If you do the math you will find out that there are 456,976 possible combinations for LLLL.com
That's a lot!

I thought there may be a chance that some combinations weren't registered, so I used a tool to generate all the possible combinations and then went through all of them using Name Bright bulk search.

So it was worth it!
at least I'm now sure that there isn't a single 4L.com that is not registered!
What a waste of time lol

Nice find!

If you have more time to waste...

... add a vowel to every possible 4L.com, and report back the percentage of 5L.com's available remaining ending in A, E, I, O, U, and heck, why not Y.

Note: using an automated tool will make tasks like this waaaaaaaaaaheeeey easier. Though IF HugeDomains, uses data from NameBright Bulk availability to help determine which domains to snipe, then please, by all means, feed it as much pigeon shit as humanly possible.

Grilled, do you have any info regarding HugeDomains registering some available domains eaxctly after they were checked through namebright? I have used godaddy, namecheap, name, namebright, dynadot and a few other smaller one's, but for me namebright and namecheap they were ok, it happens much more through godaddy and dynadot than with namebright and namecheap. If you have some extra info, please share.

No. I was just making my comment in jest. If this did, this would be front running, and most registrars publicly speak out against this practice. You could review their TOS, or comments made by their staff, to possibly find more specifics on their stance. And/or start a new thread, tag, and ask them if you can't find the any specific answers.

I've used their availability tool many times, and have never found direct evidence of them registering a domain exactly after I checked.

I have ran bulk availability combinations, and found HugeDomains to be the new registrant of some of those domains as they come available. Though they are one of the biggest domain registrants in the world of dropped domains, so who's to say my searches directly influenced their registration decision.

But I do wonder why they offer one of the best availability checkers out their. Is their tech that more advanced than other registrars? Do they have more resources? Or do they supplement the value with the free data? I haven't used a web based availability checkers in a while, but when I used to, I remember them as having (one of) if not the best web based availability checkers in the Biz. Is that still the case?

I think that they have one of the best web based availability checkers, but in the same time I'm not sure that they hunt intentionally available domains, I think that they hunt mostly dropped domains. In my case, domains which I have registered using their website to check them out, registering them after a few days/weeks and then after one year, some of the one's I've dropped, HD picked them up, so the same domain was not good enough when was available, but was good when it dropped.

According to this history of domain names the last possible LLLL was registered in Dec 2013.

https://mashable.com/2014/03/10/domain-names-history/

I wonder if the author has a namePros account...

If he did (or does) he must have missed the namePros LLLL.com COUNTDOWN thread from 2006/2007.

even all of L--L.com (double hyphen) are taken.
N--N.com are taken as well.

lol.

The Zone file could have told you that my guy.

Take the zone file, match it against your generated permutations. Any entry that does not have a match, take that list THEN do a bulk search of your sample (1 - 300 domains).

Sometimes domains slip through the zone file for the day, which is why you might end up with a list of 1 - 300 domains.

Always try to slim down your data size before processing.

Thanks for the post.

Thanks so much @Grilled. I had no idea that there was such a thread on NPs. Not sure how the startup that did the analysis and posted the article did not know of the prior work years earlier. It is interesting how relatively quickly it went from 22% to none at all in less than 2 years. Since the time they have all been taken I presume that some have dropped and been picked up again, so literally speaking other periods (briefly) when some available?

I see that the article I linked has been updated with other corrections in 2019, so surprised they did not correct this one over the years. The actual source of the information is pretty inadequately detailed.

There's some other interesting comments in the LLLL.com COUNTDOWN thread besides that of the first post.

At 110 pages, 2,742 replies, with no updates since 2008, it's threads like these that are the true hidden gems of namePros.

Someone like @James Iles should now and then for a post do something like "hidden gems in the archives of NPs". The countdown thread for LLLL (com) would be interesting as one of the threads featured.

I agree.

Every now and then I bump some of the old threads. I've received a few rule violations for going about it (the wrong way?) by posting a popcorn emoji or what not, if I had nothing else to add, but felt the community would benefit from the unearthing of an old nP gem.

If nothing else, this could be an idea for a new thread. E.g. post an interesting nP thread that hasn't been updated in five years or what not.

Or a this time 1, 5, and or 10 years ago, these threads were trending would be an interesting subsection.

It has been a while since the countdown thread. It was an interesting time for me. I get the impression that the chinese started lifting the minimum prices for 4 letter domain names in recent years as there are symbolic meanings for the different domain names. I don't do domaining as much as I did back then. I remember asking for the thread to be closed when the countdown was finished. It was replaced with the sales thread in the short domain name section.

The countdown thread was fun to be part of as the countdown was actually taking place. LLLLs have been a good investment for me and I like them even more now. They are much less speculative and, I think, underpriced across the board (all patterns, American premium, Chinese premium, random)
I bought ezlk.com for $110 off gd today.
