I wrote a post about this today and since, conversations in Domain wanted threads are not allowed, we can discuss here in discussion.

The topic I am curious about, the buyers looking for 1 word .coms, generic, descriptive not made-up or anything like that. What kind of names are you hoping to acquire with a $500 budget?

This is a serious question, are the hopes for very obscure, not well known, one word names that would have little commercial value like Floccinauccinihilipilification? It's one word and has an interesting meaning that fits in with the search for any one word .com so long as it's a dictionary word.

The meaning of the word:

This word is 30 characters long. Despite its use of flocci, the plural of floccus and which means tufts of wooly hair or small, rounded tufts of clouds, the whole word is not a scientific term. Floccinauccinihilipilification means trifling, of little or no value or something that has been estimated to be valueless.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Only a fool would think that name has any value. 100 smart domainers could memorize that word and when asked to spell it a week from now 99 would get the spelling wrong. If any random person can't spell the domain then does it really have any value?

Of course that word has no value, it was used for extreme exaggeration, I want to know what people are expecting for $500 for a 1 word, generic .com.

I don't have any views, but I did learn a new word for the day! :xf.cool:
I would not rule it out, quite entirely, on the lack of ability to spell it (although that is huge negative). However, it seems to me even single words only have value is they are memorable and recognized as words by the average person, and this one would not be. Also, I am a big believer in words with emotional feel, and this word seems lacking to me. Yes, the definition you provide does allow for interesting possible applications, but only if enough people know that, and because it fails the first step of recognition I think it has no value.... or I could say it is floccinauccinihilipilification :xf.grin:!

OK so now I understand the question :xf.wink:
If you are lucky you can get a word that while not day to day common, is a genuine word and has a meaning that has purpose for a specialist group. An example would be cableway that sold in .com for $516 on GD in Sept 2018. It officially is for a system transferring stuff with cables, but can be seen to have other uses like in electronics and electrical, for example, or even transmission of messages. But finding words this good for $500 not easy!

I posted on Domains Wanted about a year ago for single word .coms ... and was flooded with messages which included just about everything BUT single words. These included made-up words, two and more words, etc. Even non-.coms were sent. In the end, there were a few that were actually words, but priced in the thousands ... even had somebody believe their ten "single word" domains, all ending in "ing" were valuable. The $500 single word .com (one that is actually the word, not the plural or "ing" version, and not some long unheard-of word) is going to be a hard find.

I've had the opposite problem in that I've sent ideal domains to some of these requests and never heard back. I'm sure a couple years ago I even sent one of the exact example domains they posted and heard nothing. :xf.laugh:

Few years back, before gd rolled out the appraisals, you could get valuable dictionary words for mid xxx at the auctions.

For example, I got myrtles/com, temperaments/ com, convening/com in that price range.

Here on np, you will get decent names mostly in xxxxx range quoted, along with so much trash that you will be sorry you ever started the thread.

I generally do not reply to domain wanted threads as everyone is fishing for someone to offer them some cheap gold. If I want to buy a domain I will type in what I want or similar and or make an offer. If I want to sell a domain first lead is who is buying or using that keyword. If I ever start a wanted thread I would likely be bombarded in stuff I wouldn't really want anyway as mentioned or be as tight as everyone else and expect a decent 4L for $100. I don't start wanted threads as I would want the same bargain as everyone else is asking for something for nothing.

That's exactly the reason i feel that the request section should be highly moderated/regulated. Most of the people making those requests are jokers. What they benefits from wasting their time and other people's time, I don't know.

I have sent exact descriptions time and again without response. Those loons don't know what they are looking for.

It would be interesting to ask the same question, but for the .org extension. I suspect you could get some rather nice single words in .org for $500, and while the increase is slow, .org seems to continue to edge up in both real world use and in resale market, slowly.

Just for discussion sake.
English words only..?

What about a French/German/Spanish/etc word?

How about Favour (English spelling) versus Favor (American spelling)

Well Bri these are actual requests, my point for the thread was for the people actually posting these to come in and say what they hope to get for $500 in a one word generic .com, and yes I do believe they want English keywords.
