Another Long One...But a Good On This Time...Or Am I Crazy?

Most of you know my story by now. 20 years ago I purchased dustie.com. I checked and dusty.com was available then too, but seeing as how domains were 100.00 a pop and I had just bought a new computer for 2,000.00+ (Remember those days?), I decided against buying it. If I remember it was about three months after that, 3 months of having to tell people how to spell my email address ([email protected]) umpteen times, I decided to go for it after all, but guess what...it was gone by then!

I have regretted that decision ever since. In the last 20 years I've spent spelling my name to folks who wanted my email address. It's the same as Recons.com said in the Dustie.com thread... having his name saves him a bunch of time spelling his email out. In my case, over 20 years, that's a LOT of time!

Well, when I thought dustie.com was gone for good, I went searching for another name in GoDaddy and, to my delight, I found that dustie.art was available for 9.99! I snatched it up...and then went looking for dusty.art immediatly after. Godaddy said it was not available. Figures...

But then, reading in here, and following links to read about the .art domain, it wasn't long before I discovered that, just because GD said it wasn't available, didn't mean it wasn't available! It could be that it was a Premium .ART name and GD wasn't carrying these premium names so simply said they wern't available when searched

So I went to .art...and sure enough, dusty.art was available...for £1710.00 (about 2200 in us dollars). I checked other registrars, and some had it 300 to 400.00 dollars higher then that price... and none had it lower. I just couldn't swing it.

Last night I went to look again on .art, and they still had it listed for £1710.00. This time I decided to click through to "purchase", choosing .art as the reigistrer, (you can choose others from .art's site) to see if maybe I could find out what renewal costs would be, knowing I'm not actually buying it until I pay for it.

Imagine my surprise when, on the next page .Art said "buy this domain for $1600.00/yr with 30.00 renewal! What? Really? That's nearly a 600.00 saving from what it had been just two pages back and for the last two days I'd been checking on it. OH, My Gosh... should I??? That's a lot of money...

Since I'm an artist, and want to use [email protected] for my art business, I would absolutely love to have dusty.art too. I'd never have to spell my name for [email protected]! All I have to do is have two emails that merge to the same email account.

So it was time to have a heart to heart with my husband, a non computer guy who I thought for sure would think I was crazier then a loon! I explained it all to him, and, partly because of how distraught I'd been over the dustie.com situation I'm sure, he agreed it would be a good name for me to have (Ok, so I took advantage of him at a weak moment...name a wife who hasn't!). He said that if that was what I wanted we could make it happen. After all, what are credit cards for, right?

Wahoo!! And to think...only two weeks ago I WAS totally DISTRAUGHT and DUSTYLESS! All three dusties are going to be under Lock and Key (have to find out how .art locks their domains now).

Am I crazy for going in hock and spending 1,600.00 on a .art domain name??? Probably...but I'm feeling a pretty happy crazy about it right now...

why not "artdusty.com" and "artdustie.com" ?

ArtDusty.com sounds like GoDaddy.com

I've probably sold about a half dozen domains in the last 15 years, all small potatoes..under between mostly priced 500 to 800.00. It's really just a hobby and I leave it for long stretches of a time. I do check my premium GD domains, and change prices, from time to time, which, of course, probably led to my mistake of all mistakes!

Being in here has taught me I have so much to learn so I do think I'll hang around here for some time now...and try to learn from the true pros, of which you are one! So pleased to have met you, another domainer gal and an artist at heart to boot!

I think getting reacquainted with NamePros was also a bit of my luck playing itself out these last two weeks.

NP is definitely the only place this resolution could have happened.

Dustie.com is by far the best domain name you have IMO. It is short and authoritative.

I would NOT start using anything .art. Or anything dusty___.com or dustie___.com

I was actually looking at dusty.art, as I already own dustie.art (got it at GD for 9.99). I just figured if I had dustie.art and dusty.art, I'd never have to worry about spelling dustie again. But I admit..that was too much money, so I cancelled the decision on the advice of all you wonderful people!

I do hear what your saying. I've always been proud to use Dustie.com. For 20 years I've never considered having anything else, that is, until all this happened. Then I had to go scrambling to look for another name.

I love that I found dustie.art. I started using it since I no longer had access to dustie.com and found it fits me. I'm proud to tell people I'm dustie.art...I think it really tells a story about me, more then dustie.com I think. Everytime I've given it out it's started a conversation which starts something like this...

"Really? Dot Art? I didn't know there was such a name. That's cool!"

So locally, I will be using Dustie.Art. On the web, however, I will have both dustie.com and dustie.art. Both will be leading to my art website where I display my work.

Also, this way, if someday in the future I do get a good offer to sell Dustie.com, then I still have Dustie.Art that people are also aware of! I'm keeping two emails boxes from now on, just to be safe!

Thanks Steven...now I have to show my ignorance... What does NG before the TLD stand for? Is there a "key" that explains what all the Abbreviations used in this forum mean? I am able to figure out a lot of them simply by they context they are used in, but not all of them I'm afraid.

I like that they've come up with so many ngTLDs. There are over 7 Billion people in the world, and most all those born in developing nations after the year 2000 are totally net savvy. As they join the working world they will be looking for websites. With all the best of the .com, .nets, and .orgs gone, they will need to look elsewhere. A plethora of TLDs will allow them to have better access to a domain name that will better define their websites, and ultimately, their online identity.

I can tell you that I'd much rather have Dustie.Art then Dustie.Org or Dustie.Net as my own domain. So, as I see it, if you can't have the .com, future generations are going to be quick to go seeking an alternative TLDs. That can bode well for the future of domainers who are willing to take a chance and embrace the best of the ngTLDs.

And I am. I just bought Zoie.Art for Reg Price.

Don’t think dustie.art or dusty.art will ever be worth much. Even at $30. renewal is higher than for any dot com. As a domain investment either is a poor choice.

Sounds like you want to start or continue a business on the domain. A real business intending to go somewhere is definitely able to justify spending money on a good domain (but this isn’t even a good domain). If you’re not sure if this will become a viable business, and perhaps end up more of a hobby, even more reason to shy away from an expensive but poor domain but also for a hobby - not worth spending much money on the domain, good or bad, period. (Not worth spending a lot for a hobby domain for any reason - let alone for a mere email redirect.)

So: flowchart it:

Business or hobby?

If hobby - the analysis stops there. Don’t spend too much. If you’re set on dustie.art and this is a hobby, just stick with it don’t spend more on something expensive that you don’t really need.

Business - will it go somewhere? Then get a good domain. And in this case probably are better exact match dot coms around that price you mention for dusty.art

Yes it means switching to a dot com but many businesses do exactly that once they have the funds to move up to the king.

Differing views on domains and domaining. I think like any industry, some see as either just a job or a way to make money, others developed it into an art form. I thinks it's at that stage where it becomes a passion.

Either way, just a job, or an art, important to hone it into a craft that works for you. And getting the right domain, whatever the extension, that reflects that passion or craft, can do wonders for developing connections with your buyers, visitors or users.

We live in a wonderful world with so many diverse peoples, all who have differing opinions. What a dull world if we all thought alike. I was happy to find .ART. Dustie.Art looks great and fits me very well as an Artist. Also, the last two weeks has shown me that people really like it it also. I've had to give my dustie.art email out to all my friends and family and the comments have been all very positive. It definitely fits what I do well and I believe other artists.are going to feel the same (if prices ever come down from the stratosphere).

I like it so much that I was willing to drop a boatload of money on dusty.art. Ok, so it might have shown I was definitely not in my right mind at the time, but it also showed how much I love the .Art TLD. Not as a domainer, of course, as I agree that the market for .ART resale is not there, at least for right now... but definitely as an end user!

And I do understand that I'm just a hobby domainer, earning a bit of xtra cash once in a blue moon (800.00 for internetclipart.com in Febuary was a big help) so I'm coming at this .ART name from a different perspective. I'm also a Hobby Artist, but collecting driftwood and making art from it, is my passion. That's what makes the difference in opinions here. I'm a very visual person...and Dustie.Art is a lovely visual name in my book!

Thanks E-Thunder for loving my name. Don't get me wrong, I love it too... but for my art identity, I love Dustie.Art. For my personal Identity, I love Dustie.com. They aren't mutually exclusive of each other and will play well together. I will see to it that they do.

My final piece of advice would be to get some business cards printed. So that you don't have to go thru the "ie" explanation in person. They are a small expense (unlike buying Dusty.Art) and would probably solve more than 50% of the time you encounter this problem. No problem to have both emails on the same card, if you wish. It might even promote your art site.

Thanks Stubs. There's no doubt Luck has been on my side during all of this (except for when I bought a 3.00 scratch off ticket at Caseys the other day ;-( And yes, I was lucky back in 2007 when I joined NamePros too. It made it easy to know where to go to post a rant and a warning after more then a week of stewing about my name being bought for less then 5% of what originally listed it for. And again lucky in here when, for some reason, my credit card didn't go through when I was trying to buy dusty.art at 1600.00! Someone was surely watching out for me through all this, no doubt!
