The Bahamas
TheBahamas.com

One of only 67 countries that have English as the official language.

One of only 10 countries in the North America / Caribbean region where the ".com" is the undisputed local king.

GDP of 12 billion per year, of which North American tourism is the biggest sector.

New multi-billion dollar tourism infrastructure, e.g., the vast Baha Mar complex.

Domain registered in 1995. Virtually all extensions already registered.

One of only a few countries (or cities) where the definite article ("The" or "Las" / "Los") forms an integral part of the short form of the name. Other examples include The Gambia, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. Try saying, "I'm going to Bahamas" (without "The") ... doesn't sound right.

Names in this category typically go for as much as seven figures. I'm willing to consider offers in the ballpark of the mid-five figure range.

Please note: The Bahamas embraces more than 700 islands.

Please note:

The Bahamas is one of only five neighboring countries that directly border the U.S.

These are Canada, Mexico, The Bahamas, Cuba, and Russia. (The latter three are maritime borders. Russia has an island within sight of one of the Alaskan islands.)

Of these neighbors, ONLY The Bahamas is 100% English-speaking, and ONLY The Bahamas uses the dot-com domain as the undisputed local internet king. (Canada largely uses ".ca," Mexico uses ".mx," etc.)

The local domain in The Bahamas is ".bs," and no one wants B.S., and anyway sites cater to American and Canadian tourists; B.S. would be confusing.

Two points of note:

Several major web sites are imitations of this domain name, with a word added. A prominent example is TheBahamasInvestor.com.

Also, there are an amazing number of domains with "TheBahamas" in minor extensions, such as thebahamas.com.au, thebahamas.ru, and thebahamas.ch.

The Gambia and The Bahamas are the only two English-speaking countries that officially use "The" as an integral part of the short form of the name.

One of the best things about a geographic domain is that it is free and clear of any trademark issues.

Simple geographic names cannot be trademarked, because that would impinge on the rights of everyone living in that locality.

Note:

The Bahamas is one of the top tourism destinations in the North America region.

In recent years, The Bahamas has had phenomenal growth: approximately 20% growth per year.

Another prominent "imitation" site (using almost the same domain name but with an added word) is this one:

thebahamasmls.com

It's the official site of the Real Estate Association of The Bahamas.

What more do you want to prove that this would be a perfect site for real estate (or tourism, or entertainment, or anything related to The Bahamas) ???

Comparable geographic domains that all sold for more than 500,000 include NewZealand.com, Jerusalem.com, Macau.com, Melbourne.com, Singapore.com, Britain.com, Russia.com, and many others.

Unlike some of those other geographic entities, in The Bahamas, the language is English and the most popular domain is ".com," making this domain incredibly precious.

Another key consideration: I am asking for offers in the ballpark of the mid-five figure range, meaning the buyer should profit handsomely through development and/or resale.

Although culturally part of the Caribbean and part of the Greater Caribbean community, technically The Bahamas is not part of the Caribbean proper. Together with Russia, it is one of the only countries that share a maritime border with the U.S. but no land border.

Although the biggest economic sectors in The Bahamas are tourism and international banking, it does have a number of exports, chief among which are pharmaceuticals, crawfish, salt, cement, rum, argonite, residual fuel oils, distilled fuel, cascarilla bark, tomatoes and citrus.

FYI: the name "The Bahamas" derives from a Spanish term, "Baha Mar," meaning "Shallow Sea."
