I am not doing this (I read somewhere it should be done when selling a domain)... I don't feel comfortable putting my personal information online. just wondering if others here are putting their real information on the whois record? will that improve the chances of making a domain sale?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Set privacy to ''on'' and list the domain/domains to all possible domain marketplaces. No need to put fake information, as you may have conflict with ICANN and lose your domains. I have read it somewhere else in this forum.

Note: Being domain investor YOU WANT buyers to reach you out for your domains. I always have my privacy on ''off'', it's my decision. But, as i live in a EU country, i don't care about it at all.

not talking about putting fake info on there, question is do I put my real info out there or keep privacy on when selling? if I remove privacy my real personal information would show up.

Privacy on - bad idea. Been discussed to death. Put privacy on domains you don’t want to sell (because you don’t want any potential buyer to contact you via WhoIs).

As well, putting false info on the WhoIs is grounds for losing the domain.

Just rent a P.O. Box or private mail box address and use a google voice or other VOIP set to “do not disturb” to catch all the robo calls. If you do receive a valid call caller will leave a VM for you to hear.

Put your real info. Why?: ICANN.
Use privacy. Why?: Spammers.
Don't use privacy. Why?: Potential Buyers. No commissions charged.

Question is redundant if you forward your domains to your own landers with your desired contact info. Now you can have whois privacy and everyone sees only the information you want them too.

Over time an experienced domainer knows that some inquiries come via your landing page and some via your WhoIs contact info. Would you lose the direct WhoIs inquiries if you put up privacy?

The way I look at, Why take a chance?

If they know how to look up Whois they should have no problem contacting the privacy email provided in place of your real one.

To each his own. I don’t enjoy spending my time fighting spam. If someone wants the domain they will use the privacy email or go to your landing page.

Most of my domains dont have Privacy set but I am slowly changing the privacy to ON and also moving from the registrars that doesnt provide free privacy. People can still contact you through the privacy email set and I even receive spam through those emails, namely, the privacy emails of Dynadot and Epik. If I register a domain in those two places, then I always receive spam but it goes directly to the spam folder.

Whether to use WHOIS privacy or not is a matter of personal preference.

However if you choose not to, it is best you use your real contact info. You want potential buyers to reach you and you want to make it easy for them to do so.

Last month I sold two domains to a buyer who contacted me using the privacy email provided by my domain registrar, which shows buyers have no problem contacting me even when the Whois privacy is turned on.

I got my 25% of domain sales by whois. Even though I put a for sale banner, i got inquiries to whois email. So I suggest to keep privacy off.

privacy is not free at most registrars. I prefer real whois data. Can use spam filters to avoid junk mails

And I back out of the sale as lost trust...…Sounds like a stolen name story. So if you don't use privacy your still frauding with a false name. If anything put buyers details in but why should they have to give them to you instead of the registrar?
