What is your number 1 reason for participating at Namepros? Of course people participate here in many areas but what is your primary reason?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I still think it is biased/skewed cause that (debates/trolling) seems to be a recent trending topic here, and getting a lot of views.

Yes, there been "sh!t disturbers" in the past, the ones that come to my mind have either been weeded out or moved on..

Ok thanks for expanding on your first comment, and I agree. I also think some people really just do debate (not troll) but they like to take on those on an opposing side of some extensions, strategies and certainly in the political thread.

I respect your opinion for me it certainly would not be all. I use Domaining.com to keep up with domaining news, I don't come here to debate and it's not my social network.

And for many a person I have dealt with, when I would write long educational posts in .tv, there would be people who would pm me, cool post too long, I really don't care about education, equity just get me money, it's the only reason I am in this God forsaken business, please help me get money.

So I believe the thought that everyone comes to Namepros for all of the above is misguided.
it's not misguided at all. I put my answer next to each one. Sorry but using it for 5 out of the 6 would pretty much be ALL OF THE ABOVE.
  1. Buy and Sell Domain Names. YES
  2. Debate. Not to debate but for good useful conversation which most times is a debate.
  3. It's my social network. Not really
  4. Learn how to make money with domain names. YES
  5. Share my knowledge to educate others. YES
  6. Keep up on Industry news. YES

When did I say it wasn't that for you, I believed you it was all of the above for you. Again everyone does not do that, I certainly am not at 5 out of 6 or 4 out of 6 for that matter.

I know many members they just want to sell names, they don't even read discussion threads.

It's a wonderful community, get to learn where the industry is moving and how best to modify your marketing techniques.

"social network"+++++

It is hard to choose only one, NamePros is many many things to me that have absolutely nothing to do with money or domain names.

I'd say - each of (2)-(6) more or less. Without No.1 (buying or selling) at this time. It is almost impossible to filter out low quality domains for buying purposes, and I do not sell @ wholesale prices anyway.

Also, one very important reason is not listed. Sometimes, NP members can receive support directly from industry suppliers which would otherwise be unavailable... emailing support@ [ or, in one particular case, service@ ] not always works as expected.

  4. Learn how to make money with domain names. - YES
  5. Share my knowledge to educate others. - Nope, I still learning
  6. Keep up on Industry news. - YES

While not at all surprised that Learn How To Make Money is in first place, I would not have predicted that it is so dominantly so. I think the fact that it, followed by Buy/Sell and Industry News are the vast majority of votes means that most are very focussed on the business side vs the social media side of NPs.

I wonder if there is any way that the priority list on the right bar could have an algorithm change / addition to better reflect the serious side that most seem to seek. Often a controversial title will zoom up the list, based on lots of people posting back and forth that they disagree with it, even if there is sometimes not much substantial content, while occasionally other posts that have a lot of meaningful content go largely unnoticed. But I realize it is a difficult problem.

I guess what I am wondering about is a section on right column that would have a list of a few articles that most would agree have a lot of value. For example, @Dave superb piece on Domain Investing, which is at the top of favourites for now, is the kind of valuable post I would like to see get highlighted for a longer period than it will naturally stay. One way (technically feasible?) might be a way to promote a post as particularly worthwhile and once it gets enough promotes it gets highlighted for some period of time.

JMHO

OK, so I voted for my "most obvious" reason, to buy and sell.

I never intended for domains to be my livelihood so I did not, nor would I, vote for "make money." I was here trying to find geo domains that suited what I was doing with hotel reservations and then, later, as I branched into other verticals of the Affiliate Marketing industry, seeking descriptive product domains.

I was never really interested in debating. But the other choices were, and still are, important to me. I do like to keep up with industry news and I always believed in "paying it forward" and am always happy to share any tidbits of information I may have.

This was also a source of my "social networking" in pre-Facebook and Twitter days. FB may be good for keeping up with family and some of my photography marketing but I deplore the "politics" and "fake/bad news" crap. So, maybe I can once again fine a "home" here.

We're working on this as we speak. :)

Yes, please. Murphy's law, basically. The worse the names listed, the more the owner tend to do the daily routine of "up". There are threads with tens of posts in them consisting of solely author posts and just by looking at the name I am able to say already if it one of those.

Using "new posts" function on the forum becomes useless, browsing domains for sale section too.

About the poll: couldn't choose No 1, as it is a little bit of everything

How about a Community Favorite sidebar item that highlights the #1 most liked (includes Likes and Thanks) new discussion from the past 30 days?

Community Favorite (on the sidebar) is also a link to the rest of the most liked content from the last 30 days.

We built the Domain Name Discussion aggregate to solve that problem: it is nearly the same as New Posts, but it only shows domain-related discussions.

Cool! Did not know that. Will check out. The thing is I do want to see the names for sale as well, but no way to weed out the trash, which makes 99% of offerings. No filters etc.

And even for Liquid names, for example, some are posted in "fixed price" section (suggestion: allow posters to choose both liquid names and fixed price, as those are two different attributes).

Basically, the feature I want and already suggested somewhere is ability to hide undesirable threads (instead of using ignore feature for all posts by a user).

Wow this has to be the most responsive big community anywhere. It is really nice to see Community Favourite and it is such a great and valuable article by @Dave that is the perfect way to start the new feature.

So impressed with all of those involved in the management of NPs.

Have a good week,

Bob

2. Learning more
3. Educating newbies

Very quality forum and community, that's the first.

Big interest in domain name business, the second.

And want to make my brand known, the third.

Like this forum, fourth.

Making my english better, fifth.

All of them. But the #1 reason should be "bull/sell domain names" for everyone. Without buy/sell, other options are pointless. In the end of the day this is a business oriented forum even though includes learning, sharing, socializing, news, etc.

I think the marketplace section of this forum needs to be improved with better search/sort functionalities. For instance, when I want to buy .com, I have to read all the threads one by one, opened by sellers. It needs to be categorized in variety of criteria like extension, domain age, traffic, registrar, seller's preferred payment methods, with/without BIN. When you want to buy domains with bitcoin you have to open and read all sales threads. These criteria should be added to the websites for sale section as well.

I feel just like @Vito & @Silentptnr said on the first page. I've gone thru all the phases and could have ticked pretty much all the choices at once. Although I'm not a social media lover. But overall, the main reason for being here is because this is THE GoTo place on the internet for learning, discussing, getting the latest news about domains. #1. I probably spend on average, about 2 hours a day here, on average. But NP's is on one of my browser tabs 24/7. For no wait, easy access :)

My not so social network, i just come to read about the scandals. Jk, love this place, started out learning and i try to help educate newbies but many of the answers are already posted in the search bar. Share sales data, buy on occasion, last year this community helped a lot when I was unemployed and had to sell when bills were due.

Even a lot of the respected domain blogs, create blog posts, based around posts found here on NP's :)

But not too proud to use the content and juice of NP's in their own blog posts. It seems. I'm not besmirching anyone in particular. Because some of the bloggers are very active here also on NP's. So they also contribute a lot to NP's. I just wanted to point this out. For some it's a symbiotic relationship. For others, not so much. Running and ducking.....

To learn how to make money with domain names. I delved into it 2 years ago, but stopped due to health and financial reasons. I've been involved with IT since 2000 when I was a Teen Web Developer for the now-defunct Brooklyn Expedition project.
