Is this a better idea than domain parking?

Bit of a newb here, but have an idea.

- seems that domain parking is on way down due to more tech savvy audiences not wanting to click on generic text ad links... Who can blame them?

- the DP landing pages are ugly, not inviting and aren’t fooling people anymore.

If you have keyword domain name, would it be better to build own webpage with free links to like-services to create traffic to your domain with a view to increasing domain name value? Not sure whether you could put Adsense on at this stage.

Eg, for autoco.com (eg only, not my reg), you could set up a page with some basic content (headings, descriptions etc), images, and links to auto services.

Not sure if the above is termed as a 'developed' site ot not.

But, yeah, at this stage, maybe just a landing page with links and basic content. Could you put Adsense on at this stage?

How does affiliate marketing work? Could those links be referrals or could you monetize them somehow? Willing to do it for free initially to drive traffic there though.

Thoughts, opinions?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
There really no stopping anyone from developing their domain name.

Getting free traffic from Google is much harder now and requires content that needs to be updated after a few months.

I think the question you are asking if it is worth your time.

*Disclaimer: I'm sure this is nothing new!

Guess I'm asking whether it's okay to put free links to related businesses and services (to start with) as a way of generating traffic.

I've got time and I'm a pretty good writer, so updating content wouldn't be a problem if it was only a few hours per week.

Will have to do some research on backlinks though.

landing pages are ugly
Ugly parking pages used to be the best performing ones. Why? I do not know. It is pure stats. Domansponsor .com (no more in business) offered a large selection of designs with auto-rotating, and the most ugly design showed the best RPM.

I've been using Bodis, and it seems you have to click through twice to get to any ad. Eg, go to domain > click text link > page of ads comes up > then click on ad. Who is going to stick around for that? I'd have thought it should be url > page of text ad links> click preferred text link, without the step inbetween.

Anyhow, i'm going to try out SEDO, but in the meantime, develop one or two with links to related businesses and products, as well as some image and text content. Or, maybe i should just forget the text links, focus on content.

I was also thinking of a directory style page with text links to related products and services, but i don't see how i could monetize that, unless those links could be monetized on a per-click basis.

This is how Google works. Unfortunately. All parking companies are affected.

You may use your affiliate links. If, however, the user has adblocker - he will be warned if clicked (best case), or will see nothing (worst case). 50%+ of surfers do use some sort of adblock now.

Hmm, maybe I'll just put free links (non-ads) and content up there and see what happens. Worth a try

Perfectly said.

The worst black lander was the best performing one for me.

"Was"... Does that mean you no longer use domain parking, or that it is not profitable?

Even though other threads have asked similar question, I am glad that you started this @lemonzest because I agree it is not at all clear what to do, and some insightful data provided by respondents. I always wondered why most pro parking looked so ugly, had never realized it was because they were shown to work better - thanks for info @tonyk2000. It seems to me really hard with adblockers and current Google to make enough money to make up for any negatives ads may bring against probability of actually selling a domain name, so I personally prefer ad free landers if you mainly want to sell domain.

I think for select domains the route of ad free content and links the OP is wondering about has some benefits (and also one potential downfall that a possible buyer might see it boxing in the domain to that use). I would try it for one domain that you feel well qualified to choose links for and see if it gets much traffic. If linking you probably should have disclaimer that you have no association with sites and organizations linked, etc. Good luck with it!

Thanks Bob.

I was more thinking of developing the sites with links as a way for Google to pick up and maybe create some pathways, to ultimately increase domain name value (not familiar with acronyms for valuation yet)...

I've currently got most of my domains parked at SEDO. I think that Bodis has better reporting tools and stats, so I'll stick with SEDO for now, but may go back to Bodis if I want to drill down into the data a little more. I would use that as an indication of which names to hold on to. But, I am also seeing the value of collecting names that are in a niche that I am familiar with, or would enjoy creating content for.

I will let the bad domains go at renewal.

With regards to the domains that I will hold on to and choose to develop, I am going to develop a prototype using an unlisted name. Once i have my theme and layout finalised, I will apply it to several other domains.

I agree with keeping a few good domains. I am erring that way. I have a big project at hand which I have realised is going to take a lot of my time, so any domain or small site is going to have to be an easy task.

I was thinking about creating my own basic/free websites too, and find good affiliate links to add myself. This would be for domains that already get a lot of traffic, and more about monetizing that traffic.

Wouldn't this essentially be the same as what parking providers do... except that with this strategy you're just doing the work yourself, include the affiliate links of your choice, and keep 100% of the revenue (compared to parking provider like Sedo who has everything automated, in an ugly fashion, and keeps a percentage of the money)?

I'm sure it's been discussed here before, and the revenue to be earned might not be worth the effort, but I'd like to know how many people do this or if it's worthwhile to do with some domains. I've never made any money parking with Sedo, and never intended to, but I've been thinking of this for a while so i might give it a try.

These are the things I’ve discovered so far:

- need a good, cheap (if not free) web template. The free ones are usually limited in customisation unless you have coding knowledge. I’m sure they can look good though if thought goes into it.

- Not sure how affiliate links or ads plug into free templates, something to be researched.

- Hosting needs to accomodate the potential to ad domains

- Yes, you do need to add content. Not sure about copyright for images, but will research.

Any tips on setting up affiliate links?

creating my own LP did not give me an advantage that was worth the effort

"whypark" had the idea to autocreate LP with content to perform better
they never did though
- they are out of business as far as I know -

for me it's selling
or parking

you take what you can get
or you forget

2004 is gone

Parking was never serious money. Except for 0.5% of domains that are ultra-premium which parking companies thrived on, and maybe some still do. We made very good revenue from custom parking pages that included organic search results for the domain keywords. But algorithm updates ended that.

In 2019, you have to choose between flipping or playing the long game. I prefer the long game. There is no viable business plan that involves parking. At best it will subsidize or offset renewal costs. Long game involves building business brands. Creating a brand involves building trust, and trust leads to conversion. Short term, flipping depends on quick returns with profits relying heavily on volume of sales.
