in that industry

Yeah I also use the Google Keyword Planner; I found some nice domains relating to wine with this method, finding out about 'Vino' and 'Noir'

Never try outbound with garbage domains. Relevant domain offers to potential customers is more convertable

Search for an upward trending and short keyword in the niche you are looking into. I am still a total noob to domaining, as I started to take interest about 3 weeks ago lol. But I feel I am getting a good grasp on outbound. I've had 3 persons of interest on a few of my domains, but I think my quotes were too high for their liking.
