FOG is the new CLOUD.

Has anyone been reading up on Fog Computing recently? Cisco have brought it to the table to aid the Internet of Things (again).

Anyway, don't know much about it and it's yet another new buzz word to appear this year but I'm starting to get 'registration fatigue' ;) so feel free to look it up and see what's available, although I was surprised at how many FOG related domains have already gone. My two are:

FogServers.com

Fog360.com

Been saying it for a while in this thread but people enjoy wasting money.

It will take a while for the folks in the IOT, AI, Nano and Driverless thread to wake up too...a small handful of random sales don't justify regging dozens of names in a market.

Iot Ai will do good with strong names , even more then good but it depends on the name as many others technologies

We have differing opinions of what's doing "good". Strong names in any market will sell, that's pretty obvious, but whether or not it's going to be a big niche is another story.

If you create google alerts for "Fog Computing" you will see there is a lot of development in this area, just because this thread doesn't get any action about it, doesn't mean its not happening, it just means people aren't watching. Create google alerts for these new technologies, then you dont have to go looking, it all gets emailed to you.

You will have to be patient with this one though and only get decent names

That is a good point. And of course there could be unreported sales. But it still doesn't look like it's becoming as brandable as a term as Cloud and I still see a lot of companies who do Fog using Cloud in their branding, in the same way that some companies that do AR are using VR in their brand. It could be that they were doing Cloud first and decided to move on to Fog, not sure. But it just doesn't look like it's catching on as a *marketing* term. But what do I know. There are a ton of terms that are highly active in the news but they're not selling as a domain keyword...

No not yet, but its early days, cloud has been around over 13 years now and was also slow like this in the beginning , its just a tech buzzword at the moment, it wont start getting regular sales until more tech firms start adopting and using the word, its a word created and being pushed by Cisco.

I'd personally be concerned about how little people have heard of 'fog' computing when investing in these names. From reading a little about it I'd say that it is analogous to 'edge' computing, which is well known and is being widely adopted.

I work as a software dev and everything is about 'Cloud' computing and 'Edge' processing is coming into the foreground more so at the moment, so that is a saving grace. We want our infrastructure to be resilient and not all focused to one point. But then, CISCO trademarked "CISCO FOG COMPUTING" in 2013 which was 6 years ago and I haven't heard anyone utter a word about it.

Another huge difference between CLOUD and FOG is that CLOUD affected everyone and every business in a positive way. It was the difference between managing your own on-site infrastructure at great expense to having it all managed for you and it being flexible at the touch of a button. Scalable, low barrier to entry for small enterprise, 100% flexible, no management required leading to cost savings in an unimaginable number of areas.

Can FOG really be compared to the CLOUD revolution?

No it can't .

Plus Fog is kind of a negative word imo

This to me is the barrier. And anecdotally, I find edge used more than fog.

I still think some fog names will have value in niches but the rainbow rising out of the fog may be a mirage.

Im wondering if this trend will ever grow. The market prediction is 2024. We where way ahead of the curve years ago.

Fog is not the new cloud :xf.laugh:

I said that quite a while back

I must have brain fog because this thread was completely hidden from memory.

I don't think fog will ever get off the ground, cloud is too entrenched.
