I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I don't think google will rate hyphens better or worse, their algorithm is much too complex. The site will rate on popularity, backlings etc.

The whole idea that google ranks according to domain name has been losing cloud for some time now. Google does not specify everything in how their search results rank data but you can see examples where domains without dashes come out ahead and the other way around.

Way too many complexities in google ranking than domain name alone.

That's right. There are many different variables to consider and google is so complex that there most certainly isn't a perfect answer to my question... but do we have any idea to what extent google takes into account the words in a domain when it comes to ranking? Or is that era over and people today mainly want domains for branding/marketing purposes? I thought keywords still had significance in terms of ranking, just less so than before (as Google continues to become smarter).

Spot any gems yet?

Pardons.ca just went for $650 on pool.

That's a steal! It's at least a thousand bucks for an actual pardon. Some smart lawyer will make a lot of money with that domain.

I agree. I would have gone much higher to get it.... had I not recently spent a lot of money to acquire something more valuable. Can't win them all i guess.

@Shawn LeBlanc - Talking about dashes in domains

My son and I took a drive this morning and we saw a really nice Mercedes-Benz dealership which was just purchased by Pfaff Automotive group. So we decided to pull in and look at the nice cars and as we pulled into the driveway, guess what greeted us??

Welcome to:

Mercedes-Benz Kitchener- Waterloo

www.Mercedes-Benz-Kitchener-Waterloo(dot)ca

Wow what a mouthful.....
Now my son is 12 and into domaining just like me, he gets on his phone and immediately checks...

www.mbkw(dot)com is taken but www.mbkw(dot)ca is not.

So mbkw(dot)ca is now part of the MapleDots portfolio.

Incredible that whoever registered this mouthful of a domain would not have thought to check the acronym for availability. My son says he will try and sell it for 1.5k to see if he can make a quick flip.

I told him the dealership is brand new and not to be in such a hurry, I said list it on mapledots and its only a question of time before they figure it out and come to you. At that time we will ask 5k, it may take a year or so but the wait will bring in a higher payday.

Someone should do a story on multi-generational domain families! (or has someone like @Ron Jackson already done it?)

My son has 288 domains in his portfolio and he has never paid for a renewal from his own money, he has had one significant sale which assures he can register for a number of years to come.

He has learned quickly and his portfolio is about half ca to com.

Impressive... especially for his age. I wouldn't be surprised if he was the youngest person with the largest portfolio (of their own).

He helped me register a bunch of domains a while back and I was impressed with what he picked up from me talking incessantly about domains over supper time.

When one of the domains he suggested paid off I let him have the money to start his own portfolio. He has taken a keen interest and since is is mostly intop cars he immediately spotted the potential for the domain name I mentioned above.

I'm really proud of the little guy, all day all he does is add .ca or .com to things he sees. Some of his ideas I would never have thought of by myself. Never dismiss a young mind, sometimes a fresh way of thinking can be just what is needed in the domaining business.

I told him he has to use his own money going forward and impressively enough he has been able to cover his costs thus far.

That's great. He's gonna be a domain hustler genius before he even becomes a teenager.

Does he discuss domains with his friends? I would love to hear a bunch of 12-year-old kids discuss buying and selling domains lol.

He says his friends don't understand it, they call him weird.
That's a given because they will eventually become end users whereas my son grew up listening to me talking about domaining.

@MapleDots

That's smart of you to show him the ropes that young. I wish my father had done the same when i was 12...

Do you guys think it's worth holding onto 123marijuana .ca?

I decided not to renew it but the email reminders are making me question myself. I also have 123cannabis, 123seeds and 123THC, which I decided to hang onto for at least another year.

I know they're far from amazing (and priced them accordingly), but there are approx 700 reported "123" domain sales showing on namebio.com (none of which are .ca).

Would you guys keep it or let it go?

Hi. I would let it go. I think we get so emotionally attached to domains thinking that what if? We have to move on if the "business" is not making any money or leads. As far as speculation goes well that is just a risk if you are absolutely sure the meaning is well adopted in the marketplace. How many companies have the 123 at the start of their name and does it make sense? As Tony Soprano once said "If it don't work as a business get rid of it"

I would hang on to 123Cannabis and drop the rest.

Here is my idea for a website...

Get your Cannabis, easy as 1.. 2.. 3..

Three step process to your door

1. Visit 123Cannabis.ca
2. Order you brand
3. Arrives at your door in two business days.

Simple as 1 2 3!!

Most of the cannabis users don't want to count up to 123 LOL. Depending where you live you can get it within hours now.

123 is how many brain cells that Ross Rebagliati, the poster child for marijuana moderation, still has left.

I recently saw an interview with this guy and he literally looks like he has an IQ of 3 and should be committed. Very sad story.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I had the same idea as @MapleDots... in terms 123 meaning "easy as 1-2-3".

123+whatever is definitely common enough for websites/domains, and there's at least 637 reported domain sales with 123 in them. I know i already said that but i think that's worth taking into consideration.

Aside from the expression "easy as 1-2-3", I probably got the idea from 123ink. ca since i've been buying all all my ink from them for the past 5 years. They were 123inkcartridges.ca for years, until recently when i noticed they changed to the shorter 123ink.

I'm pretty certain i'll let 123marijuana drop... but I wanted to ask if you guys are familiar with Godaddy's "whoiscounts" that you can retrieve when exporting a list of your domains registered with Godaddy? It's supposed to tell how many times someone did a whois search on your domains, but only counts whois searches done through Godaddy's whois tool.

I learned of this a while back when trying to export a list of all my domains... but i almost forgot about it.

Apparently this is a good way (or at least one way) to gauge whether you ought to renew or not. I would like to know your thoughts, or at least share in case some of you weren't already familiar.

This article covers the subject quite well: https://domainnamewire.com/2018/01/11/tracking-whois-searches-decide-domain-renewals/
